Locked On Canadiens - Daily Podcast on the Montreal Canadiens

On today's Montreal Canadiens mailbag episode, we start the episode answering a couple of mailbag questions about the possibility of targeting Anaheim Ducks star forward Trevor Zegras, either with a trade or with an offer sheet. Turning our attention to Habs defensemen, we talk about whether the Habs should consider playing Lane Hutson or Logan Mailloux at forward and whether David Reinbacher will remain with the Habs to start the season. We also discuss Paul Byron's potential tribute from the Habs, and his true greatest moment. All that and more are in this week's Habs mailbag.

Inside today's Locked on Canadiens

As expected a game between the Habs and Sens got wildly ridiculous in all the wrong ways on Wednesday. Montreal came away with a 4-3 victory, but it wasn't without ugly hits, bad officiating, and general nonsense. Scott breaks down the games key moments, and what went right for the Habs to win their first preseason game in three years!

Following the recap, Scott takes a look at the brightest performers on the night, including another standout showing from prospects Jared Davidson, and William Trudeau. While Davidson remains on an AHL deal, could he be upgraded to a full ELC by the end of this preseason or will he follow the same route as previous overage players in Montreal? Scott also looks at whether or not Trudeau has done enough to possibly steal himself an NHL spot just two games into the preseason.

Also, through two games so far, what are the biggest concerns facing the Habs right now? Scott has worries about some of the veteran NHL defenders, and also with the early goaltending signs. How can Montreal turn it around over the next four games before opening night begins?

Inside today's Locked on Canadiens:

The next chapter in the Habs and Sens rivalry kicks off on Wednesday night when the two teams meet for the first time this preseason. Ottawa has gotten off to a quick start against Toronto in their own preseason run while the Canadiens struggled against New Jersey on Monday night. Scott and Laura break down the game preview, and what sort of fireworks we can expect on Wednesday.

With the lineups still a mystery for that game against Ottawa, the hosts are curious about who gets the call to play with Nick Suzuki and Cole Caufield on Wednesday. Rafaël Harvey-Pinard had an impressive showing in the role last year, and could very well get a shot there. However, with so many bodies in camp, could we see the Habs try out a prospect or two in that role? Or will someone from Monday's game get a second game in a row to prove themselves?

Finally, the hosts sit down to discuss the state of the Atlantic Division, whether or not there is any path for the Montreal Canadiens to get out of the basement over the Senators this season.

The Montreal Canadiens lost to the New Jersey Devils in their first preseason game, but there were some noteworthy moments for some Habs prospects. We get into game notes at around the 3-minute mark. At the 11-minute mark, it's Josh Wawa SZN. We discuss Joshua Roy's progress and potential. Finally, at around the 20-minute mark, we discuss Habs goaltending, and specifically the upside for Jake Dobes.

Inside today's Locked on Canadiens

Scott and Laura dive into the first Three Up, Three Down of the new season!

Are there concerns about the slower start for Juraj Slafkovsky in camp so far? Scott isn't worried yet, and is already tired of the panic narrative around the first overall pick. Also of concern is goaltending, at least outside of the top two options, is the goaltending battle already over before the first games have even happened?

On the other side of things, the expected top prospects are showing their shine with Owen Beck and Joshua Roy making their presence felt from the first scrimmage on. Also unsurprisingly is that Mike Matheson is leading all defenders in camp, what can we expect from a hopefully full season from the new alternate captain?

Also, hockey is finally back on Monday night! The hosts break down their expectations for their opening preseason contest against the New Jersey Devils. How many opening night players will be in the lineup? Who starts in net? Can we get Joshua Roy on the top line?

Inside today's Locked on Canadiens episode

The Montreal Canadiens prospects finished up their time at the NHL Prospects Challenge in Buffalo with a 2-1 win over the Ottawa Senators. Despite a close score it was a game the Habs prospects dominated all over the ice, and Scott breaks down their win and has some overall thoughts on how this was a hugely successful showing for the team in Buffalo.

The Habs also went with a strong lineup against Ottawa, including many of their top prospects who didn't play on Saturday. Scott breaks down the play of Logan Mailloux, Jayden Struble and William Trudeau, all who stood out in great ways again. He also takes a look at Florian Xhekaj continuing the trend of Xhekajs annoying the Senators in this tournament.

Finally, who were the biggest standouts for the Canadiens this past week? How did David Reinbacher fare in his first action as a Hab? Scott has the full wrap up to end the show!

Inside today's episode of Locked on Canadiens

The Montreal Canadiens prospects have played two games in the 2023 Prospects Showcase in Buffalo, losing to the Sabres and beating the Bruins over the weekend. The hosts break down the overall vibes after both games, and how the Canadiens have adjusted on the fly between both of them. Scott also gives a brief preview of what to expect for Monday's clash with the Ottawa Senators.

Through two games, what are the hosts initial impressions on 2023 first round pick David Reinbacher? While not flashy, Reinbacher showcased a lot of polish to his game already. He's not the only highly regarded prospect who has showed his skill this weekend, with both Owen Beck and Joshua Roy grabbing plenty of attention on their own.

Who else has stood out for the Canadiens through two games? Which prospects are making a claim to have a long look with the Laval Rocket? Who needs to show a bit more on Monday? The hosts break it all down to end the show!
