The Miami Dolphins are coming out of their preseason opener with two very different stories.
The first-team offense looked sharp against Washington, driving 93 yards in 14 plays for a touchdown behind Malik Willis, De’Von Achane and an impressive performance from Miami’s starting offensive line. But after the starters left, the Dolphins struggled badly — raising serious questions about quarterback depth, offensive-line depth and which players can actually be trusted behind the first unit.
Jim “GRIES” Grieshaber is joined by Locked On Dolphins host and ultimate Dolphins insider Kyle Crabbs and former Miami Dolphins defensive lineman Jeff “Z” Zgonina to break down everything Miami has learned since Friday night.
Malik Willis continues to build momentum. Caleb Douglas and Malik Washington continue to emerge. Jonah Savaiinaea’s physicality has drawn praise. Quinn Ewers is now week-to-week with a groin injury, making Miami’s backup quarterback situation even more important.
On defense, Chop Robinson continues to wreck practices, Zeek Biggers is becoming one of Miami’s most consistent young defensive linemen, Chris Johnson is coming off one of his strongest practices of camp, and Trey Moore’s versatility is giving Jeff Hafley options all over the front seven.
Plus, Chris Bell is finally back on the practice field, Kevin Coleman Jr. is flashing, and Miami’s young receiver room is suddenly becoming one of the most intriguing position groups on the roster.
Then the Squad looks ahead to Thursday’s joint practice with the New York Giants and Saturday’s preseason matchup: What does Malik Willis need to prove next? Can the starting offensive line stack another strong performance? Who emerges at backup quarterback? And which young Dolphins are running out of time to win roster spots?
It’s another loaded edition of the Dolphins Squad Show.

The Miami Dolphins opened their preseason matchup against the Washington Commanders looking like a completely different football team.
Malik Willis commanded a brilliant 14-play, 93-yard touchdown drive, De’Von Achane powered the ground game, Caleb Douglas continued his breakout summer with another spectacular catch, Malik Washington remained reliable, and Miami’s starting offensive line delivered perhaps its most encouraging performance of camp.
Then the starters came out.
Washington outscored Miami 20-0 after the Dolphins’ opening touchdown, exposing major questions about Miami’s roster depth.
Quinn Ewers struggled badly, finishing 1-of-8 for 27 yards with an interception, while Cam Miller threw two more interceptions as Miami’s backup quarterbacks combined for three turnovers.
The Dolphins also battled dropped passes, holding penalties, a personal foul that drew an immediate reaction from Jeff Hafley, inconsistent offensive-line depth and questions about where reliable reinforcements will come from behind the starters.
Jim “GRIES” Grieshaber, Kyle Crabbs and former NFL defensive lineman Jeff Zgonina break down the Dolphins’ 20-7 preseason loss, including Malik Willis’ strong performance, Caleb Douglas’ continued emergence, the offensive line, Ollie Gordon’s response after being challenged by Hafley, Miami’s pass rush, roster battles and the growing concern at backup quarterback.
Plus, GRIES gives his Player of the Game, X-Factor, Who Fudged Up and Second Guess of the night.
