Locked On Jets - Daily Podcast On The New York Jets

Frequently when discussing a team's needs the focus is on whether a team is strong or weak at a given position. There are, however, numerous ways to look at a team's needs. Even if a certain position isn't necessarily a weakness there are likely areas where a position group is incomplete. These are needs within a position. On today's podcast we will take a look at what the Jets need at each position on offense.

Compared with the defense, the Jets offense needs a lot of help. The defense was above average a year ago while the offense was ranked at the bottom of the league in many major categories. What specifically could complete offensive positions groups for the team?

With free agency now mostly behind us, the focus turns to the 2020 NFL Draft. There are always a handful of late offseason signings, cuts, and trades. Generally speaking, though, the Draft is the last opportunity most teams have to improve their roster for the upcoming season.

I would say this year's Draft is very important for the Jets, but the Draft is always important. This will be Joe Douglas' first one running the Jets. He, of course, was hired after last year's Draft. The Jets are currently a team short on young talent, which helps to explain their long postseason drought. This year is another opportunity to change the trajectory of the franchise and bring an infusion of the young talent necessary to win in the NFL.

On today's podcast I offer some thoughts on how I think the Jets should approach the Draft and some pitfalls to avoid.

On today's podcast we catch up on some of the news from this week.

The NFL officially decided to expand the Playoffs. Starting in 2020 there will be fourteen teams in the postseason instead of twelve and seven from each conference instead of six. The second seed in each conference will host a game on Wild Card Weekend against the newly created seventh seed. This has been long expected and became a mere formality after the new collective bargaining agreement was approved. Is it a good idea.

Additionally the Jets re-signed quarterback David Fales. Fales joined the team during the 2019 season after Sam Darnold got mono and Trevor Siemian got hurt. He remained with the team after Darnold's return to the lineup. Is he just a placeholder, or will he be the backup quarterback? He should just be a placeholder as the Jets continue to search for a viable backup quarterback.

Finally, general manager Joe Douglas spoke in public this week. What did he share?
