Brian Maclellan really swung for the fences on free agency by signing Darcy Kuemper. But Mac wasn't done yet, he also signed Darcy's backup Charlie Lindgren.

The Washington Capitals have signed goaltender Charlie Lindgren to a three-year, $3.3 million contract, senior vice president and general manager Brian MacLellan announced today. Lindgren contract will carry an average annual value of $1.1 million.

Lindgren, 28, posted a 5-0-0 record with a 1.22 goals-against average and a .958 save percentage in five games with the St. Louis Blues in 2021-22. Lindgren, who made his Blues debut on Dec. 7, 2021, became the first goaltender in franchise history to earn wins in each of his first five appearances. The 6'2", 179-pound goaltender also appeared in 34 games with the Springfield Thunderbirds of the American Hockey League (AHL), where he went 24-7-1 with three shutouts, a 2.21 goals-against average, a .925 save percentage. Lindgren ranked third in the AHL in goals-against average, second in save percentage and tied for fourth in wins last season.

In this episode I recap Dylan Strome and Connor Brown's media availability with the Capitals press core. Connor Brown is slated to play on the top line right wing in Tom Wilson's absence. Brown, who has played seven NHL seasons for the Leafs and Senators, scored 10 goals with 29 assists in 64 games played last season. He’s posted a career-best 21 goals, which he did in the 2020-21 season with Ottawa. 

I also talk about Dylan Strome and his media availability today. Both Brown and Strome know each other and are excited to be playing together. They had this to say: "“I remember my first game in junior, I didn’t really know what to expect,” said Strome of a loaded Erie team that also featured Connor McDavid and Andre Burakovsky. “I was really young and just finding my way. We lost the first game of the season in overtime. (Brown) came off the ice and was upset and frustrated that we lost. He’s a great leader. He was the captain of our team then and he’s a great hockey player.”

“Just everything about their team,” Strome said, asked why he picked the Caps over other suitors. “The way they play, their style of game, it fits my game really good, and obviously there are some great wingers to play with, as well.”

The Washington Capitals had a need at second line center with Nick Backstrom recovering from a hip resurfacing procedure that was done. The outlook from that procedure is not too good. Many players never returned after having that done, or if they did it was only for a short period of time

On the second day of free agency Capitals GM Brian Maclellan signed Dylan Strome to a one a year deal worth $3.5 million dollars. That fits perfectly into the Capitals plans as Nick Backstrom is due to miss a substantial amount of time.

Dylan has faced some great adversity in his hockey career. He played with elite company in his early days in the OHL playing with Connor McDavid and MItch Marner.

The start of his Career with the Coyotes was a shaky one at best, but really found his home on the Chicago Blackhawks. He did experience some time in and out of the lineup, but all in all was a very productive member of the Blackhawks team. Dylan is coming off a strong year with the Chicago Blackhawks that saw him dish 22 goals and 26 assists in 69 games.

Brian Maclellan and the Washington Capitals were busy in day one of free agency. Brian Maclellan addressed the holes in the lineup with truly top tier players

The Capitals had issues with consistency in net last season with Vitek Vanecek and Ilya Samsonov. Vitek was traded to the Devils in return for draft picks. One of those picks was Ryan Chesley. A really great defenseman to have in the pipeline. Ilya signed a one year deal with the Maples. Now that Mac cleared out any evidence of a truly poor goalie tandem, he signed the biggest name free agent goalie, Stanley Cup winner Darcey Kemper. Mac wasn't done yet as he signed Charlie Lindgren as Darcy's backup.

Mac then signed Dylan Strome to fill the spot of Nick Backstrom at second line center. Mac wasn't done yet as he signed forward Connor Brown to fill top line right wing Tom Wilson.

Mac then addressed issues on defense signing Erik Gustafsson, to a one-year, $800,000 contract on Wednesday, is expected to step into Schultz’s spot on the third pair.

Brian Maclellan had a productive second day off free agency as he signs Dylan Strome to address the situation at second line center. Strome is coming off a strong year with the Chicago Blackhawks that saw him dish 22 goals and 26 assists in 69 games. Back in 2018-19, the 25-year-old had a 51-point season, followed by a 38-point seaon in 58 games in the COVID 19 shortened 2019-20 season

In the second segment I talk about the changes in net with Carl as we reflect on a great free agency with Brian Maclellan. Mac swung for the fences and landed the biggest goalie in free agency Darcy Kuemper. The Capitals also solidified the backup goalie situation by signing Charlie Lindgren. Charlie doesn't have a lot of NHL experience, but in his brief stint in the NHL has played very well and also performed at a high level in the AHL

In the final segment I talk about the future of the Washington Capitals. The Caps selections in this years draft and what to expect from this team in the fall.

In this edition of Locked on Capitals I'm joined by Ben Raby of Caps radio and the Caps This Morning podcast. The Capitals GM Brian Maclellan said he was going to fix the problems in net and he did that today. We talk about the Washington Capitals signing Darcy Kuemper and what it means to this team. Mac also signed goalie Charlie Lindgren to a deal to be Darcy Kuemper's backup. We also talk about the other new Capitals acquisitions and where they fit into this lineup. The Capitals signed right wing Connor Brown. Right wing Tom Wilson will miss the first few months of the season, so it appears as they Capitals were trying to plug the hole in the lineup there.

In other moves the Capitals gave Marcus Johansson, Matt Irwin, and Eric Gustafsson new deal.

NHL free agency is tomorrow, and Capitals have some big question to ask and some positions that need to be filled. In this episode I'm joined by: Michael Marzzacco of Stars and Sticks, Corey Swartz of Bears Hockey Nation and Hockey Troll of the Caps Chirp podcast as we talk about what positions need to get filled on the Washington Capitals. The Washington Capitals in a somewhat unexpected move didn't extend a qualifying off the Ilya Samsonov. This move came after the Capitals traded Vitek Vanecek to the New Jersey Devils last Friday. As it stands right now Capitals don't have an NHL ready netminder on the roster. This signals the change for the Capitals in net.

The free agency deadline is Wednesday July 13th, and the Capitals look to make some big moves in the net minding department. There's getting to be more and more talk of Darcy Kuemper coming to the Washington Capitals. The part that worries me is that Evolving-Hockey pegs Kuemper’s next deal at six years and $6.3 million per season. I'm not crazy about the term or the price but that's what you have to do to get an "elite level" goalie.

In this episode Dan Holmi gives you his draft reaction. Did the Capitals select the right player in the first round by selecting Ivan Miroshnichenko? He has a great offensive upside, but he has health issues, and his defense could be a liability.

The Washington Capitals have a lot of questions to answer before Wednesday. The biggest question is who is their number one netminder going to be? The Capitals traded Vitek Vanecek to the New Jersey Devils and now they only have Ilya Samsonov on the team. The Capitals will need to swing for the fences and go after that marquee netminder. Rumors are swirling that Darcy Kuemper will be the next netminder. The Capitals have shown interest in Jake Allen and John Gibson. That Capitals don't have a lot of time to make to pull the trigger on the next number one netminder.

The Capitals were busy on day two of the draft. The biggest and best selection was defenseman Ryan Chesley. He is poised to be the next big-name defender on the Capitals in years to come. All in all, a great draft for this Washington Capitals team that looking to get younger and faster

The Washington Capitals make their pick at number 20 in the first round and select Ivan Miroshnichenko.

Miroshnichenko was recently diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma. The good news is that the curable around 88%, depending on the extent of the spread.

The Capitals did their due diligence on Miroshnichenko. Head athletic trainer Jason Serbus reviewed his medical records and the team interviewed him yesterday in Montreal.

Miro has some things in common with Alex Ovechkin. Both play left wing and both like to score from the left circle. Miro like to score the dirty goals from in front of the net too. Is he Alex Ovechkin 2.0?

Miro is more of a sniper than a playmaker, he's a great passer

His skating might be his most underrated tool. He is a dynamic skater with a powerful and agile stride. He can change directions quickly, forcing defenders into snap decisions that can lead to drawn penalties.
