Locked On Falcons - Daily Podcast On The Atlanta Falcons

The Atlanta Falcons shored up their depth on the third day of the 2023 NFL Draft, but may have landed one of the draft's biggest steals in Utah cornerback Clark Phillips in the fourth round. Host Aaron Freeman breaks down why so many people expected Phillips to get picked two rounds earlier and how his playmaking skills and instincts could instantly upgrade the team's secondary.

Later, he discusses the team's two seventh round selections in Alabama safety DeMarcco Hellams and South Carolina guard Jovaughn Gwyn. Finally, he breaks down the two biggest lessons he's learned about the Falcons with this year's draft class, including their belief in drafting the "best player available" and their ability to solve problems and move on from past mistakes.

The Atlanta Falcons shored up their trenches on the second day of the 2023 NFL Draft by selecting Syracuse tackle Matthew Bergeron and Ohio State defensive end Zach Harrison in the second and third rounds, respectively. Host Aaron Freeman breaks down why he's optimistic about Bergeron's potential to transition to left guard and why it should work out much better than their last attempt in 2021 third-round blocker Jalen Mayfield. Then, he breaks down Harrison's size, length, and tools to develop as the heir apparent behind veteran defensive lineman Calais Campbell.

Later, he looks at the Falcons potential options on Day 3 of the 2023 NFL Draft and whether or not they will continue to shore up their defense or add a playmaking wide receiver in the fourth round.

The Atlanta Falcons cut veteran cornerback Casey Hayward Jr. over the weekend and it leads to questions about their plans at the cornerback position, especially with the 2023 NFL Draft looming in a few days. Host Aaron Freeman breaks down why the Hayward release was somewhat expected even if the timing wasn’t, and why the Falcons should have faith in ex-Detroit Lions corner Jeff Okudah to fill Hayward’s shoes opposite A.J. Terrell. He breaks down whether or not the Falcons have enough competent depth at outside cornerback, or if they’ll be in the market to upgrade at the nickel spot in the draft or via free agency later this offseason.

Later, he discusses several draft prospects from the Senior and Shrine Bowls that could be on the Falcons radar including Darius Rush (South Carolina), Darrell Luter Jr. (South Alabama), Cam Smith (South Carolina), and Kei’Trel Clark (Louisville). He breaks down the coaching connection between the Falcons and the staffs at South Carolina and Illinois that could lead to them targeting one of several defensive backs available in the draft.

Finally, Saivion Mixon (@aroundtheblock876) joins to discuss some potential safeties, including Sydney Brown (Illinois) that could be options for the Falcons. He also discusses why the versatility of Jammie Robinson (Florida State) and Marte Mapu (Sacramento State) make them attractive to the Falcons.

Host Aaron Freeman projects which players they will take to fill those needs in all seven rounds of this year's draft. He breaks down which players will be the first seven off the board and who the Falcons will be choosing from come Thursday night. He breaks down why their choice will likely come down to Jalen Carter (Georgia), Peter Skoronski (Northwestern) or Nolan Smith (Georgia) and why he thinks Smith will ultimately be the pick. Later, he discusses current New England Patriots pass-rusher Josh Uche as a successful archetype for what sort of career path Smith could follow.
