Locked On Canadiens - Daily Podcast on the Montreal Canadiens

Inside today's Locked on Canadiens

It was a great weekend for the Montreal Canadiens increasing their odds for Conor Bedard and the first overall pick! Scott takes a look at the Habs game in Tampa Bay, the good, the bad, and the oversleeping. Even with the Canadiens losing they got strong showings from players like Denis Gurianov, Josh Anderson and Nick Suzuki, while also making the game competitive right down to the final horn. Scott breaks the game down, and takes a look at where Montreal now sits in the lottery odds!

In Three Down, there is plenty to discuss around the Canadiens, but the biggest topic is Jonathan Drouin who was benched for the entire game on Saturday after being late to a team meeting. Was his punishment for a first-time offence too harsh, or was Martin St-Louis correct to stick to his principles? Scott takes a look at the whole situation and tries to find the answer.

Finally in Three Up, it's all about the young guys again this week. Lane Hutson scored two goals to win the Hockey East title for BU, including the game-winner in overtime itself. Rhett Pitlick might have scored the goal of the year in the NCAA in the B1G title game as well. At the NHL level the hard shooting wingers in Denis Gurianov and Jesse Ylönen are also thriving, having scored multiple times over the last week, and that's great news for the Habs. Who else made the cut for the biggest risers in Montreal this past week?

Inside today's Locked on Canadiens:

What

The

Heck

The Montreal Canadiens and Florida Panthers played one of the wildest, sloppiest, and downright insane contests in NHL history on Thursday. Scott does his best to describe a game that could one day have an entire ESPN 30 for 30 about it. Between the goals scored, the horrendous officiating there is so much to talk about that it takes two full segments. Scott breaks down everything from a wild 10 goal first period, to Nick Suzuki being ejected at the end of the contest and more!

Following up after that, the QMJHL has announced strong plans to help curb the occurrence of fighting in hockey, at least within their own league. Scott examines what their plan is, and how it tracks alongside leagues from Europe, and what leagues in North America can do to follow in its footsteps. It also raises the question, is it possible to see and end to fighting in the sport of hockey happen organically?

Inside today's Locked on Canadiens

Scott welcomes long-time friend of the show Patrik Bexell to discuss the big happenings with the Montreal Canadiens prospects playing in Europe!

The duo tackle the curious case of Emil Heineman, the heavy shooting, but still raw winger who may very well be on his way to the Laval Rocket in the near future. Patrik discusses where Heineman has shown growth, and where the young forward has chances to grow to increase his odds of being an NHL player.

The conversation then shifts over to Adam Engström, whose club defeated Heineman's in the SHL playoffs earlier this week. Engström is quickly becoming a fan favourite with a smart offensive game and great skating. What does his timeline look like in regards to a North American debut, and can Engström avoid some of the same issues that have plagued Mattias Norlinder?

Finally the duo discuss a handful of other prospects playing in Europe including Oliver Kapanen, Frederik Dichow and the newly acquired Tony Sund to wrap up the show!

Inside today's Locked on Canadiens:

The Habs played a pair of high-scoring, defence and goaltending optional games to kick off their week against the Colorado Avalanche and the Pittsburgh Penguins. Scott recaps two games that were wild for all the right and all the wrong reasons. Which players stood out and which ones looked like they were ready for the season to be over? Scott has that and more!

To avoid being overly negative to start the week, Scott also takes a look at the current Draft Lottery picture. With the Canadiens on a brutal run of form, they've increased their odds at landing Conor Bedard. However, there's a tight race to the bottom, but the Canadiens might have an advantage over their closest competition, Scott breaks it all down!

Rumours are swirling about prospects Emil Heineman and Jayden Struble, Scott takes a peek at the latest news. Will the two prospects be joining the North American pro ranks soon, and what can we expect from them? Scott also checks in on the upcoming Laval Rocket games as they push for a playoff berth and deal with an injury crisis of their own.

Inside today's Locked on Canadiens

The Canadiens lost another close game, this time to the New Jersey Devils on Saturday night with Denis Gurianov hitting the scoresheet. Scott has your recap of the game and an update on where the Canadiens sit in the chase for Conor Bedard. He also looks at the pair of games in an upcoming back to back games against Colorado and Pittsburgh, and how it's likely to stress the Habs in a way they haven't been in several weeks.

Then, it's time for Three Up, Three Down!

In the down section it's been a tougher week or so than expected for Denis Gurianov, who despite scoring against the Devils has been struggling to find his form for the Habs. It's also been a quiet score week for Nick Suzuki, who is being tasked to do so much for Martin St-Louis, can he have some pressure taken off his shoulders soon?

On the flipside of things, there may very well be defensive reinforcements coming from the NCAA. While Sean Farrell played a huge role in getting Harvard closer to a Frozen Four birth, Northeastern and Jayden Struble now find themselves staring at the end of their season. Will Struble be joining the Canadiens soon, or will this be a summer decision?

Also on the up list, Alex Belzile and Chris Tierney continue to play and produce way above their expected level, who else in Montreal is keeping the Habs competitive despite the six-game losing streak?

Inside today's Locked on Canadiens

The Montreal Canadiens and Carolina Hurricanes squared off in what ended up being an incredibly entertaining affair on Tuesday night. While the Habs came up just short in the shootout there was plenty of fun things to talk about at the end of the night. While Jesperi Kotkaniemi delivered the dagger to the Habs, the home team still put together a fantastic effort thanks to an all AHL fourth line and Mike Matheson doing everything possible to secure a win. Scott has your recap and all the details

With the game against the Carolina Hurricanes behind them, it's time to take a look at where the Canadiens stand in terms of the NHL Draft Lottery! The Habs have gotten a huge boost in their quest for Conor Bedard thanks to the Blackhawks and Canucks this week, but still sit just outside the bottom five. With their current spot locked in, what would the Habs current draft look like at this exact moment? Scott breaks it all down.

In the final segment, it's a big few weeks for prospects as their regular seasons wind down, and many of them prepare for the start of their post-season. With the Habs loaded to the top with prospects, Scott takes a peek at who is the closest and most likely to be making the jump to the professional ranks with the Canadiens or Laval Rocket in the near future!

The Montreal Canadiens were very quiet at the NHL trade deadline, but the rebuild continues to plug along. We have a belated mailbag episode today in which we discuss next steps - we have lots of questions about the draft and offseason moves the Habs could make. Should they package picks in order to get out of the Brendan Gallagher contract? Do we see them picking Matvei Michkov even though they have indicated that is not a direction they want to go in? And more.

Inside today's Locked on Canadiens

The Habs had a pair of games on Friday and on Sunday night as they completed their west coast trip. To put things lightly, it was a great weekend for fans of Conor Bedard and the Draft Lottery. Scott has your recaps, highlights and more!

Then it's time for Three Up, Three Down!

There is only one big down this week, and that ties in to the Canadiens medical staff. Scott has plenty of thoughts about how this season has gone, and especially how it's gone wrong for the Habs. With Kaiden Guhle being the latest player to play injured in a lost season, how much more can be allowed?

In the up segment there's plenty of good wrapped up in a three game losing streak! Riley Kidney and Lane Hutson remain insanely good as they wrap up their regular seasons respectively. Also, Denis Gurianov has provided a lot of fun value since his arrival, and the Laval Rocket have plenty of names worth tuning in for as they push for the playoffs!

So, who has made the Up list this week?
