Locked On Falcons - Daily Podcast On The Atlanta Falcons

The Atlanta Falcons found their next No. 1 wide receiver with 2022 first-round selection Drake London, as he follows in the footsteps of Roddy White and Julio Jones. Host Aaron Freeman breaks down the promise displayed by London during his rookie season and why the rapport he showed with quarterback Desmond Ridder over the final four games could be key to the latter's improvement as the full-time starter.

Later, he discusses how the Falcons still have unanswered questions elsewhere at wide receiver, and whether Mack Hollins and Scotty Miller can be those answers. He discusses what both bring to the table in the Falcons' passing attack, and then breaks down why he still thinks the team is going to be patient and wait to see if Corey Davis becomes available.

The Atlanta Falcons need to learn more about quarterback Desmond Ridder in 2023, with one big potential lesson coming in the form of how the young passer performs against man coverage. Ridder's initial four starts weren't particularly promising in that arena, and if it continues to be a problem, one solution may be to ask him to run more.

Host Aaron Freeman breaks down how defenses that deploy man coverage struggle against running quarterbacks. The concern with increasing Ridder's carries might be increasing the potential of injury, and Aaron also discusses why getting a full year to evaluate Ridder is an integral part of the team's rebuild.

The Atlanta Falcons believe in second-year quarterback Desmond Ridder can develop into a very effective starter in the NFL, but what is that belief based upon? Guest Matt Waldman (@MattWaldmanRSPFilmRoom) joins host Aaron Freeman to share his thoughts on Ridder, and why he wasn’t as high on him coming out of Cincinnati as others were. They discuss how Ridder needs to improve his processing and understanding when it comes to reading the defender’s leverage, especially when he’s facing man coverage. Matt discusses the athletic tools and what Ridder’s potential super power could be if he develops into a high-level starter. They also break down how many games it’ll take to properly evaluate Ridder as a young quarterback, and the time it takes before NFL defenses and defensive coordinators make the adjustments to limit young passers.

The Atlanta Falcons made more than a dozen roster moves earlier this week to try and shore up depth at some key areas of need. Host Aaron Freeman breaks down which of the players the team signed including offensive tackle Barry Wesley, quarterback Austin Aune, and linebacker Andre Smith have the best odds of now making the team’s 53-man roster later this summer. He breaks down where the team is at with their swing tackle depth and why recently released Germain Ifedi was never an option.

Later, he’s joined by Brad Spielberger (@ProFootballFocus) to discuss the Falcons 2023 draft class, and is schooled on what the “positional value” conversation involves when it comes to selecting running backs and guards high in the draft as the Falcons did with Bijan Robinson and Matthew Bergeron. Brad also breaks down why he thinks free-agent cornerback Marcus Peters makes a ton of sense in Atlanta, and why he expects A.J. Terrell could become the highest-paid corner on the market next offseason.

The Atlanta Falcons spurn conventional notions of positional value with the selections of running back Bijan Robinson and guard Matthew Bergeron with their first two picks of the 2023 NFL Draft. Guest Trevor Sikkema (@NFLStockExchange) tells host Aaron Freeman why that can work in the Falcons' favor due to Robinson's "Christian McCaffrey-like" skillset as an offensive weapon and Bergeron's proven toughness. He also discusses areas where defensive end Zach Harrison and cornerback Clark Phillips need to improve to impact the Falcons. Finally, he discusses the team's playoff potential in 2023 and beyond.

Later, J.T. Wistrcill (@LockedOnUtes) joins to discuss what motivated Phillips to enroll at Utah, blossom into their best defensive player, and where that trajectory will carry him in the pros.

The Atlanta Falcons have the potential to get the most out of Bijan Robinson as a dual-threat running back and receiver, but it may not happen overnight. Host Aaron Freeman breaks down why Robinson's potential as a game-changing receiver might not manifest immediately in 2023 and why patience may be needed. He compares Robinson's potential timeline to that of Cordarrelle Patterson, Drake London, and Kyle Pitts. Later, he takes a second look over whether head coach Arthur Smith deserves more credit for unlocking Patterson's skillset in 2021.

The Atlanta Falcons statistically have the softest schedule in the NFL heading into the 2023 season based on last season's record. It sets them up for success and to finish above .500 for the first time since 2017 and make a triumphant return to the postseason. But things won't be easy, and the Falcons will have to take care of business come the regular season. Host Aaron Freeman breaks down each game, some key matchups, where the schedule is softest and hardest, and other potential issues. He breaks down the lack of prime time games, the potential for Saturday games, and whether or not the schedule sets up for the Falcons to take an early lead in the NFC South playoff race before projecting what he thinks their record should be.

The Atlanta Falcons are getting a healthy amount of hype thanks to their very active offseason, however, their decisions aren’t without controversy. Host Aaron Freeman is joined by Everett Glaze (The Falcoholic) to discuss whether they’re buying or selling the hype on some of those choices. They break down if Desmond Ridder is the right choice at quarterback for the present and future, if rookie running back Bijan Robinson will transform the entire Falcons offense, and if the team’s defense will make the leap to respectability in the upper half of the NFL. They discuss specific moves like the signing of linebacker Kaden Elliss and if cornerback Jeff Okudah is a worthwhile reclamation project.

Later in the episode, Jay Stephens (@LockedOnBuckeyes) joins to discuss former Ohio State defensive end Zach Harrison and whether or not he lived up to the hype following in the footsteps of Nick Bosa and Chase Young in Columbus. He also expresses whether or not he thinks Okudah is going to have a bounce-back year in Atlanta.
