With NHL free agency beginning to slow down a bit, more stories are starting to trickle out about the Montreal Canadiens deals that never came to pass. The biggest one for the Montreal Canadiens is that multiple Habs players in the room asked Kent Hughes to try and make the signing of Ryan O'Reilly happen on July 1st. For Hughes, he was not able to maneuver the cap around enough to make that a reality. So, what would this team have looked like with the veteran centre in the lineup on opening night?

David Reinbacher has signed his ELC. What does that mean for the prospect defenseman going forward?

Finally, would Filip Zadina be a good idea for the Habs, and why has nobody picked him up?

Inside today's Locked on Canadiens

The Canadiens prospects had their final day of development camp on Tuesday morning and to the surprise of no one two defenders stole the show. Both Lane Hutson and David Reinbacher were all over the ice in Brossard and their chemistry were instantly undeniable as they dominated the scrimmage to end camp. The hosts discuss Reinbacher calling Hutson the next Cale Makar, and how Reinbacher has already staked a claim in the prospect rankings.

The Canadiens also opted to add another goalie, this time Zachary Emond who spent part of last year with the Devils minor league teams last year. With Emond, plus Jakub Dobes, Strauss Mann and a few others, what is the Habs plan for goaltending in this upcoming season?

Finally, the hosts tackle some listener questions! Where would Juraj Slafkovsky go in the 2023 NHL Draft? Would the Habs still take Reinbacher at 1st overall in last year's draft?

Inside today's Locked on Canadiens

The Montreal Canadiens started their first day of Free Agency with a huge move, shipping defenseman Joel Edmundson to the Washington Capitals for a pair of 2024 Draft picks. Scott breaks down the return, and why injuries and a flat cap may have lessened the return for the veteran defender. Also, what does this mean for the prospects on the Habs and Rocket rosters right now?

Scott then takes a look at the Habs who have found new homes with new teams, and some of the other moves around the league on a wild July 1st. Also, who have the Canadiens added so far, and where do they fit into the depth chart?

Finally, it's time for the Montreal Canadiens Development Camp in Brossard! Who are the names Scott is paying the most attention to, and which invites might make the most noise in the next three days? Your host breaks all the prospect news down!

Inside today's Locked on Canadiens

Scott and Laura discuss a truly confusing second day at the NHL Draft for the Montreal Canadiens. The hosts take a look at the good bits from the day, such as goaltender Jacob Fowler and the Habs insistence on cushioning their depth at the position, and the addition of two intriguing overage defenders in the later rounds. They also delve into some of the more head-scratching choices made by the Canadiens on the draft floor, including passing up many much more talented players in favour of off the board selections.

It's also Friday, which means the Friday Mailbag returns with the hosts answering all of your listener questions!

The Montreal Canadiens made their choice at 5th overall, selecting defenceman David Reinbacher from the Swiss league. The immediate reaction was mixed to be kind, with many hoping the team would select Matvei Michkov instead. Scott makes the case for why the Canadiens opted for the Austrian defender, and why he may very well be their cornerstone blue liner in the future. Laura remains less convinced, and has her own thoughts to share.

The duo also debates whether or not the team has played it too safe under Kent Hughes at the NHL Draft. Scott very much does not think so, as he goes over the previous Draft class in 2022 and why that narrative feels unwarranted. Laura also outlines what she would want from the Habs in order to get her back on board with this year's draft week strategy so far.

Finally, the hosts discuss the rest of the first round, and what surprises might be in store for the second day of the NHL Draft.

The Montreal Canadiens have selected defenseman David Reinbacher with the 5th-overall pick in the 2023 NHL Draft. Laura Saba of Locked On Canadiens joins Gil Martin and Hadi Kalakeche to discuss why this pick was a surprise, but not all that surprising, and why the Canadiens may have left some significant upside on the table by drafting a player ranked much lower than 5th on most boards.

Inside today's episode

In the midst of a chaotic day in the NHL, and the day before the NHL Draft the Montreal Canadiens stunned everyone by making a trade for former first round pick Alex Newhook. Paying a seemingly big price of the 31st, and 37th overall picks, in addition to defenceman Gianni Fairbrother, the Habs landed a young forward with room to grow in Montreal. The hosts discuss the trade and whether or not it's worth the price the Canadiens paid.

And now, with two draft picks gone from their back pockets, what are the Montreal Canadiens exactly up to at the NHL Draft? Scott thinks the team is going to be locked into trading down to recoup a pick along the way, meaning the dreams of Matvei Michkov might be at an end.

Finally, the Pierre-Luc Dubois saga is over, with the disgruntled forward leaving Winnipeg for Los Angeles. The hosts look at the trade package that finally saw this long running drama come to an end and why the Canadiens could never match what the Kings offered. Or, would it even have been worthwhile to offer as much as they did while in the midst of a rebuild.
