Locked On Canadiens - Daily Podcast on the Montreal Canadiens

Inside today's Locked on Canadiens

The Montreal Canadiens finally snapped their losing ways with a 4-3 win over the New York Islanders in Patrick Roy's return to Montreal as Islanders coach. A hot power play saw goals from both Nick Suzuki and Sean Monahan, plus an incredible effort from Cole Caufield give the Habs a 3-0 lead. It looked like Montreal was set to easily snap their losing streak before a match penalty for Brendan Gallagher turned things on its head. While the Islanders battled back to tie the game, a late goal from Sean Monahan and some incredible work from Samuel Montembeault salvaged a regulation win for the Habs.

The hosts however are extremely upset with Brendan Gallagher, whose hit to the head of Adam Pelech forced his team to kill a five-minute power play off. It resulted in the Islanders tying the game, and forced Samuel Montembeault to be near-superhuman to end the game. Scott and Laura debate how long they think Gallagher should be suspended for, and how long they think the Department of Player Safety will actually suspend him for this weekend.

Finally, it is the 1000th episode of Locked on Canadiens!

Both hosts muse on their time behind the microphone as they recap their time on this show, and take some listener questions about the journey to this point!

Inside today's Locked on Canadiens:

After a dreadful effort against the Ottawa Senators the Montreal Canadiens needed a bounceback and in their way was the Boston Bruins on Saturday night. Through two periods the Habs were going blow for blow with one of the best teams in the NHL, and then the wheels fell off in a big way as they lost 9-4. With a Senators rematch looming on Tuesday and Patrick Roy arriving on Long Island, how can the Canadiens get right in a crucial week?

Then, it's Three Up, Three Down!

On the falling list is unsurprisingly the Habs defence which hasn't helped the goaltenders in the recent run of defeats and will need to shape up quickly before the season starts spiraling. Related to that, Scott has some questions of Martin St. Louis and his handling of the Habs loss to the Bruins. Finally on the down list, the Senators organization and how they behaved in a heated series over the weekend against the Laval Rocket, including one of the players choosing to attack a goalie.

On the flipside, Scott has plenty of praise for members of the Rocket team, as unexpected names and two hot goaltenders helped to extend a point streak to nine straight games in the AHL. Also rising and rising fast with the Trade Deadline right around the corner is Sean Monahan, who posted three assists in the loss to the Bruins and is turning himself into a highly coveted option for playoff teams. Then, there's the red-hot form of Cole Caufield, which is great news for the Habs as it would appear their top winger is rounding back into his peak goalscoring form.

Inside today's Locked on Canadiens

Fresh off a massive win over the Devils, the Montreal Canadiens looked to continue their winning ways in Ottawa against the Senators. They did not do that, in fact the Canadiens never really showed up against their divisional rival in a game so bad it made Scott begin recording before the start of the third period. While Cole Caufield kept his scoring streak alive, and Michael Pezzetta threw down in a wicked fight, the rest of the team was AWOL and it showed in a 6-2 loss. Scott has the full recap and plenty of thoughts.

After another frustrating week of NHL broadcasts, both in terms of physical quality and the on-air content itself, Scott wants to know why the NHL refuses to ever do better by its fans. Between issues with streams crashing for no reason, regular issues with stream quality, and then the league also removing games from their archives after just 30 days. So the question now becomes, why can't this service be better?

Then to round out the show, Scott dives into some listener questions in the Friday Mailbag!

Inside today's Locked on Canadiens

The Habs won on Wednesday night in Newark over the New Jersey Devils 3-2 on the back of another strong Samuel Montembeault start and some timely goalscoring from their top line. Juraj Slafkovsky stayed red-hot as he opened the scoring off an electric assist from Cole Caufield, while Joshua Roy used his smarts to bury his first NHL goal as well. Despite the penalty kill slowing the team down, a late goal from Cole Caufield made the difference as Montreal secured two points in regulation.

Can this Habs team make it three straight wins when they roll up to Ottawa on Thursday night? Scott examines the insanity that is a rivalry game, and why you can throw all logic out the window whenever these two teams play. He also makes an attempt to break down where the Senators struggles are this year, and why this is a winnable game, even for the Canadiens playing a back to back schedule.

Finally, to end the show...Scott admits he was wrong about a few things, so enjoy his humble penance for being possibly too mean to Joel Armia.

Inside today's Locked on Canadiens

The Montreal Canadiens, fresh off a big win over the Colorado Avalanche, can the Habs find another win against the New Jersey Devils on Wednesday night? The Devils may be without some of their top stars, and have had goaltending struggles of their own this year. With Samuel Montembeault in net, can the Habs replicate what they did to the Avs and start a winning streak of their own, or will the falter against one of the best power plays in the league?

Then, it's trade rumour time!

Starting off big, is there any actual substance to the Trevor Zegras rumours, let alone the ones possibly connecting him to the Montreal Canadiens? Scott examines the fit for him in Montreal, plus the potential package it might require to get the deal done. With it likely to cost several picks and a mix of prospects is it worthwhile for the Habs to delve into their trove of assets in an effort to speed the deal along?

Scott also takes a crack at analyzing the goaltending market with new names appearing available and what that might mean for the Habs, even after Kent Hughes' press conference on Monday afternoon. With the playoff picture slowly taking shape, and several potential contenders struggling to find consistent goaltending, the clock might slowly be ticking towards a conclusion if the Habs play their cards right.

Inside today's Locked on Canadiens

After a disappointing week in the results column for the Montreal Canadiens managed to go toe to toe with the Colorado Avalanche and came out on top with a 4-3 win, more importantly it was a regulation win. Juraj Slafkovsky and Cole Caufield each had a power play while Joel Armia scored a late game-winner all backstopped by a great showing from Jake Allen between the pipes. So Scott takes a moment to break down the win, and why the Montreal Canadiens are one of the most baffling teams in the league this year.

Kent Hughes had his mid-season press conference as well on Monday, and there wasn't a ton of explosive news, but plenty worth digging in to. Hughes talked about possibly extending Sean Monahan, Cole Caufield's season and the development happening in the AHL this year. Scott sifts through the quotes to try and get a read on what the Canadiens GM is possibly thinking as the NHL Trade Deadline slowly draws closer.

Finally, some good injury news! Tanner Pearson was spotted skating with the development staff before the Habs optional skate this morning. The timeline for his return appears to be on track for the initial six week prognosis, and now creates some potential roster havoc in the coming days. Besides Joshua Roy returning to the AHL, what can the Habs do next with Josh Anderson also lingering on the injured list temporarily?

Inside today's Locked on Canadiens

Another great showing from Samuel Montembeault on Saturday night led to only a single point for the Habs as the Edmonton Oilers snagged an overtime win at the Bell Centre. Despite a strong showing on the defensive side of the puck, the Habs managed just one goal off the stick of Cole Caufield on the power play. The game is most notable though for the NHL debut of top prospect Joshua Roy, who was recalled from the AHL on Friday night. With Josh Anderson hurt, Roy appears here to stay for a bit, and should feature heavily on Monday against Colorado.

Then, as we always do on Monday...It's Three Up, Three Down!

In the down section, Josh Anderson makes a return after struggling to make an impact in games where the Montreal Canadiens absolutely needed him to, before eventually landing on the injured list once more. Scott also takes a moment to discuss some of the further fall-out and behavior around the Cutter Gauthier trade, and why the response seems to further justify his decision to ask for a trade.

There's also a rare FOUR UP week, because there's so much good to cover in Montreal, despite the recent losses.

First up is the Laval Rocket, and namely their AHL All-Star in Logan Mailloux. It was mentioned earlier in the week, but Scott wants to go over his progression from the start of the season and how he's on exactly the path you want to see in a league for development. He's been helped out a lot by the emergence of the veterans on the team like Philippe Maillet, Lias Andersson and even fellow prospects like William Trudeau. Scott breaks down his best from the Rocket in the last week.

The prospects are in focus in a big way for the Habs fandom this week, as Owen Beck's trade to Saginaw seems to have re-invigorated his game to the tune of nine points in three games for the Spirit. What has brought his game back in such a big way, well playing on a super team helps, but Beck himself also deserves a ton of praise.

Finally, some praise for some unsung heroes on the Montreal Canadiens as a whole, in particular Samuel Montembeault and Jake Evans who were handling the hardest work against the Edmonton Oilers and coming out looking about as good as someone could in a loss.
