After a quiet first few days of free agency, the Jets picked up their activity level over the weekend.
The team made two additions at positions of need. Veteran guard Greg Van Roten was signed from Carolina while cornerback Pierre Desir was signed shortly after being released by the Indianapolis Colts.
A pattern seems to be emerging in the team's free agency approach. The Jets largely sat out the early stages of free agency, which are full of big contracts. Instead their focus has been targeting upgrades at key positions who will not sign financially prohibitive deals.
To clear out salary cap space, the Jets released cornerback Darryl Roberts. This seemed like a formality. Roberts did not live up to the contract the team gave him a year ago. The move cleared up $6 million in cap room.
The Jets also added a pair of depth players in Josh Andrews and Marqui Christian.
We talk about all of this and more on today's podcast.

Thursday was a quiet day in free agency for the Jets. The first four days have been relatively quiet overall for the Jets. I'm not sure that's a bad thing. I think it just reflects a new approach for the Jets. So far the new general manager has reportedly set a hard price on each player and been unwilling to go over that price.
As we move into the second wave of free agency, I expect to see a bit more activity from the Jets. The second wave is when prices get more reasonable and bargain deals can be made.
The Jets have some free agents who have not seen the market they were anticipating. They are Robby Anderson and Jordan Jenkins. Could they return to the Jets if their prices go down.
Over the next few days could the Jets add to their depth with relatively inexpensive deals? It would be a change in approach from the old general manager who seemed to view free agency as the method to build his foundation.
We discuss all of this on today's podcast.

The new league year officially began on Wednesday. In this day and age that seems like a bit of a misnomer. Since teams are able to speak with free agents before the official start of the new league year, the day has less significance than in the past. Players cannot officially sign before the start of the new league year, but outside of the occasional Anthony Barr situation, it is mainly a formality.
Today we discuss what the Jets did on Wednesday.
Their most notable move was bringing back slot cornerback Brian Poole. Poole will return on a one year deal. He was an excellent slot corner for the Jets in 2019.
More than retaining Poole, a pattern is emerging for the Jets in their approach to free agency. We will discuss.
The Jets also said goodbye to Trumaine Johnson and Brandon Shell.

At this point the NFL continues to plan to start the legal tampering period and the official beginning of the new league year on time. The legal tampering period is scheduled to being at noon Eastern today while the start of the league year is scheduled for Wednesday.
Over the weekend the NFL Players Association voted to accept a new Collective Bargaining Agreement. This agreement sets the rules of the league through the year 2030. There will be no strike or lockout.
The new CBA has a number of major changes for the NFL. We will discuss those changes on today's podcast. The number of regular season games each year is increasing. The number of Playoff teams is as well. So are the size of each roster, practice squad, and active players on game day. The number of preseason games is going down. Each of these will change how the NFL functions in the years to come, and we will discuss these changes.
