Locked On Canadiens - Daily Podcast on the Montreal Canadiens

Inside today's Locked on Canadiens:

First up, the Habs meet the Sabres on Tuesday night which means it's game preview time! Can the Montreal keep their good vibes going from Saturday's electric win over the Flyers, or will the still slumping Buffalo Sabres continue to be a thorn in the side of the Habs?

Also in the news around the Canadiens hockey world is the newly released book from longtime equipment manager Pierre Gervais, and it includes a devastating look at Dominique Ducharme's time as Canadiens head coach. From the team apparently expecting Luke Richardson to be named coach instead to not telling players such as Cole Caufield that they weren't playing until the last minute, there is a lot for the hosts to unpack.

The Montreal Canadiens front office appeared on a pair of podcasts in the last week, a great display of transparency as the Montreal Canadiens continue through their rebuild. Scott and Laura take a peek at the appearance by Kent Hughes first and examine what he's appeared to have learned as GM of the team so far, and how he wants to push this team to the next level. There's also plenty of insight on how Vinny Lecavalier joined the team, and how he was very nearly a New York Ranger as well!

The Montreal Canadiens beat the Philadelphia Flyers in a shootout after a wild Saturday night at the Bell Centre, and we have thoughts ranging from Mike Matheson's home debut in a Habs uniform to Cole Caufield's brilliance once again. We then have our 3 Up and 3 Down, in which we detail the Laval Rocket's issues, the Habs' goaltending regressing to the mean, and Juraj Slafkovsky's lack of minutes but praise Lane Hutson's production, Owen Beck's play, and Cole Caufield as usual.

Inside today's Locked on Canadiens:

The Montreal Canadiens got a taste of their own medicine against the Columbus Blue Jackets on Thursday night, losing 6-4 in a strange affair. The hosts break down the contest including a roller coaster of a game for Jordan Harris, and why despite the loss there isn't much reason to panic if you're the Habs.

Then, because it's Friday, that means it's time for the mailbag!

Scott and Laura dig into listener questions, mainly focused on the immediate future of the Montreal Canadiens young defensive group. What should the Habs do when Mike Matheson returns in the near future? Matheson is obviously going to play a huge role, but none of the young prospects have shown that they deserve to be sent to the AHL as well. At the same time, what do the Habs do with both Justin Barron and Mattias Norlinder playing well for the Laval Rocket?

Also, what sort of food should the Bell Centre serve that they don't already? Who would lead a Habs Christmas album? What other colour snow should you never eat?

It's a very special edition of Locked on Canadiens!

Laura welcomes Jay Forster from Locked on Blue Jackets to the show today to discuss all the goings on in Columbus ahead of the Canadiens/Blue Jackets game on Thursday!

Among the first things discussed is the absolute mountain of injuries facing the Blue Jackets as their injury list rivals that of the Montreal Canadiens last season, but how is the Columbus team different than the Habs last year? Also, where has this year gone totally wrong for the Blue Jackets? Despite landing Johnny Gaudreau and retaining Patrik Laine the offence has continued to struggle and have been a tough watch on many nights.

Then, it's time for Jay to grill Laura on the surprising start by the Montreal Canadiens! Is the goaltending duo of Jake Allen and Samuel Montembeault going to be able to keep up sustainable pace as the season wears on? Or are there still some concerns about the coaching and playing style that are going to bring Montreal back down to earth? What issues are facing the Habs, and can Nick Suzuki and Cole Caufield overcome them? Or is Montreal's dominant one line approach going to end up sinking Montreal when regression happens?

Plus, Laura effuses nothing but praise for Martin St-Louis and his impact on the Habs young players and some veterans!

Finally, the duo of Laura and Jay give their predictions on the Columbus vs. Montreal game, and what they expect from both teams. Can Mike Hoffman keep his run of form going and help the Habs avoid the defensive issues they suffered against the Devils? Will the Blue Jackets beleaguered, very inexperienced defence cost them against the Habs?

The Montreal Canadiens lost to the New Jersey Devils, who are on a 10-game winning streak. We discuss the Canadiens top line having an uncharacteristically poor game and what the Canadiens can take away from the loss. We then discuss Jonathan Drouin's poor injury luck and what the Canadiens need to do with him on IR to fill out their forward lines. Finally, is it time for Juraj Slafkovsky to be sent down to the AHL, purely for the purposes of playing more minutes?

Inside today's Locked on Canadiens:

The Montreal Canadiens won a third straight game, defeating the Pittsburgh Penguins in overtime thanks to the red-hot Mike Hoffman and Kirby Dach. Scott and Laura take a look at the game, and how the Habs this year are refusing to fall into the same ruts they did last year. Also, can they manage to derail a suddenly dominant New Jersey Devils team?

With it being the first show of the week, it's also time for the Three Up, Three Down segments!

While the Habs are playing inspired hockey, their AHL affiliate has struggled and Scott has dubious honours to dole out in response to that. But who else makes the down list for the past week?

Once again on the flipside there are so many great options for the hosts to pick from in the Three Up segment. Chief among them is Mike Hoffman, who is continuing to run wild offensively after a slow start to the season in Montreal. Also in the spotlight is Kirby Dach, who continues to shine on the Canadiens' top line, so the question has to be asked, did the Habs fleece the Blackhawks? Besides the two forwards, who else was a rising star in the host's eyes last week?

Inside today's Locked on Canadiens:

The Habs are looking to run their winning streak to three games in a row on Saturday when they clash with the Pittsburgh Penguins. Montreal memorably pulled off a big comeback in the previous meeting between these two teams and sent the Penguins on a long losing streak. Can the Habs take advantage of a weakened Pittsburgh defence or is Sidney Crosby going to make some magic happen on Saturday night?

Then, it's on to the Friday Mailbag!

Scott digs into listener questions such as the Michkov vs. Bedard debate, and what the Canadiens should do if they end up with first overall. Does Sean Monahan to the Capitals in a trade make sense for Montreal and for the Capitals?

Which rookie defender has impressed the most this season? Is it Kaiden Guhle on the top pair? Arber Xhekaj taking souls? How about the underrated Jordan Harris? Also, Scott answers a question about Mathieu Joseph and KFC poutine, and it only slightly breaks his brain!

Inside today's Locked on Canadiens

With the Canadiens playing in back to back games, there was some concern if they would hold up well against a Canucks team looking for another win as well. Those concerns appeared to be unnecessary as Montreal romped to a 5-2 win thanks to another huge effort by the young core of the team. Nick Suzuki scored 55 seconds in to set the tone, and a pair of goals from Kirby Dach helped the Habs coast to a second straight win. Even with the advanced metrics looking ugly, Scott breaks down why this game was never even close and why it's okay to enjoy the wins when they happen.

With the World Juniors tournament starting in just over a month there are early projections coming out for Team Canada and others. While Joshua Roy and Riley Kidney appear to be early favourites to make the team, Owen Beck looks to be a longshot right now. Is Beck being snubbed, or is this a case of Hockey Canada over thinking the roster again?

To wrap up the show Scott takes some time to check in on the Laval Rocket, and examines their early season struggles. Is it the goaltending from Cayden Primeau and Kevin Poulin? How are the featured prospects in Xavier Simoneau, Jesse Ylönen and Rafaël Harvey-Pinard playing? Scott takes a full look before the Rocket play again on Friday night!

Inside today's Locked on Canadiens:

The Habs and the Red Wings played a massively entertaining game in Detroit with the Habs snagging a 3-2 shootout victory. The Montreal penalty killers played a fantastic game while Jake Allen was in full brick wall mode for the Canadiens, and to cap it off Mike Hoffman tallied a pair of even-strength goals to round out the night. Scott has the full recap and plenty of thoughts as the Habs snap their three-game losing streak!

The game was not without its ugliness however as rookie Juraj Slafkovsky found himself ejected late in the third period for a boarding penalty on Matt Luff. Scott wonders if this means a suspension is coming down the pipeline for the rookie, or if he'll skate by because the Department of Player Safety is notoriously inconsistent? At the same time, Scott also takes a moment to take a look at Mike Hoffman's game in Detroit, and if he can use it to channel some consistency going forward.

Finally, the Habs take on a very up and down Vancouver Canucks team on Wednesday night, Scott has a game preview, and what we can possibly expect when the puck drops at the Bell Centre!

Inside today's Locked on Canadiens:

Josh Anderson has been suspended two games for his boarding penalty against the Vegas Golden Knights on Saturday night. His absence leaves a gap physically in the lineup, so the question becomes who will step into that role? Scott examines whether the two game suspension is justified or not, and what the Habs need to do next to get Josh Anderson back into form for the rest of the season.

Also in the news is that Rem Pitlick was held out of practice on Monday before being placed on waivers with the intent of him joining the Laval Rocket. Scott takes a look at why Pitlick was the player on waivers, and how his season has been disappointing compared to his career season last year. If he clears, what role can Pitlick play for the Rocket? If he's claimed, where does that leave the Montreal Canadiens?

Finally, with two forwards missing for the immediate future, Juraj Slafkovsky and others now have a change to establish a spot higher in the the Montreal lineup. Who has the most to gain, and who has the most to lose with the Habs now down a pair of forwards?
