Locked On Penguins - Daily Podcast On The Pittsburgh Penguins

Is Johan Larsson going to be a Pittsburgh Penguin? There was nothing new to report on that front on Thursday, which has led Hunter to believe that he won't be signing. That said, Hunter does look at what he would bring to the Penguins lineup if he does get signed. He looks at his defensive ability and how he clogs up the defensive zone, plus looks at what he's produced at throughout his career. He then looks at what line he'd fit best on before moving on to some updates on a potential defenseman trade. Hunter brings up that the Penguins HAVE TO get an impact forward in return, preferably a finisher since this team hasn't done much to replace some of the goals that were scored last year. Which defenseman would bring the most back in a trade? He looks at a few different trade scenarios and then makes a bold prediction about how many defensemen will be moved out. Finally, Hunter does a quick look at the "way too early" lines for next season and what he would do if he were Mike Sullivan (it has the defensive pairings in if both MP28 and Marino are moved).

What a last 24 hours for the Pittsburgh Penguins! Hunter starts the show with the obvious: The Evgeni Malkin contract! He goes into how good it is for the short-term and how the Penguins made the right choice in bringing him back, especially when you look at some of the other centers that signed for big money. He also looks at how you're going to see a motivated player who wants to prove a lot of people wrong, plus looks at the role Sidney Crosby played to get the two sides talking again. He also looks at how this move is what most of the fans wanted when all three came into the league: To go out together, even if they don't win another Stanley Cup. He also takes a shot at the people who will be miserable about this if they don't win before going into the Jan Rutta signing. Hunter looks at the data and analyzes his game to see what he's going to bring to the lineup next year. Which defenseman would he be best with? Which defenseman is going to be traded? Hunter looks at what the team must get in return for one of those players since the forward group isn't fully filled out yet. Finally, Hunter ends the show looking at the depth signings and wondering if Johan Larsson is going to be a Pittsburgh Penguin soon.

As promised, Josh Yohe of The Athletic joins the show to touch on EVERYTHING regarding the Pittsburgh Penguins. The two first chat about Evgeni Malkin (3:00) and if the team and his side can reconvene for a deal, plus how the Malkin camp is truly feeling right now. Josh also touches on how Sidney Crosby is doing his part to try and get Malkin to stay (and he never goes into these negotiations), plus if a four-year term was really offered, and who is to blame in this situation. He goes into the chances that Malkin potentially stays before Hunter & him go into potential replacements. What would a Vince Trocheck contract look like? Is there a way to trade for JT Miller? The two also discuss if the Penguins are close to offloading a defenseman and argue for which one it should be before getting into the Rickard Rakell deal. How fast did that one come together? Is there concern about the term and AAV? What happens if he doesn't play with Crosby? All that, plus a lot of other info is in this episode of the Locked On Penguins podcast.

We never thought this day would come...but it's coming quick. Hunter starts the show off by blasting everyone involved with regard to the Evgeni Malkin negotiations. He goes after the Malkin camp & the Penguins front office since it's insane that it even got to this point. He goes into how each side failed, plus touches on if there's any way this can be mended with only two days to go. After that, he goes into replacement options for Malkin and how it looks pretty bleak, but he does get into some core Claude Giroux and JT Miller discourse. He then goes into the big news with the qualifying offers and why there were no surprises before finishing the episode with some mailbag questions. All that, plus much more on this episode of Locked On Penguins.

It's a late-night edition of the Locked On Penguins podcast, but there was A LOT to get to for this one. Hunter starts the show by diving into the Kris Letang extension and how it looks like both sides got what they wanted. He looks at how the Penguins got some big-time cap savings with it, which SHOULD make it easier to sign Evgeni Malkin. He also looks at how term should be a non-issue here since the team won't be that good when the last couple of years of that contract are happening. After he discusses Letang, he touches on Owen Pickering and how the Penguins made a really good pick with this first-rounder. He goes into the scouting report that he and Jason had for him and looks at some NHL player comps for him and what you can expect if he gets to the NHL level. He also addresses the "top down" model and why fans shouldn't be assessing the pick just based on that. Finally, Hunter gives the latest on the Malkin contract talks and why there's no reason for this to not get done, plus what this could mean for Rickard Rakell's future.

It's a busy period for the Pittsburgh Penguins and Hunter has all of the news right here on a fresh episode! He starts it by discussing Ron Hextall's comments to the media and why a Kris Letang deal is expected to be announced at any time. He again goes into what it'll likely look like before switching gears to Evgeni Malkin. Is there anything new on that front? He then goes to a new report from Rob Rossi of The Athletic where he shares the Penguins' last offer to Malkin before the two sides met again. Are the Penguins willing to give him more term? Will Geno accept less money to get more term? Hunter speculates about that after Rossi reported it and looks at how that should be an easy decision for multiple reasons. In the second segment, Hunter goes over the Penguins' schedule for next season and highlights some critical matchups, road trips, and all that jazz. He also circles some unusual things about the schedule that looks to be happening for the first time, plus gives the game that he'll 100% be in attendance for next season. Finally, Hunter reveals the full draft board that he and Jason of Pens Twitter made together.

There WAS a signing on Tuesday but not the one you all were waiting for. That's right, Casey DeSmith is back for the next two years to be Tristan Jarry's backup. Hunter goes into the deal and gives his thoughts on whether the Penguins made the right move or not. He points out DeSmith's deficiencies with staying healthy and not being consistent, while also looking at some of the other goalies available and comparing his numbers to them. He also looks at how the Penguins are taking another massive gamble again by running this tandem back for a third time, especially since there are questions about both goalies. After the DeSmith talk, he gets to the news that the Penguins and Letang are closing in on a deal. He looks at how both sides seem to be getting what they want (if it gets done) and how this was the only possible option for the team heading into the next three years. Finally, Hunter shouts out Dana Heinze for the incredible job he did with the Penguins throughout his tenure while going into a couple of fun stories surrounding him and the core players. All that, plus a little bit more draft talk, on this episode of the Locked On Penguins podcast.

Happy 4th of July! Hunter always has Penguins content for this show and starts it off by touching on the latest update regarding Evgeni Malkin & Kris Letang from Pierre Lebrun. Is there anything new? Why would Ron Hextall only start out with two-year deals for both? Has there been movement, especially on the Malkin ones? Hunter gets into all of that, plus spends the last couple of minutes saying why it may not be a good idea to pay Nazem Kadri if Malkin does decide to walk. After that, Hunter does some NHL Draft Talk and goes into the "Lottery Guys" section that he and Jason have on their board. Which of these players has the best chance of panning out? Which players have more bust potential? Hunter gives his scouting report on them and who some of their NHL player comps are before closing the show with a silly season free-agent target: Claude Giroux. How would it make sense? Can he play Center again? What would the money look like? Would he want to be a Penguin? All that, plus much more on this episode of Locked On Penguins.

It's finally July! The offseason continues to rage on and the news with the Pittsburgh Penguins never sleeps. Hunter starts the show by touching on the latest regarding Kris Letang as Elliotte Friedman gave an update on 32 Thoughts. Are the two sides getting closer? What's the gap now? Hunter shares some optimism towards a new deal as he's feeling more confident about a deal getting done with Letang than he does with Malkin. He also touches on the David Pagnotta update and whether there's a chance that Letang's AAV could be below 8. Following that, Hunter gives his thoughts on the rumors that the Penguins are discussing a new deal with Casey DeSmith. There are some conflicting reports, but which way should the Penguins go? Is it right to look for a new backup? Has DeSmith done enough to earn that job for a third straight season? Finally, Hunter ends the show with a little more draft talk as he gives a couple more names that could be available to them, plus takes a listener's question about a potential free agent fit.

It's a special crossover with Locked On Capitals as this hasn't happened in a long time. Hunter and Dan start the show by discussing the Evgeni Malkin rumors and if he could potentially be a good fit for the Capitals. What would both fanbases think of it? Would it be right to see Malkin help Ovechkin chase the all-time goal record? Hunter then updates the listeners with news about the contract discussions as the two sides aren't super close. After that, the two share their favorite moments of the rivalry and how it's become one of the best in all of sports over the years. Hunter brings up his favorite memories as a kid, while Dan also touches on his favorites from a Capitals perspective. The two then touch on what the Capitals need to do this summer to get back into Stanley Cup contention. Which goalies should they go after? Is there a certain layer that Dan wants to go after in free agency? Who should be on the trade block? Dan then repeats the cycle for Hunter in the last segment as he asks what the Penguins need to do this offseason to stay in contention. All that, plus much more, on this special episode of Locked On Penguins.
