Locked On Capitals - Daily Podcast On The Washington Capitals

In this episode of Locked on Capitals I talk about this Capitals aging roster the talk around the league that this team need to get younger and faster. How do they achieve that while still keeping the veteran core together. The caps only have several years of Alex Ovechkin and the "rock the red" era caps. Brian Maclellan made some big moves during free agency signing: Darcy Kuemper, Dylan Strome and Connor Brown to help solidify the Capitals lineup. The Capitals need to get younger but how do they do it when they keep signing or re-signing older players.

Look for these players to fight for a spot on this season's Capitals lineup:

Connor McMichael, center. Alexander Alexeyev, defenseman. Lucas Johansen, defenseman. Aliaksei Protas, forward. Hendrix Lapierre, center

In this episode of Locked on Capitals I do a player review and profile of Nic Dowd. He plays on the fourth line with the Capitals but that doesn't diminish the role he plays on this Capitals team.

53.7%. Out of all of the Caps regular centers this season, Nic Dowd was the only one with a faceoff win percentage above 50%. Coach Laviolette put a lot of trust in Dowd.

Nic Dowd signed a $3.9 million, three-year extension with the Washington Capitals.

giving the reliable center some long-term security and a significant raise.

In this episode of Locked On Capitals I do a player profile on Henrik Borgstrom. Signed as a depth forward, Henrik can also play center. In July near the beginning of free agency, the Capitals signed forward Henrik Borgstrom. According to PuckPedia, it’s a one-year, two-way deal that pays $750,000 at the NHL level and $400,000 at the AHL level.

The Hawks bought out Borgstrom’s contract on Monday. Borgstrom played in 52 games for Chicago in 2021-22, scoring four goals and three assists. He has 13 goals and 13 assists through 110 career NHL games.

The two way contract aspect gives the Caps some flexibility where he can play in Hershey and not have to clear waivers. The season is long and it's good for the Caps the needed depth .

In this special DC Crossover edition I talk with Josh Neighbors of Locked On Nationals about the latest on Juan Soto. The MLB trade deadline is August 2nd and many speculate that Soto will be traded before then. Where does that leave the Nationals that are struggling for leadership and an identity?

In the second segment, we talk about the outlook for the Capitals next season. Brian Maclellan made some big acquisitions by signing Darcy Kuemper, Dylan Strome and Connor Brown to name a few. How will these new players help out this aging roster who is trying to win at least one more cup in this "rock the red" era.

In the final segment we talk about the Nats and Caps future.

In this episode of Locked on Capitals I'm joined by John Walton who does the play by play on the radio side for the Washington Capitals. We talk about the moves that Brian Maclellan made in the offseason, most notably in net, by signing Darcy Kuemper and Charlie Lindgren. We then talk about the acquisition of Connor Brown to replace Tom Wilson in his absence, signing Dylan Strome to replace Nick Backstrom in his absence.

Later in the show we talk about training camp and how Mac has said that none of these positions are set in stone and that these players will have to fight to get these jobs.

In the final segment I talk to John about his career in broadcasting, from the Hershey Bears to the Capitals and even in the Olympics. A truly great conversation that must be heard.

There will be a battle this fall for a lot of the different positions on this Capitals team. Some of those battles will be defense position and who gets a sweater at any given game. I perceive Erik Gustafsson to be a depth signing. Where does he fit into the Capitals lineup?

Gustafsson, 30, recorded 18 points (3g, 15a) in 59 games with the Chicago Blackhawks in 2021-22. The 6’0”, 197-pound defenseman ranked third among Chicago defensemen in points, second in power play points (4) and fourth in shots (79). Gustafsson also represented Sweden at the 2022 World Championship, where he recorded seven assists in eight games.

During the 2020-21 season, Gustafsson recorded 12 points (1g, 11a) and 16:43 time on ice per game in 29 games with Philadelphia and Montreal.

The Nynäshamn, Sweden native skated in 214 games with the Chicago Blackhawks from 2015-16 to 2019-20, producing a career-high 60 points (17g, 43a) in 79 games in 2018-19.

Gustafsson, who was signed as a free agent by Chicago on April 30, 2015, has recorded 149 points (32g, 117a) in 309 career NHL games with Chicago, Calgary, Philadelphia and Montreal. In 31 career playoff games, Gustafsson has registered eight points (1g, 7a) and a +3 plus/minus rating.

Brian Maclellan proved that he isn't done tinkering with the lineup by signing Gabriel Carlsson to a contract. Gabriel will have to battle for his spot on this team. I think that's a good thing. I believe it creates a competitive environment.

The Washington Capitals have signed defenseman Gabriel Carlsson to a one-year, two-way contract ($750,000/$400,000), senior vice president and general manager Brian MacLellan announced today.

Carlsson, 25, recorded nine points (2g, 7a) in 38 games with the Columbus Blue Jackets in 2021-22. The 6’5″, 195-pound defenseman established single-season career highs in goals, assists, points and games played last season, while leading Blue Jackets defensemen in plus/minus (+6). Carlsson also appeared in two games with the Cleveland Monsters of the American Hockey League (AHL), where he registered two assists.

The Orebro, Sweden native has played parts of five seasons with Cleveland, appearing in an AHL career high 67 games with the Monsters in 2018-19. During the 2018-19 season, Carlsson recorded 12 points (2g, 10) and added three assists in eight Calder Cup Playoff games.

Carlsson has recorded 16 points (3g, 13a) in 75 career NHL games with Columbus. In 146 career AHL games with Cleveland, Carlsson has recorded 32 points (6g, 26a).

Carlsson was drafted by Columbus in the first round (29th overall) of the 2015 NHL Draft.

Brian Maclellan really swung for the fences on free agency by signing Darcy Kuemper. But Mac wasn't done yet, he also signed Darcy's backup Charlie Lindgren.

The Washington Capitals have signed goaltender Charlie Lindgren to a three-year, $3.3 million contract, senior vice president and general manager Brian MacLellan announced today. Lindgren contract will carry an average annual value of $1.1 million.

Lindgren, 28, posted a 5-0-0 record with a 1.22 goals-against average and a .958 save percentage in five games with the St. Louis Blues in 2021-22. Lindgren, who made his Blues debut on Dec. 7, 2021, became the first goaltender in franchise history to earn wins in each of his first five appearances. The 6'2", 179-pound goaltender also appeared in 34 games with the Springfield Thunderbirds of the American Hockey League (AHL), where he went 24-7-1 with three shutouts, a 2.21 goals-against average, a .925 save percentage. Lindgren ranked third in the AHL in goals-against average, second in save percentage and tied for fourth in wins last season.

In this episode I recap Dylan Strome and Connor Brown's media availability with the Capitals press core. Connor Brown is slated to play on the top line right wing in Tom Wilson's absence. Brown, who has played seven NHL seasons for the Leafs and Senators, scored 10 goals with 29 assists in 64 games played last season. He’s posted a career-best 21 goals, which he did in the 2020-21 season with Ottawa.

I also talk about Dylan Strome and his media availability today. Both Brown and Strome know each other and are excited to be playing together. They had this to say: "“I remember my first game in junior, I didn’t really know what to expect,” said Strome of a loaded Erie team that also featured Connor McDavid and Andre Burakovsky. “I was really young and just finding my way. We lost the first game of the season in overtime. (Brown) came off the ice and was upset and frustrated that we lost. He’s a great leader. He was the captain of our team then and he’s a great hockey player.”

“Just everything about their team,” Strome said, asked why he picked the Caps over other suitors. “The way they play, their style of game, it fits my game really good, and obviously there are some great wingers to play with, as well.”

The Washington Capitals had a need at second line center with Nick Backstrom recovering from a hip resurfacing procedure that was done. The outlook from that procedure is not too good. Many players never returned after having that done, or if they did it was only for a short period of time

On the second day of free agency Capitals GM Brian Maclellan signed Dylan Strome to a one a year deal worth $3.5 million dollars. That fits perfectly into the Capitals plans as Nick Backstrom is due to miss a substantial amount of time.

Dylan has faced some great adversity in his hockey career. He played with elite company in his early days in the OHL playing with Connor McDavid and MItch Marner.

The start of his Career with the Coyotes was a shaky one at best, but really found his home on the Chicago Blackhawks. He did experience some time in and out of the lineup, but all in all was a very productive member of the Blackhawks team. Dylan is coming off a strong year with the Chicago Blackhawks that saw him dish 22 goals and 26 assists in 69 games.
