The Pittsburgh Penguins surprised everyone on Tuesday with an extension for Mike Sullivan! This new extension will start in a couple of years and will take him all the way until 2027 (if he's still here). Hunter goes into the extension and what it means for the present and future, plus shoots down this wild opinion that the Penguins shouldn't have made this move because "they've lost in the first round four straight years." He looks at the real reasons they've lost, and he always puts a winning formula forward, even if the team doesn't always win. He also looks at how much Sidney Crosby and the entire Penguins core respect him, which is something that hasn't always been the case in this era with other coaches. He then discusses how much confidence the front office and especially the new ownership has in him, based on their statements, and how he's one of a few coaches who probably has a "lifetime" contract with his respective team. Finally, he wraps the show up with news and notes around the league from the last couple of days.

Happy Thursday! Hunter starts the episode with another RoboPenguin update as Icetetics is reporting that the jersey is going to have a gold gradient. Is that what the Penguins should be doing? Hunter dives into that report and voices some displeasure over it since it would kinda ruin the logo in a way. He looks at how there have been too many plain gold jerseys as of late for the Penguins and how they need to change it up a little bit (just don't go for a blue jersey). After that update, he looks at the race for the 12th forward spot and who has the inside edge heading into training camp and the preseason. Is it Drew O'Connor? Is it Ryan Poehling? What about Drake Caggiula or Josh Archibald? He looks at who the best option is for the team in that spot and how the player can potentially contribute in more than one way. Also: Is it a given that DOC makes the team? Hunter goes into that as well before ending the show with some Jeff Carter talk. He dives into what Carter needs to do next season in order to be more consistent, plus looks at if 3C is still the best position for him at this stage in his career.

Yes, Hunter is back with a fresh new episode of Locked On Penguins. After a few days of taking care of some personal things, Hunter starts the show by addressing the Mike Vellucci extension and what it means for the team going forward. He looks at his work with the forwards over the last couple of years, while also looking at what needs to change with the PK going into next season. Hunter makes a case for a few select forwards to take some reps with the unit (one of them was really good at it when he was in Toronto) while also wanting Vellucci to not change the entire strategy in a playoff series. After that, he goes into Teddy Blueger's crazy night in Da Beauty League as he had four goals and seven points, while also getting into a...fight? What?! Yep, you read that right. He's had a great summer and there are some higher expectations for him this season. He then goes into the Paul Stastny signing and why it would've made a lot of sense for the Penguins if they had the money for it. Finally, he discusses the big elephant in the room...THE ROBOPENGUIN! He gives a few updates on it and looks at what the Penguins should do with the reverse retro jersey now that the design was leaked.

There was FINALLY some news regarding the Pittsburgh Penguins on Thursday. Hunter dives into the Todd Reirden extension and promotion and why it does make sense for the Penguins going forward. He looks at his track record with Kris Letang since he came back, plus what he did with Mike Matheson after Jim Rutherford acquired him just a couple of years ago. He looks at what he could do with Petry even though he's a bit older, plus how the entire organization respects him as he's continued to grow since he got fired from Washington. He finishes the segment up with the power play discussion and why there are numerous reasons that it'll get back to where it normally is next season. After that, Hunter analyzes the Sean Monahan salary dump trade and shows the fans how prices are sky-high to move out bad contracts. What does this mean for the Penguins? Could a depth D trade be their only way out of the logjam? Why are prices so high right now? Finally, he ends the show with some way-too-early trade candidates for next season when the team is likely looking for some forward help towards the deadline.

It's a bit late on Wednesday but hey, better late than never, right? Hunter starts out the show with some quick thoughts on Jack Johnson signing with the Chicago Blackhawks before ranking the top five best moments/games from the Penguins season. Yes, one of them is the Opening Night game against the Tampa Bay Lightning, but a couple of them might surprise you. For instance, he leaves Jake's 40-goal game out for something else. After that, he gives the top five games that he's most looking forward to this season, which also has some surprises. There aren't a lot of divisional games on this list, something that Hunter hasn't done in years. Finally, he looks at if Mike Sullivan's expiration date could be coming if the Penguins don't get results in the playoffs (I hope to god that it does not). All that, plus much more on this episode of Locked On Penguins.

Happy Tuesday! Hunter is back with a new episode of Locked On Penguins and he starts the show by looking at where the Penguins ranked in "average contract value added per team," from Evolving Wild. He explains how it works and what they're evaluating before giving his kudos to Ron Hextall for getting a lot of great things done (No, this doesn't factor in trades and whatnot). He reminds everyone that there could be more to come, even with training camp just a month away. The Penguins still have 9 NHL defensemen, after all. After that, Hunter looks at the NHL Network's top 20 centers and why they mostly got it right regarding Sidney Crosby & Evgeni Malkin. He touches on who he'd move those two players over in their respective spots (not many) before ending the show with a thought about Jeff Petry. He explains why he's a lot more confident in Petry's ability to handle top pairing minutes if something happened to Kris Letang this season where he's out for a few games. All that, plus much more on this episode of Locked On Penguins.

Happy Friday. Yes, it's now mid-August but the content NEVER sleeps. (I also apologize for the meh audio today, the mic spazzed out for some reason). Hunter starts the show by discussing what a contract extension looks like for Jake Guentzel. Yes, he's still two years away from becoming a UFA but that will fly by. He looks at Filip Forsberg as a comp since they're right around the same age (though Forsberg came into the league a bit quicker than Guentzel did. He gives his rough estimate of what the Penguins would likely pay him, and he tries to give a number that the Penguins could refuse (it would be very hard for them to do that). He also does point out the risk in those sorts of deals before pivoting to Johan Larsson leaving for Sweden. Hunter touches on why a deal with the Penguins was likely nixed before looking up Larsson's numbers and being confused as to how no team wanted to give him anything. Finally, Hunter ends the show by catching up with a few Penguin players playing in "Da Beauty League" in Minnesota as it's a summer league for a great cause. All that, plus much more, on this episode of Locked On Penguins.

Happy Thursday! Hunter starts off the show by wishing his condolences to Ben Stelter, the young Oilers fan who lost his life due to brain cancer earlier this week before getting into the meat of the episode. After that, he brings up the debate on if the Penguins should wait to extend Tristan Jarry after the season or if they should just get it out of the way now. He looks at his numbers from the past couple of years to see what AAV he could get followed by what he still needs to see in Jarry to feel comfortable about an extension right now. He then gives his stance on it, even though the goalie market next year isn't that good before touching on some Metro power rankings. How do the Penguins currently stack up to the rest of the Metro teams? Are they still squarely a playoff team heading into next season? Which teams have improved vs which teams have not? Finally, Hunter looks at some other pending UFAs on the Penguins and gives his thoughts on if the Penguins should have any extension talks with them. All that, plus much more, on this episode of Locked On Penguins.

Happy Monday! Hunter is home now and starts the show by wishing Sidney Crosby a delighted 35th birthday. He goes into some of Sid's best moments throughout his career, including when he had his teeth knocked out by Darian Hatcher and then scored the game-winner as a rookie. He also looks at how much he's grown as a player and a leader on and off the ice over his career and how Pittsburgh is just lucky to have him. He then looks at how many points he'd likely have now had David Steckel and Victor Hedman not concussed him during the peak of his career. After that, Hunter looks at some hires made by the Penguins on Monday and what they mean going forward before giving a small scoop on the Winter Classic jersey that hasn't been announced yet. Finally, he ends the show with some reverse retro talk and goes into what the Penguins could be planning for that jersey later this year.

Happy Friday! It's the week's final episode, and there's plenty to discuss. Hunter starts the show by answering a question from a listener about Malkin's 1,000th game for next season. Should he have to sit out one game to get the honor at home? Would that even matter to him and the fans? He also gets into if the Penguins should rest their starters at various points during the season if the team is in a playoff spot (like NFL teams do) before touching on if Evgeni Malkin could move to the wing during this four-year deal. What would have to happen to get to that point? Would it be right away if the Penguins sign JT Miller next summer? Finally, Hunter goes around the league to catch up on all the latest news & notes.
