Locked On Canadiens - Daily Podcast on the Montreal Canadiens

The Montreal Canadiens beat the Winnipeg Jets in convincing fashion, and we take the time to praise the key players in the game. Samuel Montembeault has quietly been putting up impressive numbers. Justin Barron turned out the kind of performance we have been waiting for from him since he was traded to Montreal. Evgenii Dadonov and Mike Hoffman scored goals and dragged themselves out of Habs fans' collective doghouse. Kirby Dach was impressive despite being separated from Nick Suzuki and Cole Caufield. And Arber Xhekaj remains a source of joy for Canadiens fans everywhere.

Inside today's Locked on Canadiens:

Montreal takes on the Winnipeg Jets on Tuesday night at the Bell Centre, and since their playoff sweep two years ago the Habs have struggled to find the upper hand against the Jets. Scott and Laura preview the game, and discuss whether Samuel Montembeault can steal a win, or if there is a chance for the Canadiens to take advantage of a few Winnipeg weaknesses as well.

The Habs may have to enter the game on Tuesday minus two of their regular forwards as well, with both Jake Evans and Juraj Slafkovsky leaving games early over the weekend. With Jesse Ylönen already on recall, what other call-up options do the Canadiens have? Or, if the injuries are of a long-term type, could there be a big trade in the near future for Kent Hughes to get some support in for Martin St-Louis?

Finally, Alex Nedeljkovic cleared waivers on Monday for the Detroit Red Wings, and many Canadiens fans thought he might be a good waiver claim option. Now that the young goalie has cleared and has been assigned to the AHL, his value might have increased more for the Canadiens. However, it's unclear whether or not the team even needs to add him despite Jake Allen being out. The hosts debate the pros and cons!

The Montreal Canadiens come away with a split from their New York weekend, with a loss against the Islanders and a win against the Rangers. We recap those two games and discuss the importance of showing up from the first moment of the game.

We then move on to our 3 Up and 3 Down. Nick Suzuki gets an honourable mention, while Jacob Trouba gets a dishonourable one. Cole Caufield, Samuel Montembeault, and Jonathan Drouin are also trending upwards.

Inside today's Locked on Canadiens

Scott and Laura dive into their feelings after P.K. Subban returned to Montreal and was honoured by the team before the game, and also talk about the surprise return of Carey Price and the triple low five. The hosts also discuss the season debut of Jesse Ylönen and recap a thrilling win against the Nashville Predators thanks to a pair of Cole Caufield power play goals!

Then, it's time for the Friday Mailbag!

The hosts break down the concept of the emotions around tanking in the NHL and why it's such a complex thing to navigate every game. Speaking of tanking too, with losses piling up how can the Canadiens balance the development of their young stars without crippling their AHL side who is battling an injury issue of their own?

Also, can the Habs win the 1st and 2nd overall picks in the NHL Draft Lottery? Is Erik Portillo a worthwhile trade candidate, how about Ryan Suzuki? With all their assets available can Montreal pry these prospects away from their current teams?

The Montreal Canadiens defensive prospect depth is a major topic of discussion amongst the fanbase at the moment, so we get together with Sebastian High, Director of North American Scouting for Dobber Prospects to discuss. We also discuss some players that are eligible for the upcoming NHL draft that made names for themselves in the most recent recent IIHF World Junior Hockey Hockey Championship. Finally, we discuss some later first round players in the upcoming draft the Habs might take a look at if they manage to acquire another first rounder or two in this year's trade deadline.

A special quick bonus episode in which we discuss how the Montreal Canadiens choosing to honour PK Subban before tomorrow night's game against the Nashville Predators provides Habs fans a proper chance to say goodbye to a player who was a part of the fabric of the city in recent years, both during and after his time here.

Director of North American Scout for Dobber Prospects Sebastian High joins us to talk about a variety of Montreal Canadiens topics. In the first episode of this two-parter, we first discuss the implications of the Owen Beck and Riley Kidney trades in the CHL, take a closer look at Jarred Davidson's place in the Habs system, debate Nick Suzuki's true place on a future contending Habs team, and then discuss Adam Fantilli and other players the Habs could draft with their first pick in the 2023 NHL Draft.

Inside today's Locked on Canadiens:

The Montreal Canadiens got absolutely obliterated by the Seattle Kraken on Monday night, and the hosts have reached their answer for this season; the Habs are not a good hockey team. They break down a disastrous non-effort by the team and discuss whether or not the team has hit rock bottom yet this season. And for those asking, no it's not just the cursed Reverse Retro jerseys anymore.

Out of everything that happened in a no-good, very bad night, there was a small bright spot for the Habs. Juraj Slafkovsky looked a lot more confident in the loss to Seattle, and with the Habs still in a serious tailspin is it time to give him a longer run on the top line?

Also, with the NHL Trade Deadline looming in just over a month, is it time for the Canadiens to consider retaining salary on some of their longer term contracts in order to move them out? Scott and Laura take a look at the cap situation, and why impending extensions might make salary retention a bad idea in the immediate future. However, is there a case to be made for potentially taking on a bit of cap in the long-term?

Inside today's Locked on Canadiens

Following the end of the World Juniors tournament the Montreal Canadiens saw two of their prospects traded in their respective junior leagues! Scott lays out the moves that sent Owen Beck to the Peterborough Petes in the OHL, and Riley Kidney to the Gatineau Olympiques in the QMJHL. Also out west, Jared Davidson and the Seattle Thunderbirds appear primed to receive a major boost as well!

Then it's time for Three Up, Three Down!

On the down list this week for Scott is Michael Pezzetta whose lack of discipline is endangering his lineup spot going forward, but also Martin St-Louis finds himself on the down list too as he continues to learn the nuances that come with NHL coaching jobs. Finally, while the hosts love Brendan Gallagher's efforts every night, is his injury history turning his contract into a total anchor, or can it be saved?

On the up list though is of course the suddenly red-hot Joel Armia who is raising not only his trade value, but also the value of his linemate Evgenii Dadonov as well! Also on the rise is the unstoppable Small Goals Boy, Cole Caufield who continues to make history with his goal-scoring pace for the Habs. Also rounding out the three is Rafaël Harvey-Pinard, who has been at the forefront of the Laval Rocket's rebounding form to start the new year.

Inside today's Locked on Canadiens:

The Montreal Canadiens lost, again. So instead of discussing the game at large Scott and Laura discuss the selection of Nick Suzuki to the NHL All-Star Game for the second time. They also debate whether or not Cole Caufield should have been the actual selection before deciding to launch a show campaign to get Caufield there anyways.

Then with it being Friday it's time for the Locked on Canadiens Mailbag!

The hosts dive into a number of prospect related questions, namely surrounding the super talented Russian star Matevi Michkov, and whether or not the Habs should take a risk on a player who is unlikely to be in the NHL in the next two years. Scott breaks down why the ultra skilled forward will be in the KHL for the immediate future, and why he might not be the selection if the Canadiens are selecting in the top five.

The hosts also discuss wildly unrealistic trade scenarios, which Habs player they would want to be stuck in a plane crash with, and what do the Habs do with vets who just aren't performing at all?
