Locked On Canadiens - Daily Podcast on the Montreal Canadiens

Inside today's Locked on Canadiens:

The return of semi-meaningful games is upon us once again! Scott and Laura take a look at the Montreal Canadiens first game of the preseason against the New Jersey Devils. It's expected that Juraj Slafkovsky and Kirby Dach will make their Canadiens debuts, so what are the hosts expecting going into the game?

With the first week of training camp in the books, who makes the Three Up and who makes the Three Down lists? It's still early so plenty of players have a chance to switch spots on the list. There's of course praise for Owen Beck as usual, but also some other lesser known prospects have made their statement, in addition to several vets looking to bounce back.

Who needs to step up going into actual preseason games? The hosts have their picks there as well!

As the Montreal Canadiens training camp gets underway and we start looking forward to NHL preseason games, we answer Habs mailbag questions such as: what is Josh Anderson's trade value? Who is Arber Xhekaj comparable to in the NHL? Will he be able to leapfrog other defensemen to make the NHL? Should the Habs look to pick players off of waivers given their priority position in the standings? Did Dominique Ducharme do enough to explain Cole Caufield slump back when he was still the coach? And more.

Inside today's Locked on Canadiens:

With the Prospect Showcase in the rearview mirror and training camp looming just ahead Scott and Laura take a moment to examine the current discussion around first overall pick Juraj Slafkovsky and his performance at the Rookie Showcase. While his point totals were small, the panic about his overall level of play is overblown, and taking time to nurture his growth is going to be key going forward. Patience is a huge factor in the Habs rebuild, and it is no different when applied to Juraj Slafkovsky.

The hosts then dive into a special edition of the mailbag, answering all sorts of listener questions. Who can the Canadiens still bring in on a PTO, what is the ceiling of Logan Mailloux, and who was the underrated star of the Rookie Showcase?

Plus much more!

The Montreal Canadiens participated in a prospect showcase tournament in Buffalo this past weekend, playing against the prospects of the Buffalo Sabres, New Jersey Devils, and Ottawa Senators. We first discuss what surprised us about the tournament before going in depth into our weekly 3 Up, 3 Down where we discussed who impressed us and who didn't. Inside today's Locked on Canadiens:

HOCKEY IS BACK!

The Montreal Canadiens prospects took the ice in Buffalo, New York for day one of the Rookie Showcase against the Buffalo Sabres prospects. Scott was in attendance and has plenty of thoughts to share from what he saw at the Harborcenter.

How good was the combination Juraj Slafkovsky and Filip Mesar? The answer is very very good as their chemistry shined on every single shift, and should help set many fans minds at ease following the NHL Draft. There is also plenty of love for Owen Beck, who was the underrated star of the first night and has done Artturi Lehkonen proud since donning #62.

Who else stood out, and who else do we expect more from as the tournament goes on? Find out all inside the latest episode of Locked on Canadiens!

The Montreal Canadiens have their new captain in Nick Suzuki, and we celebrate with a division crossover with Locked On Detroit Red Wings. We start the episode by talking about what went wrong with the Canadiens this past season and where they can grow from here, before moving on to discuss Nick Suzuki's appointment as captain. We then discuss Ben Chiarot on the Red Wings, what Steve Yzerman's plan is for this team, and then predict where our respective teams will land in the NHL Atlantic Division standings.

Inside today's Locked on Canadiens:

The Montreal Canadiens got some unexpectedly good injury news, as Paul Byron appears to be cleared for a return to start the NHL season. Where does the Habs alternate captain slot into the lineup, or is his clean bill of health and indicator he might be part of a trade in the near future?

With all of their free agents re-signed, the Montreal Canadiens appear to be mostly set as training camp approaches. However, their biggest rival in Toronto still has young defenceman Rasmus Sandin unsigned, should Kent Hughes consider offer sheeting him? While he plays on the left side, he's already a secure NHL-calibre player, which could allow Montreal more time to let Kaiden Guhle and others develop in the AHL as well. On the flipside, is the cost too much that Hughes would have to reconsider his stance on clearing cap space since he took over the team?

Finally, the hosts discuss this week's Rookie Showcase in Buffalo where the Habs prospects will square off with Buffalo, Ottawa and New Jersey's prospects as well. What expectations do the hosts have for some of the bigger names playing? Who is going to be the biggest surprise, can someone like Joshua Roy use this to push for an NHL roster spot?

The Montreal Canadiens have signed Kirby Dach to a 4-year deal and Cayden Primeau to a 3-year deal, and placed Carey Price on offseason LTIR. At the same time, there are strong rumblings that the Habs are close to signing Jake Allen to a multi-year contract extension. We talk about what this means for the Canadiens goaltending picture going forward, and what other moves they may make as we get close to the regular season. In our third segment we answer this week's mailbag questions, which include thoughts on Kaiden Guhle and Arber Xhekaj, the Trois-Rivieres Lions, Sean Monahan, and more.
