Locked On Canadiens - Daily Podcast on the Montreal Canadiens

Inside today's Locked on Canadiens

The Toronto Maple Leafs finally slayed their first round demons, defeating the Tampa Bay Lightning in six games to snap a 19-year drought of ineptitude. The hosts take a moment to give their thoughts on the Habs' forever rival finally overcoming the first round, and whether or not either of them are happy about it.

Then, it's on to the reviews once again! First up is Christian Dvorak, the centre who seems to not really fit any sort of mold in Montreal and has struggled to establish himself fully since joining the team. Many fans seem to believe that Dvorak doesn't fit the longer term plans of the team, is there a spot for the veteran, or is Dvorak destined to be a trade piece this off-season?

To wrap things up, it's on to Joel Edmundson!

The veteran defender was a huge part of the Canadiens run to the Stanley Cup Final, and since then has battled form issues and injuries. Cited as one of the biggest trade chips at Kent Hughes' disposal, is the physical defender going to suit up for the Habs this year, or will he be traded by the NHL Draft? If he returns, how can Martin St-Louis bring the best out of Edmundson?

The Montreal Canadiens player reviews continue for the show and the hosts are taking a peek at two of the most criticized players in the organization, and one of the newest members of the club as well!

Right off the bat, the hosts take a look at David Savard, who again was asked to play far above his expected level for most of the season and had his fair share of struggles once again. With two years left on his contract is there as way for Kent Hughes to make Savard a viable trade asset, or for Martin St-Louis to find the proper role for him again?

Then, it's onto arguably the most divisive player on the Canadiens this year, Jonathan Drouin. Again it was a tough year for Drouin as he finished his contract with the team and made it clear he had loved his time with the club. However, despite a strong playmaking showing in the second half of the season, Drouin struggled mightily to light the lamp himself. Is there a world where Drouin is back with the Canadiens next year, or is he going to seek a continued career redemption elsewhere?

Finally, the arrival of Kirby Dach on Draft Day last year was stunning to everyone, and came with some trepidation in the Habs fanbase. Dach went far and above to prove those fears were unfounded as he put together a strong, albeit injury-filled first year with the Canadiens. As a top line winger with Nick Suzuki he thrived, as a centre he showcased tremendous growth as a young player under Martin St-Louis, so just where is his best long term fit in Montreal?

Our Montreal Canadiens player review series continues with rookie defenseman Kaiden Guhle, veteran defenseman Chris Wideman, and sophomore forward Michael Pezzetta. Guhle was a bright spot in an abysmal Habs season during all the games he was able to play until his injury. Chris Wideman unfortunately did not endear himself as he previously had to the fanbase or the coaching staff. Michael Pezzetta struggled in the early going, even becoming a healthy scratch for a stretch of time, but was able to find his game and what makes him truly great by the end of the year. We discuss these players and award them their season grades.

Inside today's Locked on Canadiens

An insanely entertaining first round of the playoffs is still underway, but with so many storylines and narratives already forming the hosts try their best to fit it all into the opening segment. Are the Leafs going to finally win a round after stealing game against Tampa? Are the Oilers about to be upset victims despite being tied in their series? What series has surprised the hosts the most?

Then, it's onto player reviews for this past year!

Starting things off, the duo take a look at the unfortunately injury shortened season of Josh Anderson. The physical, speedy winger topped 20 goals for the first time in a Canadiens uniform, and was closing in on his career best before an injury ended his season early. While wearing an 'A' on his sweater for most of the season Anderson seemed to have found some consistency that was lacking in previous years, even while surrounded by trade rumours. Does a strong offensive showing earn Anderson a high grade?

To wrap things up, the hosts turn their attention to the newest fan favourite player in rookie Arber Xhekaj! While Xhekaj struck fear into the hearts of opponents with his fists and punishing physical game, he showed surprising offensive upside this season. With the defensive group continuing to get crowded, how can Xhekaj establish himself further and keep himself as one of the regulars next season?

We begin our Montreal Canadiens player reviews with the goaltenders: Jake Allen and Samuel Montembeault. We first discuss the Laval Rocket and the end of their season after a loss to the Utica Comets in the AHL playoffs, and whether Cayden Primeau will start the season in Montreal. We then talk about Jake Allen, the season he's had, and whether the Habs will say goodbye to him in the upcoming offseason. Finally, we discuss Samuel Montembeault, who has emerged as a decent option in goal after taking huge strides forward personally this season.

The Montreal Canadiens are done for the season, but the Laval Rocket aren't, and neither are the NHL playoffs. Scott and Laura kick things off by taking a look at the upcoming three-game series for the Laval Rocket as they qualified for the Calder Cup playoffs in their final games of the season. What can we expect from the Rocket's biggest players, and can we expect any of the top prospects to be joining soon?

Then, for the final two segments it's time for the Locked on Canadiens NHL Playoff preview!

Starting out west, who are the hosts cheering for? Will Seattle continue to surprise teams this year, or will the Avs continue a march towards a second Stanley Cup? Can the Oilers take advantage of one of the best modern NHL scoring performances, or will old friend Phillip Danault be able to shut down Connor McDavid?

Out east, will the feisty Panthers slow down the dominant Bruins, and who exactly should Habs fans be cheering for in that series? Is the Rangers/Devils going to be the most chaotic in this entire Stanley Cup playoff? Oh, and don't worry Leafs fans, Scott and Laura have plenty of thoughts about your first round series too.
