Locked On Falcons - Daily Podcast On The Atlanta Falcons

Atlanta Falcons rookie running back Bijan Robinson is being projected to get drafted very early in most fantasy drafts this year, but is that going to blow up in fantasy owners’ faces? Host Aaron Freeman explains why he doesn’t expect Robinson to produce like one of the top 5 backs in fantasy by projecting his workload in comparison to Tyler Allgeier and Cordarrelle Patterson.

Later, he discusses which Falcons defensive rookie has the best chance to impact this year. He explains why cornerback Clark Phillips needs to win the starting nickel cornerback job or else he won’t have much of a role on special teams.

Finally, he breaks down the team’s undrafted free agent class to see which player has the best odds to stick on the 53-man roster this summer.

Old wounds resurface with the release of Netflix's new documentary series called "Quarterback." In it, former Atlanta Falcons quarterback Marcus Mariota gives his account of how his 2022 season went, including his ambiguous departure from the team this past December. Host Aaron Freeman has binged the show and gives his thoughts on how things ended for Mariota in Atlanta, as well as his thoughts on the two other QBs featured in the show: Patrick Mahomes and Kirk Cousins.

Later, he discusses the recent rankings of various Falcons players in ESPN's top 10 positional rankings including cornerback A.J. Terrell, safety Jessie Bates, tight end Kyle Pitts, and guard Chris Lindstrom. He discusses where he would rank those players, as well as offensive tackle Jake Matthews and defensive tackle Grady Jarrett. Then, he discusses where quarterback Desmond Ridder might rank in The Athletic's upcoming Quartback Tiers rankings and why Falcon fans shouldn't be paying that much attention to it.

Finally, he discusses the Instagram update from Pitts that he's healthy and ready for training camp. As well as the Falcons Fresh Cut series that dropped this week as beautiful propaganda.

The Atlanta Falcons special teams have been a strength of the roster for decades and that should continue in 2023. With kicker Younghoe Koo, punter Bradley Pinion, and long snapper Liam McCullough locked up to multi-year contracts, the Falcons core specialists should growth together for several seasons more. Host Aaron Freeman breaks down why special teams will be an important unit for the team in 2023 and also some key position battles.

He breaks down whether the NFL's new kickoff rules will impact Cordarrelle Patterson as a kickoff returner, and who will emerge in the competition to replace the injured punt returner Avery Williams. He also breaks down some of the key battles on the team's punt coverage unit such as gunner and personal protector.

The marquee signing of the Atlanta Falcons’ 2023 offseason was adding former Cincinnati Bengals safety Jessie Bates. Host Aaron Freeman breaks down exactly what makes Bates such a critical component of the Falcons’ hopes for a defensive turnaround. He looks at Bates’ ability to be a “guardian angel” as a deep centerfielder, which will lead to better, more aggressive play from the rest of the secondary, including fellow safety Richie Grant. He also discusses Grant’s skillset and why he should make strides in his third NFL season.

He also discusses Jaylinn Hawkins’ fit as a third safety and rookie DeMarcco Hellams’ value as a run-defender and special teams contributor. He also discusses if former XFL safety Lukas Denis may have a pivotal role as a developmental backup down the road.

The Atlanta Falcons cornerback position will be one of the more competitive spots on the roster in this summer’s training camp. With a vacancy at nickel cornerback, the team has three prime candidates to earn the starting gig: Mike Hughes, Clark Phillips, and Dee Alford. Host Aaron Freeman breaks down what each are bringing to the table and who he expects to win the roster battle.

Later, he discusses how starting cornerbacks A.J. Terrell and Jeff Okudah are also looking to compete for big paydays after this season. With Terrell potentially in the running to become one of the NFL’s highest-paid cornerbacks, while Okudah is poised to hit free agency and get his career back on track after a rocky three years with the Detroit Lions.

Finally, the Falcons still have even more competition at the position with Darren Hall, Tre Flowers, and Cornell Armstrong vying for perhaps as little as one remaining roster spot at cornerback. Aaron breaks down why Hall has fallen out of favor, if Flowers’ special teams value will help him stick, and if Armstrong’s confidence keeps him in the running.

The Atlanta Falcons have question marks at the linebacker position, mostly due to the unproven nature of Troy Andersen and Kaden Elliss. Host Aaron Freeman breaks down the team's unproven group on today's podcast. After an up-and-down rookie year, Andersen will become a full-time starter at middle linebacker and have to prove he was worth the team's 2022 second-round selection. Andersen's upside is high especially in coverage, but he'll have to prove he has the instincts and technique to match.

Elliss is another New Orleans Saints defection that has the potential to have a big impact on the Falcons pass-rush due to his prowess in that area. But can Elliss pick up where he left off in New Orleans last year and does he have the potential to be the first double-digit sack artist in Atlanta in years?

Finally, the Falcons also have concerns in terms of their depth. Mykal Walker is their most proven option, but will someone emerge in camp to solidify the back end of the roster? It's an open competition between Tae Davis, Andre Smith, Nate Landman, Dorian Etheridge, and Mike Jones Jr.

The Atlanta Falcons are expecting big things from 2022 second-round draft pick Arnold Ebiketie in 2023. How big a jump can he make in his second NFL season? Host Aaron Freeman discusses that and more on today’s podcast. He breaks down Ebiketie’s potential as a technician to unlock his full potential as a pass rusher.

Later, he discusses his lower expectations of the other young Falcons pass-rushers in DeAngelo Malone, Zach Harrison, and Ade Ogundeji. How many opportunities will they get to shine this year? Finally, he discusses veterans Lorenzo Carter and Bud Dupree and whether both players are better suited to the limited roles they’ll likely have in Atlanta moving forward versus past years. Finally, he discusses why undrafted free agent Ikenna Enechukwu (Rice) could put pressure on Ogundeji and push him to the roster bubble.

The Atlanta Falcons got Grady Jarrett some much-needed help along the interior defensive line this offseason with the additions of David Onyemata and Calais Campbell. Will that lead to a career year from Jarrett? Host Aaron Freeman breaks down why he thinks putting less of a burden on Jarrett’s back to carry to the team’s pass rush will help him get back to his former elite self. He breaks down what exactly can be expected from both Onyemata and Campbell this year on the field and in the locker room.

Later, he discusses the unknown surrounding veteran Eddie Goldman and whether he’ll return to peak form from a few years ago with the Chicago Bears. Ta’Quon Graham is an ascending young player that should benefit from the presence of veterans in the room and the coaching of defensive coordinator Ryan Nielsen. What other young players might emerge over the course of this summer?

Per @FanDuel, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have the worst odds to win the NFC South division. That is good news for the Atlanta Falcons, but are the Bucs truly going to be bad in 2023 or are they underrated? Host Aaron Freeman is joined by James Yarcho (@LockedOnBucs) to discuss that and make the case for and against the Bucs taking their third-straight division crown. They discuss the questions at quarterback involving Baker Mayfield or Kyle Trask, a new offensive coordinator in Dave Canales, if Todd Bowles is a capable head coach, and if injuries will rear their ugly head again in 2023.

Later, Aaron looks at Florida State (and former South Carolina) tight end Jaheim Bell as a 2024 NFL Draft prospect that may be intriguing to the Falcons due to his versatility to line up in a variety of spots. Will “positionless” football boost Bell’s stock or will he be slapped with the “tweener” label?

Per @FanDuel, the New Orleans Saints have the best odds of winning the NFC South in 2023. Host Aaron Freeman is joined by Ross Jackson (@LockedOnSaints) to discuss the case for and against the Saints winning the wide-open division. They discuss the return of Michael Thomas and whether the defense has taken a step back thanks to the defections of Ryan Nielsen, David Onyemata, and Kaden Elliss to the Atlanta Falcons. They also discuss offensive coordinator Pete Carmichael and whether new quarterback Derek Carr can come together to make the Saints offense hum again like it did under Sean Payton and Drew Brees.

Later, Aaron looks ahead to the 2024 NFL Draft at UCLA edge-rusher Laiatu Latu and whether or not he can be that “alpha” pass-rusher that the Falcons are missing. He discusses Latu’s circuitous route to UCLA after a brief retirement due to a neck injury and why his impressive 2022 production puts him in the upper tiers of edge prospects in recent memory.
