Locked On Falcons - Daily Podcast On The Atlanta Falcons

The Atlanta Falcons' selection of Utah cornerback Clark Phillips in the fourth round of the 2023 NFL Draft made sense as the team looks to revamp and retool their secondary with new defensive coordinator Ryan Nielsen coming aboard. However, Phillips' potential to excel in a zone scheme might hurt him as the Falcons appear to be moving towards more man coverage. Host Aaron Freeman breaks down Phillips' fit from watching the film, where he succeeds and where he may come up short in the Falcons new scheme. He then makes NFL player comparisons including a couple former Falcons like Christopher Owens, Brian Poole, and Pro Bowl cornerback Kenny Moore.

The Atlanta Falcons are looking to be more explosive on offense in 2023. Yet, host Aaron Freeman points out some of the shortcomings of Arthur Smith's play-calling in generating such plays but also why he can improve in that capacity.

Then, he discusses if Bijan Robinson can add comparable ability after contact as Derrick Henry did for Smith's old Titans offenses. Later, he discusses Kyle Pitts' ability to stretch defenses, Jonnu Smith's ability after the catch, and if Drake London can be reminiscent of A.J. Brown.

The Atlanta Falcons were a methodical offense during Desmond Ridder's four inaugural starts in 2022. While they attempt to become more explosive, being methodical means they must find ways to convert in the red zone. Host Aaron Freeman breaks down what he saw on the film that led to some of their red-zone issues under Ridder and ways they can improve. He also breaks down whether or not the additions of Bijan Robinson, Jonnu Smith, and Mack Hollins will help the team improve in the red zone this year. He also discusses whether or not this year will be the time when we finally get to see Kyle Pitts be a featured option in the red zone.

The Atlanta Falcons hope to get a boost to their pass rush and defensive line with third-round selection Zach Harrison. Host Aaron Freeman breaks down what he saw from Harrison's film at Ohio State, including how he won as a pass-rusher and whether or not his run defense was up to par. Then, he breaks down how Harrison fits into the Falcons defensive line front alongside Calais Campbell and whether or not he's destined to take over the "Cam Jordan role" in the future. Later, Aaron makes NFL player comparisons to Malliciah Goodman, Charles Omenihu, Tanoh Kpassagnon, and Emmanuel Ogbah to project Harrison's future in the pros.

The Atlanta Falcons aren't expected to make any major roster moves after June 1st, but if they were, one player that could be on the chopping block would be running back Cordarrelle Patterson. However, host Aaron Freeman explains why Patterson won't be going anywhere thanks to him still providing a lot of value for the Falcons on both offense and special teams.

Then, he discusses the possibility that the Las Vegas Raiders will trade wide receiver Hunter Renfrow after June 1, and whether the Falcons should be interested.

Later, he discusses the Falcons' depth concerns at offensive tackle and how they could look at the Miami Dolphins roster for potential solutions. He discusses how their addition of free agent tackle Isaiah Wynn could lead to the Dolphins parting ways with one of many experience backups in Liam Eichenberg, Austin Jackson, Geron Christian, Cedric Ogbuehi, or Kendall Lamm.

The Atlanta Falcons have been mentioned as a potential destination for recently released Arizona Cardinals wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins since March. However, host Aaron Freeman explains why it's better for the world if Hopkins avoids Atlanta and heads to an AFC contender. He breaks down why the Falcons could benefit from Hopkins, but why age and money make it unlikely he'll choose the Falcons now that he's a free agent.

Then, Aaron breaks down why current New York Jets wideout Corey Davis makes more sense as a Falcons acquisition and why the Jets' rumored interest in Hopkins only continues speculation that Davis' days in New York are done.

Later, he is joined by Andrew Lyon (@LockedOnGamecocks) to break down Falcons' seventh-round selection in South Carolina guard-center Jovaughn Gwyn.

The Atlanta Falcons may have gotten one of the sleepers of the offseason by signing ex-New Orleans Saints linebacker Kaden Elliss. Host Aaron Freeman breaks down the floor and ceilings for Elliss' potential sack production in 2023, looking back at his production last year as well as that of former teammate Demario Davis. He posits that Elliss' could easily reach double-digit sack if things break a certain way.

One way the Falcons can maximize Elliss' potential is by dialing up their stunts and twists under new defensive coordinator Ryan Nielsen. Aaron breaks down why that could not only benefit Elliss, but other Falcons like Grady Jarrett.

Later, he is joined by Jimmy Stein (@LockedOnBama) to break down former Alabama and Falcons seventh-round pick safety DeMarcco Hellams.

The Atlanta Falcons might have nailed it when they selected Syracuse offensive tackle Matthew Bergeron in the second round of the 2023 NFL Draft with the intention of converting him to left guard. Bergeron has the ideal blend of athleticism and toughness to fit well in Atlanta's run-heavy offensive scheme, but will have to adjust to playing inside for the first time in his career. There are potential pitfalls that come with said adjustment, and host Aaron Freeman breaks down what he thinks those will be.

Later in the episode, he compares Bergeron to several NFL pros including former Falcons left guards Elijah Wilkinson and Justin Blalock, along with All-Pros Rodgers Saffold and Joel Bitonio to project what Bergeron has the potential to become in the NFL.

The Atlanta Falcons are considered to be an up-and-coming team, but do those expectations extend to their young quarterback in Desmond Ridder? Host Aaron Freeman discusses what his expectations are for Ridder in his first year as a starter, and where his potential ceiling is. He discusses what areas he expects the team to improve that will reflect Ridder's ability to manage the offense. Later, he answers listener questions on Ridder and his tendency to start slow. He also breaks down the team's concerns at the linebacker position and if his optimism over the Falcons indicates the team will be more successful than many national pundits expect.

The Atlanta Falcons hope to get more mileage out of tight end Kyle Pitts in 2023 than they did in 2022. However, concerns over Pitts' previous year have been greatly exaggerated. Host Aaron Freeman breaks down why Pitts' ability to get on the same page with quarterback Desmond Ridder, especially on down-field throws and in the red zone will be critical to the team's offensive success moving forward. He also explains why only a handful of accurate throws from Marcus Mariota a year ago would have dramatically shifted the narrative about Pitts having a down year.

Later, he breaks down how Parker Hesse and Jonnu Smith's versatility in multiple tight-end sets will be integral to Arthur Smith's designs to playing "positionless" football this season.
