Locked On Canadiens - Daily Podcast on the Montreal Canadiens

Inside today's Locked on Canadiens:

The Montreal Canadiens were good, then very bad, then pretty good again in a 6-4 loss to the Vegas Golden Knights on Saturday. While the young stars like Cole Caufield and Nick Suzuki continued to impress, the veterans struggled mightily again, including Josh Anderson who may also be facing a suspension following his ejection. The hosts break it all down!

Then, it's time for Three Up, Three Down!

With the veterans struggling, who makes the hosts down list? Is it Josh Anderson who may end up being suspended in the upcoming week? Is it Joel Edmundson who is shaking of the injury rust, and maybe trying to do a bit too much? Certainly on the list is the Boston Bruins for their signing of Mitchell Miller late last week.

On the upside there are no shortage of players who could be on the rise this week with the Habs top line in full flight. The trio of Nick Suzuki, Cole Caufield and Kirby Dach is becoming a force to be reckoned with across the NHL as they dominated the score sheet for Montreal. Besides them however, who else in Montreal earned a spot on the up list for this week? Kaiden Guhle had some really strong moments, as did a handful of prospects, but who makes the host's final list?

Inside today's Locked on Canadiens:

Montreal wrapped up their long road trip with an overtime loss to the Winnipeg Jets on Thursday night, despite the best efforts on goaltender Samuel Montembeault. The game also marked the return of Joel Edmundson to the lineup, so the hosts take a crack at breaking down the game, and how the Habs can shuffle the defensive alignment a bit going forward. Also, did we mention how good Montembeault was? Scott takes a look at what a regression might mean for the back up netminder, and how that impacts the Habs.

Then, because it is the last show of the week the hosts answers all sorts of listener questions in the Friday Mailbag! What is their out of the box way to fix the Canadiens still struggling power play? They'll look back on who has been the biggest draft bust in both recent and distant memory for the Montreal Canadiens. Could the Habs make a trade for Tyler Myers to help aid their tank? Scott gives his thought on Auston Matthews and the Flyers near-line brawl and so much more!

Inside today's Locked on Canadiens:

The Habs and Wild squared off again, this time in Minnesota and much like their first meeting a few weeks ago the Wild frustrated a young Habs team across the board. Scott and Laura break down what started out as a really strong effort, and why things went sideways as the game went on.

Speaking of the game, it's time for a good ol' fashioned officiating rant from Scott once again. Between a blatantly missed high-stick on a goal to Brendan Gallagher getting cross-checked on his back the work of Chris Lee was beyond suspect once again.

Finally, Evgenii Dadonov has been absent from practice for the last few days after being a healthy scratch. Scott and Laura take a look at his overall season to see what is up with his current struggles and what he can do to get back into the lineup. Or is there something else in the works for the former Vegas Golden Knight?

The Montreal Canadiens are racking up wins in what is supposed to be a rebuilding season. Should we be concerned about their 2023 NHL Draft Lottery odds? We discuss why we are not too concerned about the wins. We then feature an excerpt from new podcast Locked On NHL Prospects, in which Hadi Kalakeche discusses the development paths for Shane Wright and Juraj Slafkovsky and whether either or both are better off in the AHL at his point in the season given the minutes they are playing. Finally we look over at the Toronto Maple Leafs' start to the season and discuss how something has to change soon, otherwise their season might go to waste.

Inside today's Locked on Canadiens:

Christian Dvorak had a hat trick, Cole Caufield scored a pair and Juraj Slafkovsky potted a goal in a return from injury as the Montreal Canadiens romped to a huge win over the St. Louis Blues on Saturday night. Scott and Laura take a look at how the Canadiens overcame a slow start and early deficit to bounce back and find themselves above both Toronto and Ottawa in the division standings.

After that it's time for Three Up, Three Down!

Despite a strong week in terms of results, who on the Habs could be pulling their weight even more? While many fans will point to Mike Hoffman or Jonathan Drouin who else makes the down list for this past week inside the Canadiens organization?

After an exciting week of games, there are a ridiculous amount of potential candidates for the up list this week! Would it be the red hot Cole Caufield, or the hat-trick hero Christian Dvorak? How about the goaltending tandem of Samuel Montembeault and Jake Allen? Scott and Laura list their picks for the best of the best in the Habs organization!

The Montreal Canadiens beat the Buffalo Sabres in Buffalo with a fantastic performance from Samuel Montembeault and timely goals from Brendan Gallagher, Kaiden Guhle (scoring his first career NHL goal), and some combination of Josh Anderson, Christian Dvorak, and Brendan Gallagher. We discuss the game, including the defense and the man advantage, and then move on to the Habs mailbag questions, which involve all sorts of fun NHL trade scenarios, and more.

Inside today's Locked on Canadiens:

The Montreal Canadiens made a trade on Wednesday! Kent Hughes shipped Cam Hillis to the Chicago Blackhawks in exchange for 2018 first-round pick Nicolas Beaudin. While Beaudin is set to start with the Laval Rocket at the end of the week, there is plenty to love about the latest Kent Hughes trade. Who is Beaudin, and what can fans expect from him during this season? Scott breaks it all down.

The Laval Rocket are off to a 1-4-1 start following a loss to the Belleville Senators on Wednesday night. Despite a strong showing from the team as a whole, they lost with just eight seconds left on the clock, so what is going wrong for the team? Scott takes a look at who is performing well, including Mattias Norlinder, and what might need changing as the team tries to get itself back on track this weekend.

The Habs are also back on the road, travelling to Buffalo for a showdown with the Sabres on Thursday night. Despite losing two games there is some good news for the Habs as first overall pick Juraj Slafkovsky returned to practice on Wednesday. Will the giant Slovak be back in time for the Sabres game, and if so, where can he be slotted back into the lineup?

The Montreal Canadiens may have lost to the Minnesota Wild, but we wanted to highlight a few bright spots in their game. However, the power play was once again a major story and we look forward to a time where it can finally click and the chemistry is working... to that end, is Arber Xhekaj the answer instead of Chris Wideman? Finally, we talk about some players who had good games such as Kirby Dach, and look ahead to the Buffalo Sabres game and wonder how the Habs can follow in those footsteps.

Inside today's Locked on Canadiens:

Carey Price met with the media for the first time since it was announced that it was highly unlikely that he would play hockey again without major surgery. Scott and Laura take a look at what the Habs goaltender had to say about his immediate future, and what needs to possibly happen to see Carey Price suit up for the Canadiens again.

Also, there is a Habs game on Tuesday night as they welcome the Minnesota Wild to the Bell Centre. Despite the Wild having an explosive offence, the team has struggled mightily to win games thanks to a poor goaltending situation. Can the timely scoring from the Habs offence take advantage of this, or will the top end firepower of the Wild hand the Habs a second straight loss?

The hosts also touch on some leftover mailbag questions from previous weeks! Who will be a surprising remnant of this season? Should the Montreal Canadiens entertain any sort of trade offer for Arber Xhekaj as the season goes on? Also, what should Xhekaj's official nickname be going forward?

Inside today's Locked on Canadiens:

After a wild night against the Arizona Coyotes, the Canadiens found themselves on the losing end of a contest against the Dallas Stars. Scott and Laura break down the game, and why despite the loss it was a pretty good night for a number of players on the Habs overall.

Also, with it being Monday that means Three Up, Three Down is back!

Who in the Canadiens organization lands on the down list this week? Scott and Laura have few to choose from overall, but take umbrage with the Habs dysfunctional power play above all else. Who else makes the list? Listen and find out!

On the flipside of things, there are almost too many options for the up list this week! Owen Beck and Filip Mesar lit up the OHL this past week, with Beck in particular putting together an incredible six point effort in a single game. Mesar collected a few goals as well, including an overtime winner in his debut weekend. It wasn't just the prospects shining however, Juraj Slafkovsky and Arber Xhekaj both registered their first NHL goals, while Xhekaj also collected his first NHL fight. Who makes the list with such a crowded group?
