Locked On Canadiens - Daily Podcast on the Montreal Canadiens

Inside today's Locked on Canadiens

It is the unofficial start of the Canadiens preseason with the Montreal Canadiens charity golf tournament teeing off on Monday! The hosts take a look at the quotes, and announcements from the tournament, including a huge honour bestowed on Mike Matheson heading into his second full season with the team!

Speaking of players wearing a letter for the Canadiens this year, former goalie coach Stephane Waite had some disrespect to direct at captain Nick Suzuki. Should Brendan Gallagher have been named captain, or did the Canadiens make the right choice going forward with Suzuki wearing the "C"?

Finally, Carey Price gave a heartbreaking update on his knee injury and recovery. Scott and Laura discuss his quotes from earlier this week, and what it means for Carey Price's legacy in hockey's most famous market.

The Montreal Canadiens finally released their roster for their upcoming rookie camp, and the Rookie Showcase in Buffalo New York. The hosts dive into the roster, including a surprising name from the NCAA, which intrigues Scott greatly. What can the fans expect from this group in Buffalo, and who should everyone have their eyes on starting next Friday?

A listener asked the hosts a deep question as well, if we could alter any of the picks the Montreal Canadiens have made in the last five NHL Drafts, which ones would we change, and which ones would we keep? From the Michkov and Reinbacher debate, all the way back to the later rounds in 2019, how would the hosts change what has been a relatively strong stretch of drafting by the Habs?

On today's Montreal Canadiens mailbag episode, we discuss the Habs rebuild timeline and whether it should be an ongoing build rather than a one-time rebuild. We also wonder if Joel Armia will ever get his game back and who the Habs need to give up in order to get rid of his contract. We discuss Florian Xhekaj and his potential, and try to decide which player would have been stranded at Burning Man this year. Finally, we have a special "guest" segment in that we borrow the Habs portion of the prospect pool rankings prepared by Hadi Kalakeche and Sebastian High of Locked On NHL Prospects.

Upcoming episode content mentioned around 1:30, mailbag starts around 3:20, prospect segment starts around 20 minutes into the episode.

On today's episode, we start by talking about what we learned about the Montreal Canadiens from this year's 'behind the scenes' video regarding the NHL Draft. We then compare this year's to last year's in terms of what we learned. In our last segment, we discuss the highlights of this year's edition of the Eyes on the Prize annual Top 25 Under 25 series and talk a little bit about the process, the surprises, and the difference of opinion amongst the community.

Inside today's Locked on Canadiens

Scott is running solo as he looks at what we should expect heading into the first semi-meaningful hockey of the year, the Rookie Showcase in Buffalo NY!

While Juraj Slafkovsky won't be there to grab all the attention like last year, there are still plenty of talented top prospects expected to take the ice at the Harbor Center. David Reinbacher has been loaned back to the Habs from his team in Switzerland, and Scott debates how long he should stay in North America this preseason.

Who of the big names won't be at the showcase? Scott takes a look at some of the likely missing names from the potential roster and why they won't be in Buffalo. Also, who from the likely returning players is going to step up in a big way? Owen Beck and Joshua Roy will have all eyes on them, but another OHL prospect is grabbing Scott's attention as well.

Finally, the wild card prospects, who is going to be this year's Arber Xhekaj like attention grabber? Will his brother Florian fill that role, or is someone unexpected going to step in and steal that spotlight?

Inside today's Locked on Canadiens

The Montreal Canadiens are again releasing their behind the scenes video from the lead up to the NHL Draft, and the eventual selection of David Reinbacher at fifth overall. The hosts discuss what parts of the process they're hoping to see in order to get a full understanding behind what was a confusing 2023 NHL Draft for the Canadiens.

Also announced on Tuesday was the creation of the PWHL, the latest professional women's hockey league in North America. Following the closure of the CWHL, and the PHF also shuttering operations to make this league a reality, the hosts debate the early news surrounding the PWHL. There is of course a team in Montreal, very likely to be loaded with stars like Marie-Philip Poulin, will the Canadiens find themselves getting involved in some way?

Finally, former head coach Dom Ducharme sat down with TVA Sports for an interview, and the topic of Cole Caufield came up. The former coach defended his time with the team, saying he never slowed down the young winger, and that it was a coincidence of bad luck at the time. Both hosts have plenty to say on the interview, and on Ducharme's disastrous final days on the bench.

Inside today's Locked on Canadiens

With the arrival of Gustav Lindstrom, and the term remaining on a few older contracts, what exactly is the Canadiens plan on defence this year? Scott wonders who claims the last two spots, and if Lindstrom or even Chris Wideman are headed to the AHL's Laval Rocket. That is of course, if there is a bad decision to be made at all this year.

Then, while the mood around the Canadiens has been far more positive over the course of the rebuild, the hosts take a moment to discuss some of the harsh realities still possibly facing this Habs team. There will still be losses, and there is still more rebuilding to be had, but besides the obvious what other tough lessons should fans be on the lookout for this year?

Finally, the host tackle a few leftover mailbag questions from last Friday!

This week's Montreal Canadiens mailbag is full of questions about hypotheticals. First, we discuss whether the Habs should be involved in a Connor Hellebuyck trade, whether as the recipient or as a facilitator. We also discuss whether the Canadiens should sign a veteran to a PTO this fall, William Nylander rumours, and more.

Reports have surfaced that Montreal Canadiens prospect Logan Mailloux will not be prevented from playing in the NHL should he make the team in the future. We talk about what this means for the player both on and off the ice. We then talk about what teams would be looking for a player like Jake Allen and whether the Habs could trade him. Finally, we have some mailbag questions from last week, including whether Gustav Lindstrom coming to Montreal pushes Justin Barron down the depth chart.
