Locked On Falcons - Daily Podcast On The Atlanta Falcons

The Atlanta Falcons selected South Carolina guard Jovaughn Gwyn in the seventh round of the 2023 NFL Draft with the intention of transitioning him to center in the pros. That should give Gwyn his best chances to find success as either a backup or potential starter in the NFL. Host Aaron Freeman breaks down what he liked and disliked about Gwyn's college tape and how it translates to the pros.

Later, he makes player comparisons to current and former NFL players to see if Gwyn is a viable Plan B at center should current starter Drew Dalman not work out long-term.

The Atlanta Falcons are building a "cold-weather team" in a warm-weather environment thanks to the hard-nosed identity on both offense and defense. Host Aaron Freeman is joined by John and Mike (@outtayourfalconmind) to discuss why they're excited about this year's Falcons squad especially with the defensive additions made this offseason. They discuss Grady Jarrett's influence on the team and how he embodies their newfound mindset.

Then, they break down what are some of their lingering concerns about the team heading into the season. They share concerns about a potential quarterback controversy and whether or not center Drew Dalman will take the necessary step this year to solidify the team's offensive line.

Later, they discuss the potential training camp battles at nickel cornerback and left guard and why the discussion of the running back position is overblown. They also discuss the players with the greatest upside on the roster.

Could the Atlanta Falcons trade for Minnesota Vikings defensive end Danielle Hunter? Host Aaron Freeman breaks down the possibility and why the Falcons adding a player like Hunter could take their pass rush to new heights. He breaks down the stats that show Hunter has been one of the league's best pass-rushers over the past five years, and how the Falcons lack a pass-rusher of that caliber already on their roster despite their offseason investments.

Later, he discusses why he thinks a Hunter trade is unlikely due to the Falcons being unwilling to pay the premium for Hunter and give him more money than what they've paid players like Grady Jarrett and Jessie Bates.

Finally, he discusses the Falcons' three latest roster additions: defensive tackle Albert Huggins, wide receiver Chris Blair, and kicker Matthew Trickett before Aaron discusses how he became a Falcon fan.

The Atlanta Falcons selected Alabama safety DeMarcco Hellams in the seventh round of the 2023 NFL Draft and found a potential enforcer for their defense. Host Aaron Freeman breaks down what he saw on film from Hellams, and how his physical style of play fits in the Falcons defense. He breaks down how NFL defenses are moving away from having a “strict” box safety that was popular for much of the past decade (embodied in former Falcon Keanu Neal) and if Hellams has what it takes to become a more well-rounded safety in coverage. Later, he makes comparisons to current and former NFL players to project where Hellams’ potential lies in Atlanta

The Atlanta Falcons hit a home run in 2020 first-round cornerback A.J. Terrell, who is poised for a big payday after the 2023 season. Host Aaron Freeman revisits all four of the Falcons’ remaining 2020 draft class to talk about what’s at stake for each entering this year. He explains how and why Terrell is on the verge of being the NFL’s highest-paid cornerback and whether his production will merit it. He compares Terrell to Darius Slay as he did immediately after the 2020 draft and discusses if the new faces in the Falcons secondary will help or hurt Terrell on his path to being CB1.

Later, he discusses center Matt Hennessy’s potential to steal the starting left guard spot away from the 2023 second-rounder Matt Bergeron, and if that’ll help Hennessy earn a lucrative second contract in the NFL.

Finally, he breaks down 2020 fourth-round picks in linebacker Mykal Walker and safety Jaylinn Hawkins. While Walker hasn’t quite proven himself a capable starter, he’s an ideal backup, which may or may not be enough to keep him around Atlanta. Then, he discusses how Hawkins may have the best chance to stick around beyond this year if he can prove to be invaluable as a dime safety this year.

The Atlanta Falcons kick off mandatory minicamp with nearly complete participation from their players with one notable exception: Kyle Pitts. The third-year tight end is still working his way back from a torn MCL suffered last November. Host Aaron Freeman explains why he’s not pressed about that Pitts still being out seven months after what is normally a two or three-month injury. He also breaks down the latest in the recoveries of nose tackle Eddie Goldman and running back Caleb Huntley, and why the later may be destined for a “redshirt” year on the PUP list.

He also breaks down Ta’Quon Graham’s (ACL) triumphant return to practice and what his role will be this year as part of the defensive line rotation. Later, he also breaks down whether Pitts, wide receiver Drake London, or running back Bijan Robinson will be the “alpha” on offense. And also discusses whether or not the Falcons offense or defense has greater potential to be a Top 10 unit this year.

The Atlanta Falcons hope their offseason additions beefed up their pass rush, but they will also expect it to be enhanced by the schematic changes of new defensive coordinator Ryan Nielsen. Host Aaron Freeman breaks down why scheme isn't as important to the defense, but how play-calling thanks to blitzes and simulated pressures does help. He defines "sims" and "creepers" and how Nielsen will differ in their usage from his predecessor, Dean Pees.

Atlanta Falcons will undergo some changes defensively under new defensive coordinator Ryan Nielsen. It remains to be seen what exactly those changes are but based on Nielsen's statements and history coaching the New Orleans Saints, host Aaron Freeman makes some educated guesses. But first to understand where the Falcons are going regarding their defense, one must understand where they've been. So Aaron breaks down the hallmarks of the Dan Quinn, Raheem Morris, and Dean Pees-led defenses in recent years, including their hybrid fronts and preferred coverage shells. Then, he breaks down what fronts and coverage shells Nielsen's defense is likely to feature more or less than his predecessors.

Later, Aaron answers listener questions including which miracle is more likely: Feleipe Franks scoring a touchdown or Jalen Mayfield becoming a decent starting tackle in the NFL. He also discusses the possibility of Bijan Robinson returning punts and then looks at the potential for the Falcons to pursue Cleveland Browns wide receiver Amari Cooper in the future.

The Atlanta Falcons have another hole to fill at punt returner thanks to the season-ending ACL injury of Avery Williams. Host Aaron Freeman breaks down the value Williams brought on both offense and special teams, and how his absence will open up opportunities for other running backs, wide receivers, and cornerbacks to carve out new roles on special teams this summer. He breaks down whether players like Mike Hughes, Dee Alford, Penny Hart, or Josh Ali are expected to fill Williams' shoes as a punt returner.

Later, he also discusses Jalen Mayfield's potential move back to right tackle and whether that helps or hurts his chances at sticking on the roster this year. And he also breaks down the addition of defensive tackle Carlos Davis and how he gives the team some needed insurance behind nose tackle Eddie Goldman.

The Atlanta Falcons are entering an exciting new era of football led by new quarterback Desmond Ridder along with a new-look defense under first-time defensive coordinator Ryan Nielsen. Host Aaron Freeman is joined by Ronnie "Fleek" Nunn Jr. (@NMFalcons) to discuss what makes them excited about seeing both entities in action this upcoming 2023 season. They also discuss some of the things that concern them entering the season, including head coach Arthur Smith's ability to manage and maximize so many "positionless" players.

Later, they break down why the cornerback position features the most intriguing roster battles ahead of Falcons training camp, as they wonder who will emerge as the team's starting nickel cornerback.
