Locked On Penguins - Daily Podcast On The Pittsburgh Penguins

The Pittsburgh Penguins have been deemed the team to watch at the 2025 NHL Draft, so is a big move on the horizon? Hunter rounds out his 2025 NHL Draft endorsement list for the Penguins and begins the show discussing Arizona State's Cullen Potter. He gives his scouting report on him before Pat chimes in with his thoughts. They then move to Ben Kindel, a very smart player with a lot of offensive upside. Finally, there have been more reports connecting the Penguins to moving up in the draft. Will this happen, or is this just a smokescreen?

Now that the Penguins have back-to-back picks in the first round, who should their two selections be? Patrick and Hunter begin the show discussing a massive defenseman in Radim Mrkta, who could be a solution on the Penguins' blue line and will likely be available at 11th or 12th. The 6'6" blueliner might not be the flashiest prospect, but he does a lot of things right and could be a steady presence for the Pens long-term. Then, they shift the focus to forward, where another rat-style player who plays physical, goes to the net, and could be an asset on the power play in Carter Bear. Finally, they shift back to defense and discuss Jackson Smith, a smooth-skating D-man who plays a higher-risk, but higher-reward kind of game.

The Penguins, as of now, will have back-to-back draft picks in the 2025 NHL Draft, officially getting the Rangers’ first-round pick. Hunter and Patrick begin the show discussing the latest on trade rumors surrounding Bryan Rust and Rickard Rakell. The situation for the Penguins with these two forwards is unique as the Penguins hold most of the leverage, so when and should they trade them? Then, the New York Rangers made it official on Tuesday morning, announcing they have informed the Penguins and the league that they will give the Penguins the 12th overall pick in this year’s draft. Finally, they look at two more potential picks in defenseman Kashawn Aitcheson and forward Brady Martin.

We've made it to NHL Draft week, and the Penguins have a lot of decisions to make! Patrick and Hunter start the show giving you all the information you need to know about the 2025 NHL Draft, including when it will be live, where it will be, and how many picks the Penguins have as of Monday morning. They also discuss how this will be the first time the NHL holds a "decentralized" draft and whether or not that's a good idea. Then, it's time to dive deeper into Hunter's draft board, starting with center Jake O'Brien, who had a solid year and could be a piece in the Penguins' puzzle to get bigger and harder to play against. Finally, they bring up a polarizing prospect in Roger McQueen, a big center who is getting mixed reviews heading into this weekend's draft.

New Penguins head coach Dan Muse has his coaching staff for next season, and it’s mostly pretty good! Hunter and Patrick start the show breaking down the full coaching staff for the 2025-26 season, which officially includes Nick Bonino, Todd Nelson, Rich Clune, and retains goaltending coach Andy Chiodo. Speaking of Chiodo, they take the middle segment of the show to discuss whether or not the Penguins should have moved on from the goalie coach or if the team has just been a victim of poor goaltending and poor defense. Finally, it’s Fan Take Friday once again, and they take your questions and hot takes about everything from season predictions, draft positioning, and the length of the NHL season!

Penguins President of Hockey Operations Kyle Dubas said the team could look at trading for and signing RFAs, and a pretty promising one could be available. Patrick and Hunter start the show discussing the possibility of the Penguins going after Dallas Stars' forward Mavrik Bourque, who could be available via trade after Dallas re-signed Matt Duchene. Bourque seems to fit exactly the type of player Dubas and the Penguins have been targeting: young, affordable, and with a lot of upside. Then, we get the first two installments of Hunter's Penguins Draft Board. They first talk about maybe their favorite prospect, Victor Eklund, a Swedish forward who would be a slam-dunk pick for the Penguins. Then, to finish the show, they talk about Lynden Lakovic and how he would be a stretch at 11, but still not a bad pick.

Newly-hired Penguins' Head Coach Dan Muse has one of his first assistants, and it's the B from the legendary HBK Line! Patrick and Hunter begin the show talking about the return of Penguins legend Nick Bonino, but not as a player. It was confirmed by the man himself that he is hanging up the skates and picking up the clipboard, joining Dan Muse's staff for this upcoming season. They dive into their thoughts about the hire, what he brings to the organization, and if it can work. Then, with the Penguins needing all the help they can get on defense, they weigh the pros and cons of potentially offering a contract to UFA defenseman Vladislav Gavrikov. Finally, the Florida Panthers join the Penguins as a team to win back-to-back Stanley Cups in the salary cap era. They give their thoughts on the Stanley Cup Final, why Florida was able to win, and what the Oilers have to do next.

Hunter and Patrick begin the Tuesday edition of Locked On Penguins, talking about how it's no surprise that Crosby was one of the first six players named and how this might be his final Olympic Games as a player. Then, they look at the rest of the first six rosters and how this can be one of the best Olympic hockey tournaments of all time. Last summer, the Penguins surprised everyone by acquiring Ruter McGroarty; this summer, they have a chance to do something similar. Patrick and Hunter begin the Monday edition by discussing why the Pengins should be interested in Tampa Bay prospect, and Hobey Baker winner, Isaac Howard. They get into what it would cost, how Howard would fit into the Penguins' system, and why he is exactly the type of young player that they need. Then, over the weekend, the Penguins announced they had signed 19-year-old Melvin Fernstrom to a three-year, entry-level deal and re-signed forward Boko Imama. This leads to a discussion of why Imama is a good vibes guy and what Fernstrom's ceiling is as a prospect. Finally, it's been reported that this will be Evgeni Malkin's final year with the Penguins...maybe. They get into what the future could hold for the Penguins' great.
