The starting quarterback competition has been the hot topic of debate in the Jets fanbase over the last couple of weeks. After years of the fanbase arguing about which of two mediocre quarterbacks is less bad, it has been refreshing to discuss the merits of two options with talent who have played effectively in training camp and the preseason.
I haven't really had a strong opinion either way to this point, but as I have followed the debate one thing has struck me in the last few days. I have come to believe the people arguing for Sam Darnold to start have made a stronger argument than the people arguing for Teddy Bridgewater to start. That is the topic of today's podcast.
It isn't like I'll be irate in the unlikely event Bridgewater is named the Week 1 starter. But I do talk about why Darnold looks like the better option to me.

Training camp is nearing its end in 2018 for the Jets. In fact, camp will end on Wednesday just ahead of this week's preseason game against the Giants.
On today's podcast we take a look at some of the players who have put themselves in position to earn surprise roster spots. Since the Jets bring 90 players to training camp each year, a certain percentage enter as longshots to actually make the team. Many players profiles as extra bodies whose main role is to fill out the roster. Sometimes these players surprise us, however, and end up putting together such a strong training camp and preseason that they earn a spot. Sometimes their competitors fail, which creates an unexpected opening. Today we look at four players whose chances on being on the final 53 are materially higher today than they were at the start of camp.

The Jets lost their second preseason game of 2018 last night to the Washington Redskins. Washington won the game 15-13 on a walkoff field goal. The score of this game didn't tell the entire story, though. It was not a very good performance by the Jets. The closeness of the game was a reflection of a few timely plays and the Jets playing a starting caliber quarterback against fringe roster players in the second half.
On today's podcast we look back on the game. How was the quarterback battle impacted by an up and down first half from Sam Darnold and a quality second half by Teddy Bridgewater. We also look at some of the winners and losers from the night in Washington. Which players helped their roster causes? Which players hurt them. There will also be a focus on the performances of the offensive line and the defense. How much do these performances really matter?

The Jets have their second game of the 2018 preseason tonight against the Washington Redskins in Landover, Maryland. This might have greater intensity than your typical preseason game as the two teams spent the week practicing against each other at the Redskins training facility in Richmond, Virginia. The practices were heated, and there were numerous scuffles.
The preseason game has plenty on the line for individual Jets players in its own right. There are position and roster battles that could turn based on tonight's results. That is the focus of today's podcast. I never see much of a point of previewing the opponent in preseason. These games are all about what happens on the Jets side.
On the show we discuss five things to watch, including Sam Darnold, the offensive line, players looking to build on strong training camps, players looking to build on strong first games, and players on their last chance.

The Jets have a Thursday night game this week so we will move our mailbag up to Wednesday to accommodate it. Thanks to everybody who sent in questions for the mailbag. I couldn't do the show without you. And apologies to those who sent questions I couldn't get to. Feel free to resubmit them next week.
On today's show we look at how much concern Jets fans should have over Mike Maccagnan's record with offensive linemen, whether the Jets will trade for an edge rusher before the start of the regular season, the odds the team will have four rookie starters, whether it is a good idea to have Darron Lee make the defensive calls, what Bilal Powell's role will be, why some franchises are bad long-term, whether the Jets should at least try to sign Teddy Bridgewater as a long-term backup, and whether the coaching staff should be held to account for a lack of player development.

On today's podcast, we finish our two part breakdown of the first preseason game of 2018. The Jets beat the Falcons 17-0 at MetLife Stadium in what was an almost perfect start to the preseason.
Today we return to our show previewing the game last Friday. I offered five things to watch. Now we will go back and evaluate those things. We already discussed the quarterbacks yesterday, but today we go into detail about how this first preseason game might have affected position battles, whether players having strong training camps continued them, and how enigma and disappointing players performed.

The Jets got their preseason underway on Friday night with a 17-0 win over the Atlanta Falcons at MetLife Stadium. It would be difficult to imagine the preseason starting better for the Jets. There were stellar performances up and down the roster but especially at the quarterback position.
We will provide a broader recap on tomorrow's show looking at some of the other performances, but I think everybody's focus is on the quarterbacks so they will be the topic of today's podcast. Josh McCown only briefly saw the field, but Teddy Bridgewater and Sam Darnold were both excellent. I will explain why I think Friday helped move Darnold closer to winning the starting job.

The preseason opener is finally here. Tonight the Jets kick off a game for the first time since the 2017 season ended. No, it isn't a real game. Those don't come for another month. With that said, it still is (sort of) football and another step closer to the start of the season.
On today's podcast we preview the game. Preseason previews are a bit different than regular season previews. The objective isn't really to win the game. It is more to evaluate. With that in mind, it doesn't seem worth it to give a scouting report on the other team or discuss key matchups. Our focus is going to be on the performances of individual Jets players.
On the show I offer five groups of players to watch against Atlanta, the quarterbacks, the position battles, the players having strong camps, the enigmas, and the disappointments.

It is Thursday, which makes it podcast mailbag day. Thanks to everybody who sent in such great questions. I got to as many as I could. If yours was not answered, feel free to ask again next week.
On today's show we look at the price the Jets should be willing to pay if Khalil Mack becomes available, whether adding Mack would give the Jets the league's best defense, whether the Jets should pursue Dante Fowler, whether the offensive line or pass rush has a better chance of being a pleasant surprise, how Derrick Jones is performing at training camp, whether Sam Darnold will get first team reps in the preseason opener, whether the Jets should look to extend Leonard Williams now, and whether Jamal Adams talks too much.

This is not the first week of training camp in 2018, but this has been my first chance to take a look at this year's version of the Jets. You can only judge so much from a couple of days of practice. It certainly is too soon to come to any sweeping conclusions. With that said, a few things have stuck out to me watching practice. That is the focus of today's podcast.
On this Wednesday edition of the show, I tell you why I think we will see Sam Darnold sooner rather than later, how Darnold fits the offensive system, which non-Darnold rookie could make an immediate impact for the team, a pleasant surprise, and a relative camp disappointment.
