Locked On Penguins - Daily Podcast On The Pittsburgh Penguins

The Penguins have quite a few needs this offseason, chief among them is defense, and there's a Western Conference team that could help. Patrick and Hunter open the show by talking about defensemen, who the Penguins could or should have an interest in this off-season to upgrade their blue line. First, they talk about Nicholas Hague, who is reportedly on the trade block in Vegas and would be a good fit for both the present and the future. Then they discuss a couple of names, including Ryan Lindgren and K'Andre Miller, and whether or not they're worth a phone call. Next, Mike Vellucci moved on to Chicago, but his exit left some questions about the penalty kill. Was he responsible for the struggles of the past couple of years, or was it the personnel? Finally, they end the show discussing the future of two young goaltenders in the system, Sergei Murashov and Joel Blomqvist. Both have bright futures, but patience will be necessary in their development.

Kyle Dubas's self-imposed June 1 deadline to hire a coach has come and gone without a hire, now the pressure is on. Patrick and Hunter begin this episode discussing how, with the deadline to hire a coach behind us, it becomes even more of a consequential hire. Dubas now has to absolutely get this right, considering his plan to transition this team into its next era. After that, they talk about Russian forward Mikhail Ilyin signing his entry-level contract and how this could be another late-round gem for the Penguins. Finally, the season in review series continues as they look at the impact Danton Heinen has had on the team in both of his stints.

For the first time since 2008-2009, we've got a repeat Stanley Cup Final, so let's remember when the Penguins and Red Wings put on an epic two years! Patrick begins the episode talking about how, for the first time since 2008-2009, we've got a Stanley Cup Final rematch. He draws on the parallels between the 2009 Penguins and Red Wings and the 2025 Florida Panthers and Edmonton Oilers. Then, some reports have come out that DJ Smith is still in the mix for the Penguins' head coaching job. He dives into how this would be a misguided hire, but how Smith may be pitching himself to the franchise. Finally, Fan Take Friday returns, and Locked On Penguins listeners delivered. We talk about Jake Guentzel, free agency, trade ideas, and more!

Bryan Rust's no-trade clause expires on July 1, so should the Penguins explore a trade? Hunter and Patrick start the show discussing a potential Bryan Rust trade and whether or not it's worth it for the franchise. They talk about how, while he may be a fan and locker room favorite, a trade could bring them a windfall, but would that help the retooling? Then, they take a look at the small sample size from defenseman Vladislav Kolyachonok and what they need to see from him next season. Finally, it was announced on Thursday that Sidney Crosby will be one of the subjects of season two of Faceoff: Inside The NHL.

We've talked a lot about the Penguins being in transition, rebuilding, retooling, whatever, but what does success actually look like? Patrick opens the show discussing what the timeline could and should look like for Kyle Dubas and the Penguins to get out of this transitional period and back into not just the playoff picture, but Stanley Cup contention. Then, while pending UFA Mitch Marner hasn't been directly linked to the Penguins, it's pretty easy to see a connection between the two. However, despite the previous relationships and Marner's talents, the Penguins would be wise to say thanks, but no thanks. Finally, a quick update on the coaching search and how it appears to be down to three candidates, with one of them not looking like much of a fit.

As the Penguins continue with an eye toward the future, they're reportedly looking into a pretty talented Russian free agent. Patrick and Hunter discuss the reports that the Penguins are in the running to sign KHL star Maxim Shabonov. They dive into his numbers, his tape, and why the Penguins might actually be a desirable location for the KHL forward. Then, they bring you the latest on the Penguins' coaching search, including how one candidate stands out above the rest. Finally, with the conference finals winding down, they give their thoughts on the two series so far.

As the Penguins look to get younger and kick-start this retooling on the fly, one RFA center from the Western Conference is reportedly available, so how can they get him? Patrick and Hunter are once again joined by Kelsey Surmacz of The Hockey News and they begin the show discussing the seasons of Connor Dewar and Conor Timmins and why it might not be the worst idea to just let them walk. Then, they get into some of the young players in the Penguins system, and who Kelsey thinks are ready to take that next step going into next year. Finally, Marco Rossi of the Minnesota Wild is believed to be available, so what would it take for the Penguins to bring him to Pittsburgh?
