The Jets introduce their new general manager today. Joe Douglas is scheduled to face the media for the first time in his new role around 3:00 p.m. Eastern. His hiring has been met with wide praise for the Jets. He is viewed as one of the best general manager prospects available.
The task in front of him is to build the first championship Jets team in five decades. On today's podcast we discuss some of the things he will need to do in order to accomplish that task. This is a top five offseason podcast list. We are looking at the five biggest tasks Douglas must accomplish.
Tune in to the show today for further details as we discuss his need to communicate, plan to work around the constraints of the job, develop a cap strategy, bring in a top notch scouting team, and restore order within a building that has too frequently lacked it.

The Jets have their new general manager, and the choice is receiving close to universal praise. Joe Douglas has generally been viewed as a blue chip prospect for the job. Those guys are not easier to find. They also are not easy to land. Candidates of this caliber frequently turn down interview requests.
The fact the Jets were able to land Douglas could potentially be a turning point for the franchise. We discuss that on today's podcast. The Johnson ownership has brought periods of success and failure for the Jets. The most recent stretch has been full of the latter.
The quality of ownership is not set in stone, however. Sometimes owners who seem good turn bad, and owners who seem bad turn good. Much like the trajectory of a playing career can go up and down. This has the potential to be a move that changes the trajectory of the Johnson tenure.

There was no podcast yesterday since I was sick. Thanks to everybody for bearing with me. We are back today. Since there was no Thursday mailbag, we are simply going to have one on Friday this week. The questions you submitted are greatly appreciated. If yours went unanswered please feel free to resend next week.
On today's show we look at what aspect of the Jets is getting the most buzz on social media, whether Le'Veon Bell's trademark patience could be more of a curse than a blessing behind an offensive line that isn't very good at run blocking, whether Chase Winovich would have been a better pick than Jachai Polite, whether Nick Mangold could return to the team, why C.J. Mosley isn't considered a game changing player while Jamal Adams is, what success would mean for Adam Gase, and the odds of the Jets trading for a center.

The Jets enter the middle of their offseason minicamp today. The three day event is the only time the entire team gets together during the offseason. The remainder of the offseason program is voluntary. The next time the Jets will be on the field will be for training camp to prepare for the season.
While this minicamp draws a lot of attention, it will not have a major effect on the 2019 season for the Jets. It is merely a series of offseason practices.
On today's podcast we discuss some things that actually will impact the Jets in 2019. Our normal offseason top five show is on Wednesday instead of Tuesday this week. Today we will discuss how the growth of late round Draft picks, Leonard Williams' ability to take the next step, Adam Gase's potential growth as a coach, Le'Veon Bell's return to the NFL, and the degree to which Sam Darnold improves will impact the Jets in both the short and long runs.

The Jets are searching for a new general manager. The first round of interviews is presumably at its end. We will soon find out whether a quick hiring will be made. Philadelphia's Joe Douglas seems to be the overwhelming favorite. Will he get the job? Will he accept? Will the Jets make a surprise offer to somebody else? Will they conduct a second round of interviews? Will they add more candidates to the search? We await the answers to those questions.
In the meantime today's podcast discusses the frequently misunderstood natures of searching for a general manager and the responsibilities of the job.
Dan Hatman is one of the most qualified people to discuss these concepts. He has worked in NFL front offices. He now writes for Inside the Pylon where he studies general manager searches each year. Dan even wrote his masters thesis on the job of an NFL general manager.
Dan joins me today for an extremely insightful look at the way things really work in the NFL.

When the next general manager of the Jets is hired he will take control of the front office. It will be his job to construct a vision and execute it.
With all of the drama surrounding the franchise and this search, the topic of data analytics has not frequently been mentioned. Presumptive favorite Joe Douglas currently works for the Eagles, one of the most effective teams in the league at leveraging data into on field results. One might guess he would bring that approach to New York.
The Jets' past use of data is an even bigger mystery. An ESPN ranking four years ago put the Jets among the professional sports franchises utilizing analytics the least. There were a few rumblings about Mike Maccagnan starting an analytics department, but there wasn't much reporting.
On today's podcast I offer thoughts on why analytics are important along with some misconceptions about their meaning.

The search for a general manager is going to kick into gear for the Jets over the next few days as the interview process gets going. There are currently four candidates being considered for the job now that George Paton of the Vikings has withdrawn his name from consideration. We could still see an extra name or two added to the search before the process is done.
On today's podcast I will discuss how I view the search for Mike Maccagnan's replacement. My feelings are different from those of many others. While I think Joe Douglas is a solid candidate, I don't think he's the only viable option. I believe all of the candidates are credible, and any hire should be met with an open mind. I also don't believe in looking solely at the success of the teams these candidates would depart as the method by which to judge them. These and other thoughts will be the focus of today's show.

Interviews are set to begin for the Jets' open general manager job. To celebrate the occasion, we are going to do a podcast mailbag today. Thanks to everybody who sent in questions. Feel free to resend yours in next week if it was not answered on this podcast episode.
Today we look at whether it makes a difference Le'Veon Bell is skipping most of the offseason program when he could be developing chemistry with Sam Darnold, whether left tackle or edge rusher should he a bigger long-term priority, the possible timeframe for the general manager search, the biggest mistake the team could possibly make on this search, who will win the backup quarterback spot, whether Jachai Polite was a steal in the third round, and the odds of the Johnsons selling the team.
