Locked On Canadiens - Daily Podcast on the Montreal Canadiens

Inside today's Locked on Canadiens

Patrik Bexell rejoins the show to preview some of the biggest names from Europe in the upcoming NHL Draft who could fall into the lap of the Montreal Canadiens.

Who is Leo Carlsson, and why is he so much more than a consolation prize for a team who missed out on Conor Bedard or Adam Fantilli? Patrik breaks down the centre's performance with Orebro in the SHL, in addition to a strong showing in all U20 tournaments for Sweden.

Keeping with Swedish players, one of the names lingering around the Canadiens second first round pick in the 2023 NHL Draft is that of Axel Sandin Pellikka, a defenceman from the SHL. There has been a lot of back and forth over his defensive upside, and whether it outweighs his offensive upside going forward. Patrik cuts through the fat to give you the answers, right from the coaches mouths.

Inside today's Locked on Canadiens

It was the final Habs/Panthers showdown of the season, and again it was a bit of a ridiculous affair. However, despite the outcome the game featured the biggest possible moment it could have had. Sean Farrell scored his first NHL goal, and that makes it all worthwhile.

While this year is all but written off, it's never too early to look towards next years and the potential Canadiens lineup. With Rafaël Harvey-Pinard putting up incredible numbers so far this year, is he a lock to play in the top six next year? Scott looks at some of his numbers while playing alongside Nick Suzuki, and what his next contract might look like in the summer.

Prior to the game there was a sound byte from Nick Kypreos making the rounds, mentioning that Jeff Gorton may be looking to leave the Montreal organization. Scott takes a crack at explaining why this scenario is entirely unlikely, and in the chance that Gorton does leave, who would replace him?

Inside today's Locked on Canadiens

It was a wild and crazy night in Buffalo as the Canadiens dealt a huge blow to the Sabres prospective playoff hopes. In a back and forth contest it was the Canadiens grabbing two points in a shootout victory that included a winning goal from Michael Pezzetta. Scott and Laura recap what ended up being a well-deserved win for the Habs, and why building good foundations helps lessen the sting of falling slowly out of the Bedard sweepstakes.

Rumours again persist about the Montreal Canadiens and Winnipeg Jets centre Pierre-Luc Dubois. With Elliotte Friedman saying there's a near 95% chance he ends up in Montreal this summer, the hosts take a look at where he would fit in the vision of Kent Hughes' rebuild, and who moves to the wing if Dubois were to arrive in Montreal.

Finally, there are even more prospect rumours swirling around the Habs this week. With Ohio State eliminated from the Frozen Four over the weekend, there are some rumblings that sophomore goalie Jakub Dobeš could be offered a contract with the Canadiens. With Cayden Primeau potentially being called up to meet the team in Philly, could Dobeš be a lifeline for the Rocket's playoff hopes?

Inside today's Locked on Canadiens

The Montreal Canadiens crushed the Columbus Blue Jackets 8-2 on Saturday night. It showed the difference between a truly bad team right now, and a team that is still bad, but hasn't hit rock bottom yet. Led by Nick Suzuki's four points and Rafaël Harvey-Pinard's second period hat trick, the Habs romped in the game, and still maintained their lottery odds. Scott takes a peek at the latest in the race for Bedard and the week ahead for Montreal.

Then, because it's Monday that means it's time for Three Up, Three Down!

Squarely in the crosshairs of every Habs fan right now is the Department of Player Safety, who were called out directly from a grotesquely wounded Mike Hoffman after the Bruins game on Thursday. Also making the down list for the first time in awhile is Jake Allen, who seems to be mired in a tough slump, some of which isn't his fault, but going winless in seven straight starts is a tough feat to accomplish.

The Up list this week however is lengthy, very very lengthy. RHP notched his first NHL hat trick, Nick Suzuki had eight points in three games, while Kirby Dach looked amazing! That's to say nothing of the incredible efforts of Samuel Montembeault, and Mike Matheson who also played incredible well last week. There is plenty of praise to go around outside the NHL as well, and Scott does his best to make sure everyone gets their plaudits.

Inside today's Locked on Canadiens

The Montreal Canadiens and Boston Bruins played what can only be described as a clown shoes game on Thursday night. There were blatant missed calls, gross acts of violence against Mike Hoffman, and at some point hockey was played. Scott has the recap of all the action, the good and the insanely bad.

Then, it on to the prospects and their performances on the first day of the NCAA Frozen Four and in the AHL on Wednesday night. What record has Lane Hutson broken now, and how close is he to setting an all-time mark for his historic season? Is a pro contract in his future this summer or is it time to let him cook a little while longer?

In the AHL, Emil Heineman made an instant impact in his North American debut for the Laval Rocket. Scott breaks down his debut, including his first AHL goal, and where the Rocket stand heading into the final playoff stretch.

Inside today's Locked on Canadiens

The Habs and Bolts played their final game of the season against each other, and it was marked by a pair of returns for the Montreal Canadiens. Both Kirby Dach and Brendan Gallagher were back in the lineup in what ended up being another really exciting clash between the two rivals. Dach made his impact immediately and the Habs seemed to elevate their play to steal a 3-2 victory on Tuesday night. While the team secured a win, they lost heavily regardless.

In the closing seconds of the game Mikhail Sergachev pulled Josh Anderson down from behind as Anderson attempted to score an empty net goal. Anderson then appeared to seriously injure his ankle as he collided with the goal post and the officials saw it fit to call absolutely nothing on the play. So that means it's once again time for a patented Locked on Canadiens rant on player safety and officiating!

The NHL has found their newest jersey maker for the post-Adidas era in the league, and the response has been astoundingly one-sided. With a ten year deal locked in between the NHL and Fanatics there is a wave of concern and trepidation amongst hockey fans with that news. Scott takes a look at why fans are right to be concerned and why this deal could blow up in the face of the league quickly.

Inside today's Locked on Canadiens

The Montreal Canadiens had their annual team photo day and with that came a bit of surprising good news for Habs fans everywhere. Part of the team practice saw the return of Kirby Dach, Brendan Gallagher, and Jake Evans in non-contact jerseys before the team photo. While it is anyone's guess when the trio might return, it's clear that it may not be far off. So what would the lineup look like once all three are cleared to return, and who is headed back to the Rocket? Scott does his best to break it all down.

Speaking of the Rocket, Emil Heineman officially joined the team for practice on Monday and will wear #19 for the rest of this season. Scott takes a peek at where he can slot in for J-F Houle's side and why his arrival is perfectly timed for the Rocket.

Finally, the NCAA Frozen Four tournament kicks off this week and there are plenty of Habs prospects and potential free agent signings kicking around to keep an eye on. While all eyes will be on Lane Hutson and the BU Terriers, there is fellow Hobey Baker Finalist, Sean Farrell to keep an eye on, plus much more. Scott has the matchups and all you'll need to know before the puck drops this week!
