Locked On Canadiens - Daily Podcast on the Montreal Canadiens

On today's episode we have a quick Laval Rocket recap, and discuss how the team has shown flashes of the greatness with which they played last season. We then try to figure out what the Montreal Canadiens' plan for Juraj Slafkovsky and why they keep playing him on the fourth line or in the bottom six. Is it time they send him to Laval, and who should get the call-up in exchange? Finally, we discuss the Habs prospects at the World Junior Hockey tournament and specifically touch on Vinzenz Rohrer, Filip Mesar, Adam Engstrom, Lane Hutson, Owen Beck, and of course Joshua Roy.

Inside today's Locked on Canadiens

The Montreal Canadiens lost again, and once again the effort was uneven across the lineup. The hosts break down the bit of the game that they can before moving on to other topics. Martin St-Louis made a statement with the healthy scratch of veteran forward Joel Armia, stating that he had lost patience at this point in the season. If Armia's play was poor enough to be a healthy scratch, what is it going to take to apply that to other veterans on this team?

With the trade deadline about two months away, the rumours have already begun to fly, and in Montreal they centre squarely on defender Joel Edmundson. Reports state that the Canadiens are asking for a first round pick plus add-ons to move the veteran defender at the Trade Deadline this year. The hosts debate if Kent Hughes can actually pull that sort of deal off again, and if not what would they accept in place of a first round choice.

There is no question that the Montreal Canadiens are now sellers at and before the NHL Trade deadline. We look through the entire Habs roster and discuss:

-Whether the player is a trade asset or an untouchable

-Whether the player's trade value has increased or decreased since the beginning of the season

-What the Habs could get for the player

We also discuss the recent on-ice trend from the Habs and how this is a challenge Martin St Louis cannot afford to take too long overcoming.

They also take a peek at the listeners favourite moments, many of which mentioned the 10-1 win in what might have been Carey Price's last game as a Hab, or the full atmosphere of the Bell Centre on draft day.

It's also Friday, which means it's time for the mailbag once more! The hosts tackle Brock Boeser trade suggestions, what do Hughes and Gorton do about the upcoming trade deadline, and who has impressed the most at World Juniors?

The Montreal Canadiens lost in overtime to the Colorado Avalanche, and we look for bright spots in the game. We discuss a list that had Nick Suzuki ranked as the 6th-ranked under-25 player in the NHL - was it simply clickbait, was it on purpose to rile opposing team fans up, or was it merited? Finally, there are rumours that the Montreal Canadiens and the Buffalo Sabres are discussing Devon Levi. Is he available? Will he be a solution for the Habs? Is it just chatter?

Inside today's Locked on Canadiens:

A listener asked both Scott and Laura to break down what a future, Stanley Cup winning roster would look like for the Montreal Canadiens. How many of the current veterans are still around and will Nick Suzuki and Cole Caufield still reign supreme on the top line? Where does Juraj Slafkovsky and Owen Beck fit in the plans? Also, what do you do with all the defensive prospects?

Also, with the Vancouver Canucks struggling and seemingly lost at sea a bit, can the Montreal Canadiens feasibly make a trade for Brock Boeser? Scott breaks down how a change of scenery might help Boeser regain his best form, and what the Habs need to do to possibly make the trade happen at all.

Plus plenty more in the listener mailbag!

The Montreal Canadiens have announced that P.K. Subban will be honoured at the Bell Centre prior to the Habs' match against the Nashville Predators on the 12th of January. We discuss P.K. Subban's complicated legacy in Montreal and what we hope for from that game. We also expand on a few mailbag questions we received and discuss whether it acceptable to purposely tank a season in the hopes of getting a high draft pick in the NHL Draft the following summer. Of course, as always, we begin the episode by recapping the latest Habs game - against the Arizona Coyotes at Mullett arena.

Inside today's Locked on Canadiens:

Montreal played well, until they didn't against the Tampa Bay Lightning as the rebuilding club received another harsh remind of what this season is going to be like at times. There were a few bright spots, but overall there are still some worrying signs around the vets on this team, while the kids remain largely impressive. With a western trip coming up this week how can the Habs get themselves into a spot to keep morale high in the locker room?

With the NHL roster freeze looming on December 19th, the chances of Kent Hughes making any sudden trades is unlikely, but there will be plenty of opportunities for the Montreal GM to make calls and set his lines so to speak. While Hughes has stuck by his original asks in previous trades, when it comes to names like Josh Anderson or Joel Edmundson who seem to be on the radar of several teams, should he soften his stance to make a trade happen?

Finally it's a mini Three Up, Three Down!

The hosts combine the usual monday ranking into one segment this time as they look at rising stars and falling arcs around the Canadiens organization. Is Owen Beck's revenge tour good enough to get him on this list, or will a four point night by Jared Davidson bump him off? What about the return of Justin Barron alongside a red-hot Anthony Richard? On the poorer side, Canadiens goalies across the organization seem to be struggling, as are some veterans on defence, so who makes the down list this week?
