Locked On Capitals - Daily Podcast On The Washington Capitals

In this edition of Locked on Capitals Dan talks about Connor McMichael and where does he fit into this Capitals lineup? His belief is that if Connor doesn't see consistent playing time, that he would be better off in Hershey where he can get some regular playing time.

Later in the show Dan talks about Alex Ovechkin and his somewhat slow start to the season. What can we expect out of Alex this season? He's chasing Gordie Howe and Wayne Gretzky. How many goals will he score this year?

In the last segment Dan talks about the Capitals defense. John Carlson is the only Capitals defenseman under contract after next year. Dimitry Orlov is a dynamic two way defenseman. Where does he fit into the Capitals future?

In this edition of Locked on Capitals Dan talk about the Caps loss to the Sens. The Caps will need to spend more time playing 5 on 5 hockey if they want to win games.

"We shot ourselves in the foot too many times with the puck," laments Caps coach Peter Laviolettte. "In the first period, we did exactly what we wanted to do. We put the puck north, we put it behind them, we're in the offensive zone, we're putting pucks to the net. In the second period and the third period, we played east-west hockey and didn't deliver any pucks. It's not good enough."

Despite the loss there were some bright spots as well. The Caps power play played very well. On an early 5-on-3 chance, T.J. Oshie struck for his second of the season on a nice pass from Marcus Johansson. Oshie has four points in five games to open the campaign, while Johansson now has four points in as many games. John Carlson also got his second assist of the season.

Darcy Kuemper played well despite the loss. He made timely saves and some high danger save that could have seen the Sens score far more goals Darcy made 39 saves on 42 shots

In this edition of Locked on Capitals Dan talks about the defensive pairings that have gone unchanged since the start of the season. Dmitry Orlov moved up to the first pairing with John Carlson, while Martin Fehervary shifted down to play with Nick Jensen. The Erik Gustafsson-Trevor van Riemsdyk pairing stayed the same.

The Capitals also made some changes to the forward lines. Lars Eller moved up to the first line to play between Alex Ovechkin and Conor Sheary. Aliaksei Protas moved back up to the top 6, working on the second line with Dylan Strome and T.J. Oshie.

The Capitals will also get an opportunity to see Joe Snively and Connor McMichael because of the injury to Connor Brown and the suspension to Evgeny Kuznetsov. The Caps also called up Beck Malenstyn as insurance. If Malenstyn has any ice time it would add a physical aspect to the game that's been missing since Tom Wilson's absence.

In this edition of Locked on Capitals Dan talks about Center Evgeny Kuznetsov suspension for one game for high-sticking Canucks defenseman Kyle Burroughs.

Kuznetsov’s suspension is the first of his 10-year NHL career for an on-ice transgression. In 2019, he was suspended three games for conduct detrimental to the league.

What are the implications of this on the Caps?

Later Dan talks about the lower body injury to Connor Brown who was absent from practice after suffering an apparent right leg injury in the third period.

Brown tangled with Canucks defenseman Noah Juulsen when he went down and collided with the boards in front of the visitors’ bench. He grabbed his right knee briefly, then limped straight down the tunnel to the room.

Will this present an opportunity for Joe Snively or Connor McMichael to impress?

In the final segment we talk about Alex Ovechkin's four point night

Ovechkin had a flurry of offense scoring four points while Conor Sheary, Dylan Strome and more also helped Washington to a 6-4 victory over the Vancouver Canucks.

“I think we were kind of pissed with what happened in the second, and it was a great response by everybody,” Ovechkin said. “You can see when we play the right way, it doesn’t matter what kind of score. We can always bounce back and win the game.”

In this edition of Locked on Capitals Dan talks about the player of the game award a giant coiled rope that holds a heavy meaning for the club. “It’s how important every member of the team their hands on the rope. It’s hard to win a day, it’s hard to win a game, it’s hard to win in your division, it’s hard to qualify for the playoffs, it’s hard to win a Stanley Cup,” head coach Peter Laviolette explained. “Just how important everybody’s hands are on the rope.”

Later in the show Dan talks about the depth signing of Sonny Milano. Washington has signed Milano to a one-year, one-way contract worth $750,000. He has been placed on waivers for the purpose of a loan to the Bears. If he clears, he will go to the Bears on Monday.

In the last segment Dan talk about the Athletic article that talks about Alex Ovechkin's goal chase, and the aging Caps roster

In this edition of Locked on Capitals Dan talks about the game tonight. The Washington Capitals defeated Canadiens by a score of 3-1. It was a game that saw the lines mixed up a bit. Evgeny Kuznetsov moved down to the second line center position and Dylan Strome moved to the top line center position.

Alex Ovechkin scored a goal but then was overturned because Aliaksei Protas was offsides

All of Washington's offense came in a span of just over six minutes in the second period, erasing a 1-0 Habs lead and making a winner of Darcy Kuemper, who earned his first win as a Capital with a 21-save effort.

In this edition of Locked on Capitals Dan talks about the Capitals loss to the Maple Leafs Thursday night. It wasn't all negative though as the Capitals 4th line showed some great production. Charlie Lindgren played well despite the loss. Charlie made 36 saves on 39 shots. The Capitals need to work on their special teams Washington's power play went 0 for 5 tonight and is 0 for 9 to start the season. PK has given up two goals in as many games. The Capitals were once again shut out on special teams as they failed to convert on any of their five chances in Toronto including one that last for the final 44 seconds of the game.
