Locked On Capitals - Daily Podcast On The Washington Capitals

The Washington Capitals promoted Emily Engel-Natzke making her the first full-time female coach in NHL history.

Emily Engel-Natzke already became the first female coach in in Capitals history when she was hired to be the video coach for the Washington Capitals AHL affiliate Hershey Bears

Engel-Natzke was hired as the video coach for the men’s and women’s teams at Wisconsin. She worked under Badgers head coach Tony Granato.

"Obviously it’s important and it’s significant,” he said. “But as we looked this, we feel like we hired really a qualified person that we brought into the organization two years ago and came in and did an outstanding job. That’s what development is all about.

“For me,” Laviolette continued, “we got the best person — and that’s the most important thing. This was earned and deserved, and I’m excited for the opportunity to be able to work with Emily.”

What player on the Capitals need new contracts? Which players will the move on from?

The pre-season schedule was released. I talk about what games these games mean for the team and players "on the bubble" looking for their big break

Washington Capitals center Nick Backstrom will miss substantial time next season due to a hip resurfacing procedure he had done. Evgeni Malkin would be the perfect player to help fill that role. The ultimate goal is to bring Malkin to the Capitals to help Alex Ovechkin in his quest of being the greatest goal-scorer of all time.

Can the Pittsburgh Penguins keep Evgeni Malkin Kris Letang? Both of those players would need to take a deep discount to stay on the team?

What are the plans for the Washington Capitals and Pittsburgh Penguins plan in net for next season?

The Washington Capitals needs to upgrade their blue line, especially on the left side. Justin Schultz, Michael Kempny and Matt Irwin are all free agents.

Lucas Johansen is an RFA and Alex Alexeyev is injured and will be out 4-5 months. The left side of the defense for the Washington Capitals is thin. What players should they target in this off season?

There are some RFA's that the Capitals should put offer sheet in on. July 13th is coming soon, and the Capitals need to be ready to pull the trigger on a big-name goalie, defenseman and a depth forward.

Nick Backstrom and Tom Wilson are two big names that will be out of the lineup for a big part of next season. Who will they sign to address these holes in the lineup?

July 13th free agency is fast approaching. What free agents would be a good fit on the Washington Capitals? Nick Backstrom will most likely miss all of next season. Who will fill his spot as a top center on the Washington Capitals?

The Capital will need to address the free agents they have their team and decide which players to keep and which player to move on from.

The Capitals will need help in the forward position and in defense. Which free agents are best suited to help them meet that goal:

Evander Kane, Claude Giroux, John Klingberg or Filip Forsberg?

It's a tough balancing act as this Capitals team look to get better and making a stronger push in the playoffs all the while trying to stay under the salary cap.

The Washington Capitals got inconsistent goal tending all season. The Capitals have two RFA's in Vitek Vanecek and Ilya Samsonov. The Capitals are only expected to keep one of the two. Either Vanecek or Samsonov will be the number two goalie on the team. That begs the question of who the number one goalie will be?

Darcy Kuemper, Marc-Andre Fleury, Ville Husso, Jack Campbell, and Braden Holtby are some of the biggest names in pending free agents. Which netminder will the Washington Capitals pursue?

Alex Ovechkin signed a one-day contract and scored a goal for the Dynamo Moscow from "his office" in what would be the left circle.

“Well, the dream came true – to score a goal,” Ovechkin said per sports.ru and a Google Translation. “There was one more moment, it was necessary to beat, but I tried to find Smolov. I must give credit that the guys found me in that position, under the left leg. Well, I got it.”

Ovechkin’s goal came in the 11th minute of the game. He kicked the goal in with his left foot.

In this episode I revisit the Filip Forsberg trade. Often referred to as the worst trade in team history. The trade sent Filip Forsberg to the Nashville Predators and the Washington Capitals received Martin Erat and Michael Latta.

Looking back on this trade did this help Washington propel them from being a 500 team and a powerhouse for years to come or did this set the Capitals back for years.

The Nashville Predators won this trade and it help them for years to come.

So, looking back why did the Washington Capitals make this awful trade?
