Locked On Penguins - Daily Podcast On The Pittsburgh Penguins

The NHL Draft Lottery is over and Hunter has much to say about it. He starts with the not-surprising news that the Pittsburgh Penguins got the No. 14 pick before touching on the team's options. Hunter goes over what he would do with the pick if he was the GM but also plays devil's advocate since this class is shaping up to be a damn good one. He then discusses the lottery as a whole and why he feels a bit icky about the Chicago Blackhawks getting the top overall pick. He also feels horrible for the Ducks as this is the second time they have lost a draft lottery this generation. After that, he reviews Josh Archibald's season and why his defensive impacts were substantial but that it didn't translate over offensively. He looks at how he struggled after coming back from his injury and what he would do when it comes to bringing him back or not. Finally, Hunter brings up an interesting candidate to replace Jason Zucker if the Penguins are unable to bring him back.

Happy Draft Lottery Day! Isn't it crazy that the Penguins have a small shot at getting a top 5 pick in this year's draft? Hunter starts the show with that as the Penguins will have a great opportunity to land a franchise-caliber player if the odds somehow go in their favor. He brings up the talent that is likely going to go in the top 5 and why they're arguably better than anyone that went in last year's draft. He gives his scouting reports on a few players, namely Leo Carlsson, Matvei Michkov, and Will Smith, and looks at who he would pick if he was the GM if the odds went in their favor. He then goes into how the Penguins should trade the pick if the likeliest scenario happens and they just stay at No. 14 overall. He discusses why it could be valuable to teams that have players they want to give up and how the Penguins could get a young forward, top-four defenseman, or a goaltender if the package that pick with other assets. After that, Hunter reviews Mikael Granlund's season and how he never was fit with this team. He looks at how the Penguins will have no choice but to move on because of his cap hit before ending the show with a discussion about Kyle Dubas and the pros and cons of hiring him if he becomes available.

Happy Cinco de Mayo! Hunter starts the show off by getting into the latest on the GM search from multiple outlets and how the Penguins seem to be starting some interviews. He looks at how Steve Greeley has reportedly been interviewed and how many people the team plans to interview during the first round of interviews. Is the team waiting for anyone's season to end? Hunter also looks at that part since there are only eight teams left and some feature some people that are likely high up on their list. When is the timeframe for this? Hunter gives his best shot at answering that since it's already been three weeks since Chris Pryor, Ron Hextall, and Brian Burke were relieved of their duties. After that, it's time for Danton Heinen's season in review! He discusses why Heinen regressed this season and why he was in Mike Sullivan's doghouse after a career year in 2021-22. He also gives his thoughts on whether the team should re-sign him or go in a different direction before ending the show with more playoff talk.

Happy Star Wars Day! In honor of that, Hunter first discusses one of the Empire's most sinister agents...yes, Jeff Carter. Pretty good, no? Huner goes over Carter's season in review as it was an absolute mess. He dives into the numbers and how his counting stats would maybe look OK if he were a fourth-line center for every game but that's not what the Penguins are paying him to be. Hunter looks at how these numbers are probably what you can expect from him again next season unless he gets even more washed. He also pleads for Mike Sullivan to stop using him in high-leverage situations since Carter is not cut out for that. He's not Patrice Bergeron or Anze Kopitar and never has been! Hunter also argues that the Penguins need a true third-line center for next season and beyond since Carter can't handle those duties anymore, either. After that, Hunter looks at some players who could bounce back for the Penguins next season even though the list isn't very long. Finally, he discusses another option in goal that the team could look at, especially if he comes out of the players' assistance program like Jakub Vrana did. All of that, plus much more is on this episode of Locked On Penguins.

It's the day before National Star Wars Day and you want to talk Pittsburgh Penguins hockey? Hunter jokes of course, but still, Thursday will be a fun day to celebrate that amazing franchise. Hunter starts the show off by discussing Drew O'Connor's season and why he showed that he belonged. His development has been great to see over the past couple of years and it seems to finally be paying off for him. Hunter dives into the numbers, which are favorable for DOC even though he played limited minutes. He even discusses how he has improved defensively before looking at what contract he should get since he's an RFA for next season. Also: Should he be guaranteed a spot in the bottom six? Hunter answers that before flipping over to what the new GM should do RIGHT WHEN he/she gets the job. Is it a trade? Is it figuring out the coaching staff? Bringing in a quality front office? Signing Jason Zucker? Well, you'll have to tune in to find out! All of that, plus a playoff update is on this episode of the Locked On Penguins podcast.

The season reviews continue on Tuesday with Jason Zucker. He's the last player in the top six who hasn't gotten one so Hunter had to save the best for last. He looks at how this was his best season in quite some time, especially counting stats-wise. He marvels at how 25 of Zucker's 27 goals came at 5v5, which is no small feat. Only two came on the power play! He discusses how great of a fit he was on Evgeni Malkin's line and why he was always there when the team needed him most. He then looks at Zucker's underlyings and how they matched the eye test in a big way. Finally, Hunter gives his opinion on what a contract for Zucker should look like and what the Penguins should set in terms of a boundary. After that, he goes more in-depth on the re-signing of Alex Nylander and why he's going to be given every shot imaginable to make the team next season. He then discusses a couple of players in WBS making the move overseas before finishing the show with a thought on Monday night's Game 7 and why the Penguins could be in line to make a move on the Rangers next season if they make some major changes.

It's a new month but the hockey content doesn't stop there. As Promised, Hunter is joined by Danny Shirey for this special episode of Locked On Penguins as they touch on everything regarding the Penguins' offseason. They start with the GM search and if there's any update regarding that since it's been over two weeks since the firings. They then pivot to the goaltending and discuss why Connor Hellebuyck seems like a slam-dunk acquisition for the Penguins if he is made available. They at least have to call, right? Hunter then gets Danny's thoughts on a new LHD for the defense and gets his opinion on whether the Penguins should wait to extend Jake Guentzel. Danny then gives his take on the Jason Zucker conundrum and whether the Penguins should sign him back. They also discuss the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs and what caught their eyes before ending the show. All that, plus much more is on this episode of Locked On Penguins.

You knew Hunter wasn't going to leave you hanging, right? He starts the show by continuing his season reviews with Bryan Rust and how a lot of it was bad luck. Hunter looks at some stats from Natural Stat Trick and shows that his PP stats were uncharacteristically bad. He also looks at how the process seemed to be there at times but that he wasn't getting rewarded. If you then switch over to his 5v5 numbers, the process was more there but he just couldn't finish. Will that improve in 2023-24? is Hunter concerned about his contract? After that, Hunter discusses another goaltender option for the Penguins after a team got eliminated recently. What would a trade package look like? Is it feasible? Finally, he does another recap of the Stanley Cup Playoffs as these games continue to be so much fun to watch.

Happy Thursday! Well, Friday, but who is counting, right? To start the show, Hunter continues his player season reviews with Jake Guentzel. He discusses how he maybe didn't have the season that some expected him to have but that it was still very good. After all, 36 goals and 73 points is AWESOME for top-line production. He looks at how Guentzel could be better next season on the power play since he didn't have as many PPGs this season compared to last season and also ponders whether the Penguins will start to discuss an extension with him. What does that kind of contract look like? Could the Penguins also listen to trade talks for him if someone comes calling, If he does stay, what kind of expectations does Hunter have for him? After that, he gets into some mailbag questions, including one about Troy Terry and who the Penguins' top rival is right now. Finally, he ends the show with some Stanley Cup playoff talk as we finally have one team who has advanced to the second round.

Happy Wednesday! The episodes continue as Hunter starts the show with a small update on the GM search. Well, it's an update in the sense that he doubts Marc Bergevin will be considered for the role. Hunter discusses what Elliotte Friedman talked about towards the end of his 32 Thoughts Pod and why it seems like it's just an agent helping out a client. After that, he breaks down Rickard Rakell's season and how he surprised Hunter in numerous ways this year. Hunter eats all the crow as he was against part of the extension due to the term but it quickly went away with how he played. He looks at how Rakell struck gold on any line that he was on and how that will be a big factor heading into next season. He also marvels at how great of a one-timer he has and why the power play should run through him a bit more next season thanks to his shot and his vision from the left half wall. After that, Hunter gives a couple of more moves that he would make if he were the general manager this summer. Which d-men does he have his eyes on? What about forwards for the bottom six? Finally, Hunter breaks down Tuesday night's playoff action and why this first round has been an absolute pleasure to watch.
