The NFL offseason has plenty of twists and turns. Teams change slowly over the course of a few months. We have reached the end of the transaction period. Yes, there will still be some player movement, but it will come at a slow pace and be infrequent. The Jets roster you see today is largely if not entirely the one you will see take the field Week 1 in Detroit.
Earlier in the offseason, we discussed wild card type players a bit on the podcast. That came before the NFL Draft. Now that new players are part of the team, we are going to go back and reassess the biggest wild card players on the roster.
These wild cards will help shape the 2018 season for the Jets. These are players who could end up being very valuable or not valuable at all. We know Leonard Williams is probably going to produce quite a bit. We know Christian Hackenberg probably won't. The players who will determine whether the season is a success or failure are the less known commodities who could go either way.
On today's podcast we look at Henry Anderson, Jamal Adams, Terrelle Pryor, Teddy Bridgewater, and Sam Darnold.

I had a few other ideas for today's podcast, but I kept coming back to the quality of questions we got in this week's mailbag call. We had enough for two mailbags, and I enjoy doing those shows so I decided to have a second mailbag show this week. Thanks once again to those of you who sent in those questions.
Today we take a look at when Sam Darnold will hit the field, whether the Jets should wait until the offensive line is improved to put him out there, which historical Jets uniforms are the best, what we should look forward to at OTAs, whether Robby Anderson or Quincy Enunwa will have a more productive year, whom the starters will be on the defensive line, and what the Jets might do in next year's Draft.
Truth be told, we probably had enough good questions for a third mailbag. We ran out of days this week so I apologize if your question was not answered. Feel free to send it in next week.

Today we return to the podcast mailbag. Thanks to those of you who answered our mailbag call with comments and e-mails. We had a great group from which to choose.
Today we take a look at whether we should expect Todd Bowles to put together one of the top defenses in the league this season, whether Christopher Johnson has done a more effective job than his brother running the Jets, how the team should handle the distribution of snaps for quarterbacks during OTAs and training camp, what needs to happen for the Jets to make the Playoffs in 2018, the extent to which Jeremy Bates can incorporate run-pass options into the offense, and which coach from Jets history would be the best for the current team.

With most offseason moves completed, it is time to take stock of where the Jets are. Yesterday our podcast examined the positions where the Jets have improved most in the offseason. Today we are going to take a look at the positions where the team still has work to do.
There wasn't much of a chance the Jets were going to be able to fill all of their needs in one offseason. Building this roster is going to take longer. It still is plausible the Jets could further upgrade their roster between now and the start of the 2018 season. There is the occasional summer transaction. A player might wear out his welcome with another team. There could be a contract dispute of some sort. A team might just decide to go in a different direction. With that said, the vast majority of moves are now done. If you are able to upgrade a spot after this point, you are lucky.
With that in mind, our focus is on positions that are still incomplete for the Jets.

The period in which the Jets could improve their roster in 2018 is just about over. There are always a handful of moves that take place between now and the season. There are still a few decent free agents who have yet to catch on with a new team. There are a couple of players who will be late cuts due to contract disputes or other issues. Some useful players might get released at the end of training camp.
For the most part, though, each team has all of its major contributors for 2018 on the roster at this point. The most frequent periods where NFL teams upgrade their rosters are in the early days of free agency and the NFL Draft.
With that in mind, our podcast today focuses on upgrades the Jets made during the offseason. In particular, I take a look at the four positions I think were the most improved in free agency and the Draft.

The Jets have drafted a quarterback in the first time in nine years. On a superficial level, there are some similarities. In both instances, the Jets traded up into the top five to land a new signal caller. Both Mark Sanchez and Sam Darnold attended USC in college. Those are indeed superficial comparisons, however. These are two different players, and they entered different circumstances.
Those differences are the focus of our podcast today. The Jets of 2018 are very different from the Jets of 2009, and one could make the argument this situation is more conducive to the growth of a young quarterback.
Back then, the Jets essentially painted themselves into a corner. The Jets had no viable option aside from starting the young quarterback. This time the Jets have left themselves with a couple of options in case playing Darnold right off the bat is not the best choice.
Expectations are also lower today than they were then. The 2009 Jets were a team filled with veterans who had a new coach and had just missed the Playoffs. The focus of that team was making a deep run, not developing a quarterback.
We discuss both of these factors on today's show.

It is Thursday, which means it is time for a podcast mailbag. It is our first mailbag since the 2018 NFL Draft. Thank you to those who submitted questions for this week's show.
Today we look at whom the Jets can trust to generate a pass rush in 2018, whether they might look to import a pass rusher through a trade, the reputation of new offensive coordinator Jeremy Bates, whether there should be a focus on the offensive line in the Draft next year, whether the Jets could have justified picking a player at another position third overall, a good topic for a potential Jets documentary, and whether Mark Jackson would be a good choice for Knicks head coach,

There is not much doubt the Jets' selection of Sam Darnold in last week's NFL Draft was a potentially franchise-altering pick.. The tangible reasons for this are obvious. Quarterback is the most important position on the field. Having a quality quarterback alone is not enough to guarantee a team's success, but lacking a quality quarterback virtually guarantees a team will not be successful.
The importance of the pick may also go beyond tangible on field benefits. It might change the franchise in other ways. It seems fair to say that the Jets have not been a successful organization over the past seven years. The franchise has one of the longest Playoff droughts in the league. Beyond that, there have seemed to be senses of doom and pessimism around the Jets and their fanbase.
On today's podcast, we take a look at how this all might change now that the team has landed its new quarterback of the future.

The Jets made a franchise altering selection last Thursday night when they used the third overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft to grab Sam Darnold.
On today's podcast I early thoughts on some the biggest ticket questions and issues surrounding Darnold. Should he be thrown into the starting lineup immediately? Would the Jets' coaching staff trust a young quarterback so early? Is Teddy Bridgewater actually one of the biggest losers from the Jets picking Darnold? Should the Jets cut Bryce Petty and Christian Hackenberg immediately? Do the Jets now have the best long-term outlook at quarterback in the AFC East?
I offer my answers to these questions on today's show.
