Locked On Capitals - Daily Podcast On The Washington Capitals

In this episode of Locked on Capitals Dan does a player profile and review of Garnet Hathaway. Garnet along with Tom Wilson are part of the sandpaper or "tough guy" group on the Washington Capitals.

Garnet is not just a tough guy. He is part of the fourth line that included Nic Dowd and Carl Hagelin. That line saw great production and Garnet was on the ice for 38 Washington goals and 21 opponent goals, Hathaway’s 64.4 goals-for percentage was the best among full-time Caps players. Part of his success is due to goaltenders saving 94.7 percent during his shifts

Hathaway has scored 14 goals and 26 points a career-high. Where does Hathaway see his career going next season and why has he had such great success in Washington.

In this special crossover edition of Locked on Capitals/Flyers we talk about the moves that the Washington Capitals made in the off-season and if those moves were enough to help the Capitals make a deeper push into the playoffs in the season ahead. We also talk about the injuries the Capitals have faced. Most notably Tom Wilson and Nick Backstrom and what the injuries mean to the Capitals. We talk about the acquisitions of Dylan Strome and Connor Brown and the role they will play with next seasons Caps. We then talk about the netminding situation and how we think the Darcy Kuemper and Charlie Lindgren tandem will do.

Later in the show we talk about the Flyers and their new coach John Tortorella and the potential impact he will have on the Flyers. Later we talk about the netminding situation in Philly and how does Carter Hart affect that.

The Washington Capitals who are usually in win now mode because of Alex Ovechkin, and their quest to make a push in the playoffs have depleted their pipeline or future players. But recently the Capitals have been smarter and haven't sold the farm just so they can win some games today and forget about the future. The Capitals drafted some really great players in this year draft in Ivan Miroshnichenko and Ryan Chesley and I think that the future looks bright after the current core of players moves on or retires.

Later in the show I talk about how Ted Leonsis purchased NBC Sports Washington and what that means for you watching the games at home.

The 2022/2023 NHL hockey season is fast approaching. There have been many head coaching changes made in the off-season. How do you think these coaches will do? Will the Philadelphia Flyers play better next season with John Tortorella. Will the unproven coach Martin St. Louis have good results in Montreal? Will Peter DeBoer finally have a team to call home for more than one season in Dallas? The coaching carousel has always fascinated me. How is that a coach is so bad that he gets fired on one team but is "the right man for the job" on another team? Chemistry? Zip Code? Roster? It's really hard to explain how a coach can do a poor job on one team and have great success on another.

In this edition of Locked on Capitals I do a player profile and review of TJ Oshie. A guy that plays much bigger than he is. That sometime leads to injury. His high hockey IQ and his ability to be a great player make him invaluable on the Washington Capitals.

Born in Mount Vernon, Washington, Oshie was raised in Everett, north of Seattle, and was on ice at age five in the Seattle Junior Hockey Association, where he played for ten years. Following his parents' amicable divorce, he lived in Stanwood with his mother Tina and attended Stanwood High School for his freshman year. In 2002, Oshie moved to Warroad, Minnesota, where his parents were originally from, and lived with his father, Tim, and his father's cousin.

On July 2, 2015, Oshie was traded by the Blues to the Washington Capitals in exchange for Troy Brouwer, Pheonix Copley and a third-round draft pick in 2016. Oshie wears number 77 for the Capitals, as his previous number 74 is currently worn by Capitals defenseman John Carlson.

In this episode of Locked on Capitals I talk about some of the biggest deals signed in the offseason. Not because of dollar amount exactly but the length of the contracts. Several of the players signed 8-year contracts. It can be a risky move as most of the players will experience some sort of decline. Were these contracts worth it? I guess only time will tell.

In this episode of Locked on Capitals I do a player review of Aliaksei Protas. Where does he fit into this Capitals lineup? In his brief stints on the Capitals he has played well, but is this season going to be his breakout season?

Protas is a 6’6”, 210 lb left-handed forward, drafted by the Washington Capitals in the third round (#91 overall) of the 2019 NHL Entry Draft. The 21-year-old Belarusian spent the last two seasons playing for Dinamo Minsk in the KHL and the Hershey Bears in the AHL. He also played for the Belarus national team last spring in the World Championship.

He seems to have what it takes to be an everyday NHL player. He just has to work and wait for his opportunity.

The Washington Capitals made some big moves this off season but how do they stack up against the other teams in the metro.

There was a lot of player movement in the Metro division this offseason as the eight teams looked to improve themselves for the coming season. Many players came and many players went both through signings and trades as the offseason kicked into full gear with the draft and the start of free agency now in the rear view.

Some time has passed since free agency opened and the entire division looks a bit different than it did just a few weeks ago. While there is still much work for everyone to do before training camps start and more player movement to come, the early stages of the offseason gave us a glimpse of how the teams stack up against one another.

In this episode of Locked on Capitals I do a player profile on Hendrix Lapierre. Picked in the first round 22nd overall in the 2020 draft. Lapierre talks about bulking up and being ready for his opportunity. He will most like play in AHL Hershey next year. That will be a big jump in career as he spent a majority of it in juniors. With this Capitals team look to get younger and faster I think Hendrix Lapierre's future is bright with the Caps.
