Locked On Canadiens - Daily Podcast on the Montreal Canadiens

Inside today's Locked on Canadiens:

The Montreal Canadiens announced on Wednesday that they have signed 2021 first round pick Logan Mailloux to an entry-level contract. Despite playing just 12 games last year following his suspension in the OHL for off-ice behavior, Kent Hughes believed it was the right time for this deal. Scott takes a look at why he would have waited a little while longer in regards to Mailloux's play to offer him a deal at all.

The Laval Rocket received another huge boost in the form of Alex Belzile, Anthony Richard and Mitchell Stephens clearing waivers on Wednesday afternoon. Scott breaks down what their arrival means for the Rocket, and how expectations are higher than ever before for the Habs AHL affiliate.

Finally, with just two preseason games left and a handful of NHL spots up for grabs who is going to claim them? Scott looks at the back up goalie battle, as well as the role Jesse Ylönen and Rafaël Harvey-Pinard might play for the Habs this season. Also, who is going to make the team on defence out of all the young prospects, and who is going to head to the Laval Rocket after this weekend?

Inside today's Locked on Canadiens:

The Habs played their final preseason game without their final Opening Night roster(likely anyways), in another uneven effort against the Ottawa Senators. Scott takes a look at the game as a whole, and breaks down his stand out players, including the debut of new captain Nick Suzuki.

It was also a busy morning for the Montreal Canadiens, as Owen Beck was signed to a three-year entry level contract before Tuesday's game against the Senators. Scott breaks down his rapid ascension from the NHL Draft to the top of many fans prospect lists. What is the expectation for him when he returns to the OHL this year, and can he break into Team Canada for the next World Juniors tournament?

Speaking of prospect moves, 2022 first round pick Filip Mesar was one of seven players sent to the Laval Rocket on Tuesday morning. Scott takes a peak at who will join the AHL camp, and who is also on waivers for the Habs. He also runs through how Mesar went from a likely OHL-bound player, to potentially becoming a huge piece of the Laval Rocket offence this upcoming season.

Inside today's Locked on Canadiens:

The Montreal Canadiens have lost another preseason game, dropping a 5-1 contest to the Toronto Maple Leafs on Monday night. Scott takes a look at where things went wrong, and despite the bad score line, why the Canadiens didn't actually play all that badly.

Following that it's time for a little prospect discussion as Scott compares the preseason efforts of Justin Barron and Arber Xhekaj. While it was assumed Barron would be a lock to make the Habs, his play has suffered a little bit, while Xhekaj has seized much of the opportunity being afforded to him. Is starting in Laval going to be the best course for Barron, while Xhekaj might be a surprise to make the NHL roster.

Finally, the rumors are out and about again and Scott has some thoughts on them. First is the Penguins apparently calling all 31 other NHL teams and saying former first round pick Pierre-Olivier Joseph is available if teams want him. Can the Habs find space for the 23 year old, or is it better to let their current prospect core fight for that spot? The Canucks are also trying to offload Michael Ferland's contract to free up future cap space for upcoming extensions. With the Habs looking to accrue more picks and prospects, could Kent Hughes be interested if the price is right?

Inside today's Locked on Canadiens:

Scott is flying solo this week, and the first order of business is taking a peak at the giant wave of cuts the Canadiens made going into the weekend. Who has earned a spot with the Rocket in their AHL camp, and who is heading back to junior? Is there anyone Scott wanted to see stick around for another game?

Then it's time for the weekly Three Up, Three Down segment!

Scott breaks down which plays left a bit to be desired in their play this week. While there are some expected names on the list, there's a potential unexpected name as well, but not for all the wrong reasons. Can Justin Barron and Juraj Slafkovsky bounce back from slower starts to fully cement their NHL places? Or will a short trip to the AHL serve them both well in the long term?

On the up list however is a mix of everyone! Players destined for the AHL have put in strong showings, while Cole Caufield continues to do Cole Caufield things with frightening regularity, but with added defensive awareness added to his game. Meanwhile the duo of Kaiden Guhle and Arber Xhekaj have brought the hurt to their opponents, while also playing well at both ends of the ice. Can both rookies keep their strong play up, and earn an NHL spot out of training camp?

The Montreal Canadiens wrapped up their third preseason game against the Winnipeg Jets. Despite a really strong showing from Cole Caufield and Brendan Gallagher, the team came up just short in a 4-3 loss. The hosts have plenty of praise for Caufield, and some vets, but also Kaiden Guhle who was everywhere on the ice. Also, Logan Stanley has made Scott's list of enemies.

It's also the Friday Mailbag once again! Scott and Laura dive into all sorts of questions from their listeners ranging from the Habs to replacing a face on Mount Rushmore! What is Jake Allen's trade value right now or is it worthwhile to just hold on to him?

After two games, what are the reasonable expectations for Juraj Slafkovsky? Scott breaks down why patience is the key, and what his season might actually look like.

All that and more!

The Montreal Canadiens and Toronto Maple Leafs played the most preseason game of all time, with Toronto having to play two forwards on defence for most of the game. While Montreal fell in their second preseason game there's plenty to look at from the game. Scott and Laura break down their standouts from the game, including first round pick Filip Mesar, and who could be doing a bit more overall.

The Habs have little time to rest as well, as they head to Winnipeg to play the Jets on Thursday evening. The Jets have released their lineup, so who can we expect to suit up for Montreal? Scott and Laura discuss some of the things they'd like to see from the team as they play their third game out of four this week.

Finally, there's a lot of discussion around a highly controversial ranking of NHL coaches, naturally the hosts wade in with their takes on who is actually the most attractive coach in the league right now.

Inside today's Locked on Canadiens:

Locked on Canadiens has teamed up with Jack Bond of Paramount Sports for a unique season preview for the Montreal Canadiens!

While the Habs were always going to be longshots to win much of anything this year, just how long are the odds for the team to win the Stanley Cup? Or the Atlantic Division? What is the actual over/under on the points they're expected to earn this year? We break it all down, and listen to the reasoning behind why the team is more than likely going to finish at the bottom of the standings again.

However, it's not all bad as the Habs have a couple of potential surprises for smart bets this year as well. If the team overachieves at all, could Martin St. Louis steal some Jack Adams votes? Also, can Cole Caufield continue his impressive form from last year and top the 30 goal plateau?

Who will surprise, and can the Montreal Canadiens take the first major strides forward after a disastrous season last year? Tune in to today's Locked on Canadiens season preview with Paramount Sports to find out!

On today's episode, we discuss the Montreal Canadiens' first preseason game against the New Jersey Devils and which players stood out in the game. Since it is the preseason we wanted to focus mostly on positives. We discuss our impressions of the following players: Juraj Slafkovsky, Filip Mesar, Kirby Dach, Jake Allen, Owen Beck, Mike Matheson, Kaiden Guhle, and Mike Hoffman.

Inside today's Locked on Canadiens:

The return of semi-meaningful games is upon us once again! Scott and Laura take a look at the Montreal Canadiens first game of the preseason against the New Jersey Devils. It's expected that Juraj Slafkovsky and Kirby Dach will make their Canadiens debuts, so what are the hosts expecting going into the game?

With the first week of training camp in the books, who makes the Three Up and who makes the Three Down lists? It's still early so plenty of players have a chance to switch spots on the list. There's of course praise for Owen Beck as usual, but also some other lesser known prospects have made their statement, in addition to several vets looking to bounce back.

Who needs to step up going into actual preseason games? The hosts have their picks there as well!
