Locked On Jets - Daily Podcast On The New York Jets

All eyes are on Sam Darnold at Jets training camp this year. Yesterday was my first look at the third overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, and I wanted to share my initial thoughts on today's podcast.

As always, I would discourage you from reading too much into the results of one practice. With practice, we don't even get the benefit of replay to see whether our analysis missed something on a given play.

With that in mind, my initial impressions of Darnold were largely positive. He did a number of impressive things both presnap and postsnap, and that is what we discuss on today's show.

The Jets are just a few days away from their first preseason game of 2018. It is this Friday against the Atlanta Falcons. Saturday night at Rutgers was the Green and White Practice, which typically takes place before the first preseason game. It was an exciting night as Sam Darnold continued his strong training camp. There is plenty of excitement around this team right now.

There were a few pieces of negative news on the injury front, the most concerning of which dealt with Kelvin Beachum. The starting left tackle sat out the practice. Head coach Todd Bowles revealed Beachum's timeframe to return is weeks, not days. For a team without great offensive line depth to lose its starting left tackle is concerning.

The motivated me to take a look at the team's depth, which is what we will do on today's podcast. We will discuss the positions where the Jets are equipped to handle and injury and those where they are not.

We are a little over a week into training camp. Tomorrow night's Green and White practice has become a bit of a milestone each year. It is a sign we are getting close to the start of the preseason, which in turn means the regular season is around a month away.

On today's podcast we take a look at five things the Jets need to do in the remainder of camp and the preseason. They are getting Sam Darnold plenty of reps to see where he is and gain experience, giving Teddy Bridgewater plenty of reps to showcase him for a potential trade, figuring out a tight end position that isn't looking too good, getting a handle on where some of the wild card players on the roster fit, and avoiding injuries.

We are now a week into a pretty eventual Jets training camp. To celebrate that fact and the fact today is Thursday, we have a podcast mailbag for you. Thanks once again to those of you who submitted questions. They certainly are appreciated. We could not have done the show without you.

Today we look at whether the Jets prevented the Bills from having a successful season by re-signing Josh McCown, whether the Jets, Chiefs, or Bills has had the most desirable last four decades, the extent to which veteran mentors matter for young quarterbacks, the extent to which turnovers in training camp practices matter for young quarterbacks, and whether the next Collective Bargaining Agreement should further standardize rookie contracts.

The Jets had Tuesday off. It was their first day down in training camp after four straight days of practice. The last practice was notable because it was Sam Darnold's first. With the rookie quarterback in camp, optimism is once again high in the Jets fanbase. This is an exciting training camp.

Not to temper this enthusiasm, but on today's podcast we look at five things in training camp you should avoid getting too excited over. At this time of year, imaginations run wild with the potential of breakout players. A few positive reports from training camp help this process along. Still, we should pump the brakes a bit when we hear certain things.

The show goes into details explaining why first team reps, quarterback statistics, production from players low on the depth chart, beat writer tweets, and reports of strong practices aren't always what they might seem to be.

The Sam Darnold holdout saga came to a merciful conclusion yesterday. The rookie quarterback reached a deal with the Jets and signed his contract in time to hit the practice field. Now everybody can get back to being excited for this new era of Jets football.

As we turn our attention away from the negotiating table and onto the practice field, the Jets will have a decision to make on their starting quarterback. The team will need to pick Josh McCown, Teddy Bridgewater, or Darnold. It also will need to set the terms of the competition.

On today's podcast we take a look at what the terms of the competition will be. There are a couple of different ways the Jets could play this. They could simply put the best guy on the field. They could give the incumbent a leg up. Finally, they could build the competition around the rookie's performance.

Training camp has begun for the Jets in 2018. It should be a happy and exciting time for a downtrodden fanbase. Jets fans have had a rough seven years, but there is finally reason for optimism. The team picked a potential franchise quarterback in the NFL Draft.

This is not a happy time, though, because that quarterback is not in training camp. Sam Darnold is holding out because he and the team have been unable to reach a contract.

On today's podcast we dive deep on the negotiations. You could debate how much Darnold is to blame for this. There are arguments to be made either way. What I think is more difficult to debate is that the Jets are totally mishandling the situation and have dug in over provisions irrelevant to the team.

Today is the first practice of 2018 training camp for the Jets. It is a big step forward to the start of the new NFL season. On today's podcast we do a mailbag show to coincide with camp getting underway. Thanks as always to those of you who submitted questions.

On this mailbag show we look at whether the Jets are being stubborn for not having Sam Darnold signed at the start of training camp, whether Darnold's and Joey Bosa's rookie contract difficulties are a sign that rookie holdouts are about to go on the rise, whether the Jets should make a big trade offer for Rams superstar Aaron Donald, which under the radar player might make an impact, the best tight end the Jets have had since the turn of the century, what it will take to get Nathan Shepherd onto the field, and more. It is a full show with a lot of great questions.

It begins. Today the Jets reported to training camp. This is a time of great excitement each year as it signals we are getting closer to the NFL season.

This year it is especially exciting around the Jets because they have a new blue chip quarterback prospect, Sam Darnold. Of course, there is a bit of apprehension around the fanbase because Darnold has yet to sign with the team on reporting day.

On our podcast this evening, we discuss the mechanics of a rookie deal and what potential problems could cause negotiations to hit a snag. Any potential hurdles seem so small that it probably should make you rest a little bit easier about Darnold signing his deal soon. With any luck, Darnold will be signed by the time you listen to the show. The way these rookie deals work, a team would have to be really dumb and stubborn to get to the point of having a player holdout.

Today we complete the second half of our two part mailbag for the week. Thanks for producing enough good questions for us to have two mailbag shows this week.

On this podcast episode we examine what grade Kacy Rodgers deserves for his work as defensive coordinator over the last three years, who would win a hypothetical matchup between Jerry Rice and Darrelle Revis in their respective primes, how Teddy Bridgewater and Sam Darnold might compare to Josh McCown as deep passers, who will get to choose the team's starting quarterback, the most encouraging sign Sam Darnold could show in training camp and the preseason, and which rookie quarterback will have the most successful 2018 season.

Thanks as always for listening. We are getting close to the start of training camp, which means daily podcast episodes.
