The big news in the NFL from Tuesday was the stunning trade of Alex Smith to Washington, a trade which has implications across the league. For starters, we can scratch Smith off the list of options for the Jets and other quarterback needy teams. Perhaps more significantly, we can now erase the pencil and write in ink that Kirk Cousins will be an option. There will be no last minute reconciliation between the player and his team. Cousins will be leaving our nation's capital. The Jets figure to be a contender for his services based on their need at quarterback and cap space.
We are mixing up the podcast schedule a little bit this week. The mailbag will happen today on Wednesday, and the Super Bowl prediction will happen on Thursday.
On today's mailbag we look at whether the Jets will try hard to sign Cousins, whether they should try hard to sign Cousins, who they will pick at 6 if they address the quarterback position in free agency, whether the CBA has negatively impacted the team, whether the team should look to balance its blocking scheme, whether Muhammad Wilkerson can be traded, and which free agent wide receivers might be worth a look.

Krisitan Dyer is our guest on today's podcast. If you are not familiar with Kristian, he writes about the NFL for the Metro NY newspaper and the Sporting News. He also covers soccer, but that is not our focus today.
We start the show off by talking about an article Kristian wrote a few weeks ago when he suggested the Jets should look to free agency instead of the Draft to try and find their quarterback going forward. That article received some criticism from Jets fans, but Kristian believes the Jets are not far away from competing for a Playoff spot. We discuss this in greater detail on the show, going into the options for the team at the most important position on the field. We also talk about the offseason philosophy the Jets should take and priority free agents.
Then Kristian does the unfathomable. He defends the reincarnation of the XFL and lays out a path where it could become a viable league.

It is a busy time of the year for football. In unserious football developments, the Pro Bowl took place over the weekend, and the XFL did not fold. In more serious news, we turn the page to Super Bowl week as the Patriots and Eagles will meet with the Lombardi Trophy on the line. The Senior Bowl also took place over the weekend as the top prospects competed in Mobile, Alabama. Some argue the practices in the leadup to the game are just as if not more important than the game itself for evaluation purposes.
This seems like a good time to talk about the Draft. On today's podcast we look at the Draft. Rather than discuss individual prospects, today we talk about philosophies for picking players. It seems this time of year many members of the media and fans have one piece of criteria for a good Draft pick, whether a player plays a position where the team is currently weak. Today we talk about some of the reasons this viewpoint can be problematic.

On today's podcast we take a look at the impact some of the news of the past week might affect comings and goings for the Jets. Even though we are not yet in the busy part of the offseason, we have seen some significant developments over the last few days.
Of course, a report broke early in the week that the Jets are likely to hire Jeremy Bates as their new offensive coordinator. The Jets still have not confirmed the hire, but it seems like we have already seen the impact. The team made another tweak on the coaching staff this week by firing offensive line coach Steve Marshall. The move might have been related to performance, but it might have been related to scheme. There are rumors about the Jets bringing in a new offensive line coach to help install Bates' blocking scheme. On today's show we discuss these developments.
We also discuss a few players who might be impacted by recent developments. One offensive lineman might be less likely to be around next year as the result of a scheme switch. Meanwhile Robby Anderson's suddenly uncertain status makes it more likely one wide receiver will be back.

It is mailbag Thursday on the podcast. Thanks once again to those of you who submitted questions. We unfortunately could not get to all of them. If your question was not answered, feel free to resubmit it next week for our next mailbag podcast.
Today we look at whether the Jets should trade back in the Draft if they sign a veteran quarterback, whether Josh McCown could still play in an emergency situation in the event he retires and becomes a coach, whether the Jets can still draft a pure pocket passer for Jeremy Bates' offense, what the potential hiring of a "run game coordinator" would mean, how the running back class looks in this year's Draft, what to make of Wyoming quarterback Josh Allen, and how hard the Jets should look at signing a premium wide receiver in free agency.

The Jets decided to make another coordinator change last week, firing John Morton. A preliminary report suggests quarterbacks coach Jeremy Bates is likely to replace Morton in 2018.
This is the third time Todd Bowles has changed a coordinator. Two offensive coordinators have been let go in his tenure, Chan Gailey and Morton, along with one special teams coordinator, Bobby April.
The one coordinator who has stayed through the entire Bowles tenure is Kacy Rodgers. Rodgers has helped Bowles run his defense to the chagrin of many fans.
Rodgers' presence suggests Bowles wants to keep an active hand in the defense the Jets run. The head coach's fingerprints have on a lot of what the Jets have done schematically over the last three years even if Rodgers has the title of coordinator.
On today's podcast we look at whether Bowles would be better-served taking a step back from running his unit as many successful head coaches do or whether he is right to play an active role as many successful head coaches also do.

The Jets have not yet made an official announcement on their new offensive coordinator, but a report came out Monday suggesting it will be quarterbacks coach Jeremy Bates. ESPN's Adam Schefter reported the Jets are expected to promote Bates, who joined Todd Bowles' staff a year ago, to replace John Morton.
Today's podcast is focused on the move. Is it a good move? What does it mean?
I think the optics of the entire search left something to be desired, but optics aren't everything. This will ultimately come down to how effectively Bates can do the job, and there are some reasons for optimism on that front. We also will talk about the type of scheme Bates will install. It could be one that will help a young quarterback produce.

Super Bowl LII is set. The AFC Champion New England Patriots will take on the NFC Champion Philadelphia Eagles in two weeks in Minneapolis.
The Patriots scored a comeback win in the AFC title game over Jacksonville on Sunday, while the Eagles overcame a slow start to blow out the Minnesota Vikings in the NFC Championship Game. On today's podcast, we look back at the two games.
Sunday's games don't call for a lot of high level analysis. They came down to a few key moments and key performances. On today's show we look at what happened. Why are the Pats and Eagles going to the big game, while the Jaguars and Vikings finished?
