Locked On Canadiens - Daily Podcast on the Montreal Canadiens

Inside today's Locked on Canadiens

Kent Hughes mentioned wanting to not use Carey Price's LTIR cap space if at all possible in an attempt to get the Canadiens closer to normal salary cap compliance. The hosts discuss what options are in front of the team, and how Hughes can navigate another difficult situation, even if it means trading the remainder of Price's contract.

Speaking of goaltenders, Marc-Antoine Godin reported today that there haven't been any real negotiations between the team and starting goalie Samuel Montembeault. Scott and Laura discuss the potential reasons why there hasn't been any movement, and what it means if Montembeault keeps his resurgent form up heading into the opening weeks of the regular season.

Finally, it's Friday and that means your hosts are ending the show by answering all of your listener questions in the Friday Mailbag!

Inside today's Locked on Canadiens

With the dust settled following a massive three-way deal last week, the Montreal Canadiens and Kent Hughes find themselves in an interesting spot regarding defenseman Jeff Petry. Scott and Laura break down the dilemma that the front office faces heading into the last stretch before training camp in September.

Is there a possibility that the Canadiens might hold on to Petry for at least this year? If so, where does the returning veteran fit into the lineup and could his arrival spell the end of another vet's time in Montreal? On the flipside, trading him seems to the most valuable path forward and allows the Habs to continue cleaning up their cap situation in a big way. With two more spots for retaining salary, would Kent Hughes use one of them in a Jeff Petry trade?

And if the Canadiens are intent on trading Petry, where could he possibly land? Scott and Laura debate the options, and what they might be looking for in a potential trade return, if anything were to be coming back at all.

How does the Habs future look, what are their strengths, what are their weaknesses, and who are the players to watch. Using a piece by listener favourite Tony Ferrari as a springboard, we discuss the future of the Habs prospect pipeline.

Here is Tony's piece (more of his work is linked below):

Inside a special bonus Locked on Canadiens:

The Montreal Canadiens got in on the Erik Karlsson trade with the San Jose Sharks and the Pittsburgh Penguins on Sunday afternoon. Kent Hughes was more than willing to act as a third party and ended up collecting a small fortune for his efforts at the end of the day.

When the dust had settled Montreal had acquired prospect Nathan Legare, a 2025 second round pick from the Penguins, goalie Casey DeSmith, and former Hab Jeff Petry, while they send Mike Hoffman and Rem Pitlick to the Sharks and Penguins respectively. Scott does his best to break down the new names, and old faces joining the Habs, and discusses why the departing names open the biggest window for young players in the rebuild.

The question remains though, is this another huge win for Kent Hughes? While the Penguins landed their White Whale in Erik Karlsson, the Canadiens made out extremely well. Scott makes the case for this being a huge win thanks to freeing up space for young forwards, but also how Hughes can make it an all-time deal if he can clear the logjam on defence next.

Inside today's Locked on Canadiens

The yearly Top 25 Under 25 list at Habs EOTP is once again underway, with the first week of players coming to an end! With some new faces, and some older ones appearing the hosts take a peek at the names and discuss their rankings and the votes for the players. While Scott knows what the next five names are, Laura gives her thoughts on who might be upcoming in the next week of articles.

Scott then poses a question to the listeners and Laura, if we could bring back one former Hab from the last ten years to add to this current team, who would it be? Between Phillip Danault, Artturi Lehkonen and some older names there is plenty of debate, and no really wrong answers to pick from.

Finally, it's Friday and that means the hosts dive into all of your questions in the Friday Mailbag to end the show!

Jesse Ylonen has been re-signed by the Montreal Canadiens and we discuss where he will fit in into the Habs lineup. We field a listener question about the future of the Habs defense - if not Jordan Harris, who could the Canadiens trade in the future. Finally, to answer another listener question, we try to speculate on what the Habs hidden talents could be and who their horror movie counterparts would be.

Inside today's Locked on Canadiens

Scott is back! And the first thing he wants to know is where Filip Mesar is going to be playing professional hockey this upcoming season. Scott and Laura debate the options, including a potential return to Europe due to the crowding of the roster at the NHL and possibly AHL levels. Both seem to agree though, that Mesar in a Laval Rocket sweater is the best path forward so the 2022 first round pick has total access to the might of the Canadiens player development system.

Speaking of the future, a listener had a deep question about what the roster might look like in three years time. With just five current players still under contract going into that season, the Habs roster will look much different as they graduate prospects and also move on from others. Which players will step up into bigger roles, and who will be wearing a new uniform as the team hopefully pushes for a deep playoff run at that point?

To wrap the show, the hosts discuss the burning question of the summer...Which Habs players are going to see Barbie, and which ones are going to see Oppenheimer?
