Locked On Penguins - Daily Podcast On The Pittsburgh Penguins

Happy Tuesday! Hunter starts the show off with a new series: Hunter as Mock GM! Hunter goes through a couple of moves that he would make for this offseason if he were the GM as he's going to continue that for the rest of this week and into next week. What's the first order of business? What goaltender does he really want to go after? He answers both of those questions before pivoting to Evgeni Malkin's season in review. Hunter starts out by feeling relieved that he was able to play the full season before discussing how Geno proved a lot of people wrong. He discusses how his offense is still elite even though his defensive metrics have gone down (that's expected). He also analyzes how Geno isn't just a PP specialist as other people have said he is before discussing what expectations should be for him in 2023-24. Finally, he recaps a crazy Monday of the Stanley Cup Playoffs and what to expect on Tuesday and Wednesday for the games.

Happy Monday! The Stanley Cup Playoffs continue to roll along and so does the Locked On Penguins podcast. Hunter starts Monday's show with rumors about John Gibson that surfaced over the weekend and why it's nothing to worry about since the Penguins don't even have a GM right now. He then discusses why he wouldn't make sense to trade for if the new regime were somehow interested in him. He looks at his contract, along with his numbers, and discusses why he would be a worse option than even Tristan Jarry, who is set to be a free agent when July comes around. He then finishes by giving a potential option that would be much better, (thanks to a YouTube commenter) before going to Sidney Crosby's season review. He looks at how he continues to turn back time and did all he could to carry the Penguins into the playoffs. Will he get top 10 votes for the Hart Trophy? What should expectations for him be next season? Finally, he ends the show with a discussion about how the two wild card series in the East are going as he expected them to (and no, the Penguins would not be doing any better), before discussing the other series.

The second episode of Friday is finally here! Hunter is joined by Jesse Marshall to touch on all things Pittsburgh Penguins and they first start with the GM search. Who are Jesse's top options to replace Ron Hextall? Is he high on Kyle Dubas while others are not? What kind of GM does Jesse want running the team moving forward? The two also discuss whether a woman could be joining the front office as the time is almost here for a woman to be the first full-time general manager in NHL history. After that, the two analyze what the Penguins need to do this offseason to be a playoff team again next season. What's at the top of Jesse's list? Does he think the Penguins need to start over in goal? Is buying out Mikael Granlund pretty easy? What would he do about Jeff Petry? He tries to answer all of those questions before the show ends with the two discussing the Stanley Cup Playoffs so far and which series have caught their attention. All of that, plus much more, is on this episode of Locked On Penguins.

I know, it's a day late but you guys are getting double trouble on this one. Hunter starts this episode by going into his first main reason for hope and optimism next season and of course, it surrounds the core. Can Sid and Geno play all 82 games next season? If they don't, will they still have strong production? Hunter also discusses why Kris Letang is set to be even better after he went through hell and back this season. He also looks at Rickard Rakell, why his production should stay the same for next season, and why Jake Guentzel will continue to be one of the top goal-scorers in the league. With these players, you always have a shot. In the second segment, he analyzes why a new management staff can't be worse than the last one. Right?! He again discusses who FSG could look at and why the new management staff should have an easier time making harder decisions since they won't have any loyalty to these players. They also can't be worse than Hextall and Co. Finally, Hunter goes into why Mike Sullivan may tinker with his system and why there's no chance the Penguins will blow upwards of 20 leads in the third period. All of that, plus an injury update on Jan Rutta, is on this episode of the Locked On Penguins podcast.

Happy Wednesday! We're still rocking and rolling here and Hunter starts the show by discussing the main reason why the Pittsburgh Penguins just couldn't get it going this season. He looks at how the Jekyll & Hyde aspect was too much to overcome and why it felt like the Penguins would get up for some games but also decide to not fully play in other games. After that, he dives into the finishing problem that the Penguins had and why a good chunk of it comes down to poor roster construction. Even so, he looks at how there was a stark difference between the top six and the rest of the lineup. Hunter pleads for the new management to add more pure finishers to the lineup so that they can take the pressure off the core players next season while also making an argument for the defensive core to be more involved next season. Finally, Hunter looks at why the Penguins could never get a timely save when they needed to from their goalies and why that really doomed them as the season went on. All of that, plus much more is on this episode of Locked On Penguins.

It's Day Two of the Stanley Cup Playoffs and the Pittsburgh Penguins are still sadly not in it. Sad! Hunter starts the show by going over a few Penguins-centric items from Elliotte Friedman's 32 Thoughts on Monday. He discusses how the Penguins are continuing to discuss building out their analytics department and who they could get from other teams that Elliotte mentions. He also looks at a funny but sad ROn Hextall story that Elliotte wrote about and why the Penguins' front office will need to be more in sync for next season and years to come. What about those JT Miller talks? Hunter provides an update on those courtesy of Friedman and why Hextall actually got it right when it comes to not giving up what Vancouver wanted. Hunter then gives his ideal contract for Jason Zucker before analyzing what the top priorities for this team should be over the next several months. Do they need to totally restart at goalie? Does Kris Letang need a new partner for next season? Hunter also analyzes what the Penguins should do with Mikael Granlund before discussing the bottom six as a whole and why it needs to be revamped. What kinds of players should new management target for those roles? All of that, plus how awesome Monday night was is on this episode of Locked On Penguins.

Happy Monday, or as Hunter says, the first day without Penguins playoff hockey in a long time. Hunter starts the show by going over the latest updates when it comes to the GM search. Is Eric Tulsky an early favorite for the gig? Could the Penguins be looking at some former alumni for the gig? He also touches on the latest rumor regarding Stan Bowman and why the Penguins should stay FAR away from him for multiple reasons. Hunter also isn't sure how much he buys it because it goes against what Fenway Sports Group is likely looking at for this gig. Hunter also looks at Rob Rossi's early list and why that one aligns more with FSG's current thinking based on the comments made during the press conference. After that, Hunter discusses locker room clean-out day and why it was obviously a somber day. He looks at why Kris Letang will be primed for vengeance next season after going through so much off-the-ice stuff this past season. He also analyzes why the Penguins will likely be stuck with Jeff Carter next season based on his comments to Matt Vensel and why they NEED to go after a top-four defenseman to replace Brian Dumoulin, whether it's via a trade or free agency. All of that, plus Hunter's playoff picks, are in this episode of the Locked On Penguins podcast.

Hunter has a special treat for Yinz on Friday as the Pittsburgh Penguins cut bait with Ron Hextall, Brian Burke, and Chris Pryor on Friday morning! He looks at how this was a long time coming for the Penguins as they weren't getting the job done at all. He also discusses why the Fenway Sports Group sounded very confident in getting this right and why to maybe not judge a book based on its cover when it comes to their ownership. He also looks at the type of candidate that FSG said it's looking for to run the hockey ops department and why it's likely going to be one that embraces analytics since the team is planning on building an analytics department soon. Finally, Hunter discusses what this means for Mike Sullivan before going over his own shortlist of candidates for the position.

Well, the regular season is finally over, guys! We did it! To start the show, Hunter dives into a couple of scoops for what to expect on Friday as the Pittsburgh Penguins are about to shake up their front office in a big way. Hunter goes into what he's heard about the Hextall and Burke situations and why Friday will likely be the day they get released. He analyzes why it's been a long time coming and who Fenway Sports Group could be looking at to fill their roles. He also dives into Elliotte Friedman's report about the Penguins wanting to build out their analytics staff and why that's very on-brand for FSG. After that, Hunter recaps the Penguins' 3-2 loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets and how nobody seemed to want to be there. He does paise Kris Letang and Jake Guentzel for their goals as they ended the season on a high note before looking at why they blew their 20th third-period lead of the season. Yes, it means nothing but it's still crazy that this is the case. He discusses how Letang might be even better next season after how much he went through before giving his opinion on what he would do about Tristan Jarry. Finally, Hunter looks at how there could be a lot of on-ice changes coming this season and why this team can still be set up to compete if the right moves are made.

What in the HECK was that? Hunter starts the show off by being completely stunned at what happened on Tuesday night and why everyone failed to show up, outside of 87 & 71. He goes into how the Penguins played their latest hits yet again in a loss to the Chicago Blackhawks. He slams them for still not being able to finish any of their chances as this has been a theme all season while also discussing why Tristan Jarry can't be this team's starting goaltender for next season. He also looks at how there was no depth scoring yet again as that has plagued them ever since Ron Hextall took over as the general manager. He also sends a message to fans that think that this is "because they brought the band together" as those people can't see the forest for the trees. After that, Hunter analyzes why it's time to fire Hextall as soon as this miserable season comes to an end and how the next GM that comes in is going to have a tough time with the mess that he has left behind. He then brings up Mike Sullivan and questions whether he can survive this, even though he just signed an extension last year (and it hasn't even kicked in yet). Finally, he has the final game preview for the season as the Penguins will take on the Blue Jackets on Thursday night. Will it even matter? All that, plus much more is on this episode of Locked On Penguins.
