In this edition of Locked on Capitals Dan talks about the games over the weekend. The Capitals beat the Red Wings 2-0 with a goal from John Carlson and Lars Eller. The game also gave the Capitals their first look at Darcy Kuemper in a real game situation. Darcy Kuemper was spotless in the game's first half, stopping all nine shots he faced on the night.
The Capitals lost the second game of the weekend to the Columbus Blue Jackets 2-1. The Caps made a big push, but ultimately fell short in the 2-1 loss.
Sunday saw a round of cuts from the Caps team as Hershey opens camp on Monday. Washington sent Hendrix Lapierre and Vincent Iorio to Hershey while also placing Garrett Pilon, Bobby Nardella, Beck Malenstyn, Gabriel Carlsson, Dylan McIlrath and Zach Fucale on waivers.

In this edition of Locked on Capitals I'm joined by Luke James of the Hockey Writer's as we talk about the outlook for this year's Capitals team. We'll talk about Alex Ovechkin's goal chase and when will he pass Gordie Howe, and what will stand in his way from passing Wayne Gretzky. The Capitals added some needed pieces by signing Connor Brown for Tom Wilson and Dylan Strome for Nick Backstrom's absence. Where those players will fit into the lineup will ultimately be decided by how they perform in camp and in preseason games.
Later in the show we talk about the netminding situation and if Darcy Kuemper and Charlie Lindgren tandem will be enough to take this Capitals team over the top.
To close the show we'll talk about last summer's draft and the Capitals selections in Ivan Miroshnichenko and Ryan Chesley.

In this edition of Locked on Capitals Dan talks about Connor McMichael playing on the fourth line. Connor and Dylan Strome are battling for that position who will end up playing at second line center this year, I guess that remains to be seen. Dylan impressed Caps fans and Peter Laviolette by scoring two goals in his second preseason game. If the Capitals can get that kind of production from him all year, I think he has the second line center position on "Lock"

In this edition of Locked on Capitals Dan talks about the game Wednesday night as the Capitals defeat the Philadelphia by a score of 3-1. It was a game that saw goals from two of the Capitals biggest off season acquisitions. Connor Brown scored one goal and Dylan Strome scored two goals. It appears goo on ice chemistry between them.
“I thought they were good all night,” Coach Peter Laviolette said of the pair. “Their whole line [with Joe Snively] was really good. They worked, they got good skill, they complemented each other, and they brought a lot of speed. I thought Brownie did a good job at dogging pucks. … Stromer was around the puck all night. Really good.”
Goalie Charlie Lindgren had a great game and made 13 saves on 13 shots. A really great moment to help boost Lindgren's confidence.
“That was exactly how I would want my first game to go — getting the feel of the puck again, seeing game action — so I didn’t think my job was too hard tonight,” Lindgren said. “I thought our guys did an awesome job, obviously. It’s a good way to build a little bit of confidence.”

In this episode of Locked on Capitals Dan talks about the Capitals blue line and some new faces on the team.
The Capitals defense was pretty sound overall last year, but the Capitals have some big decisions to make in the off season.
Orlov, Jensen, Gustafsson and van Riemsdyk are all slated to hit free agency next summer. How many of those players will they retain and how many will move on to other teams? It will open up $9.35 mil in cap space leaving the Caps with some big questions to answer.
“Hopefully it’s motivational,” MacLellan said Thursday. “Guys are playing for next contracts, playing for jobs. Yeah, I think it’s a good thing.”
The Capitals have placed all their chips on the new goalie tandem of Darcy Kuemper and Charlie Lindgren. Will that tandem be enough for the Capitals to be contenders in the metro?
Darcy has spent considerable time on the injured list. What does that mean for this year's Capitals team?

In this Episode of Locked on Capitals Dan talks about Alex Ovechkin and his goal chase after Gordie Howe and the when Gretzky. Alex said that personal goals are nice, but ultimately he's got his eyes on a greater prize:
"I'm at the age that personal goals are nice, but we understand every year [you get closer] to the end of your career," the 37-year-old forward said. "So I just want to win. I want to be in the playoffs and fight for the Cup."
Alex then goes on to talk about how the Capitals will really need to step up in Nicklas Backstrom's absence:
"The most important thing is everybody has to be healthy, and we have to make the playoffs," Ovechkin said. "That first 20 games is very important so you have to [earn] points, so if you're going to have some ups and downs during the season you still have those points. … You don't want to play for only six months. You want to play for eight months and play for the Cup."
Later in the show Dan talks about the battle for the center position on the Capitals. Lars Eller is penciled in to be the third line center, but there are other young players on the team hungry to earn to battle for that and other positions. Most notable Connor McMichael and Hendrix Lapierre

In this edition of Locked on Capitals Dan talk about the Capitals loss to the Buffalo Sabres in the first preseason game of the year. These games aren't so much about winning and losing, but more about assessing talent. The Capitals got goals from Anthony Mantha, Conor Sheary and Joe Snively
The Capitals got a chance to take a look at the depth they have in net. The game was split by Zach Fucale and Hunter Shepard.
Connor McMichae is on a mission to prove that he belongs on this team, and ready to prove he's ready for a bigger role. Dylan Strome is who's penciled in for the second line center, but Connor is going to fight for that job.
The Capitals hope to get back into the win column when they take on the Philadelphia Flyers
