Houston Cougars basketball fans question the lack of marquee home games as Kelvin Sampson’s squad shifts toward big-money, neutral-site showdowns. Can the financial benefits of events like the Players ERA Invitational in Las Vegas and the Madison Square Garden battle with Alabama offset fans’ desire for the electric Fertitta Center atmosphere?

The conversation focused on shifting college basketball trends—why top programs like Houston, Kansas, and Duke increasingly prioritize TV dollars and NIL opportunities over traditional home-and-home rivalries. A key theme that emerged was the Big 12’s push for a 20-game conference schedule and its potential impact on player health, program revenue, and broadcast quality. The discussion explored the pitfalls of private equity in college sports, with Utah’s controversial deal sparking debate about the future of athletic department funding. Would Houston ever consider a similar move, or will the Cougars stick to more sustainable strategies in the NIL era?
