Earlier this week a listener named Andrew sent a request for a show centered on a hypothetical situation where Joe Douglas was hired as Jets general manager in January 2019. At that point the Jets had the second most salary cap room in the NFL and the third overall pick in the NFL Draft. They also had a quarterback with three years remaining on his rookie contract.
Of course Douglas wasn't hired then. He was only hired after Mike Maccagnan ran the entire offseason and essentially set the core of the Jets roster for the next two seasons. What would have happened in a Douglas 2019 offseason?
While I can't speak to specific players Douglas would have signed, there are many aspects that would likely be different from Adam Gase to the way positions are valued to the approach to free agency to broader aspects of the team's management. Ultimately I think the focus would be more on football than on media attention.
This is the topic of today's show.

On today’s podcast the Listener Spotlight series continues. Joining me is Tyler from the Washington DC area.
Tyler tells us of his trips to Miami to watch the Jets play the Dolphins. His first game was a Jets classic in the 2006 season. For whatever reason I have very distinct memories of the game. In the years that followed, Tyler has gotten the opportunity to see the Jets play in numerous stadiums across the league. We talk about some of his memories and why we should all contribute to getting him tickets for road games against Miami. We also talk about his favorite players. Tyler picks a pair of Jets legends. Finally we talk about the current state of the franchise.
The Listener Spotlight series is your chance to come talk about the Jets on the podcast. If you have interest in being part of a future segment, feel free to reach out.

The Jets continued to make roster moves yesterday. The most prominent of these was the release of wide receiver Quincy Enunwa. A 2014 sixth round pick, Enunwa had been plagued by injuries. After suffering a second neck injury in two years in the 2019 opener, it isn’t clear whether he will ever play again. Because of the poor structure of his contract, the deal gave the Jets maximum pain. The team will end up paying Enuwna over $20 million for -4 receiving yards.
On today’s podcast we talk about the Enunwa news. We also discuss the future of the franchise. The events of the last week have probably made success for the Jets in 2020, but the team is in position to make big improvements in the years ahead. On the show we look at some of the opportunities the team will have.

It was an eventful weekend for the Jets. There are changes to the roster involving two starters.
Linebacker CJ Mosley has opted out of the 2020 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and guard Brian Winters has been cut according to reports.
On today’s podcast I discuss the impact of these moves. These will both have salary cap implications for the Jets and affect what happens on the field. The on field impact will likely be felt much deeper by Mosley’s departure as he is the better player and was likely to take on a bigger role. The Jets signed Winters’ short-term replacement in the offseason, and he was part of some bottom of the league offensive lines in recent seasons.
