Locked On SEC – Daily College Football & Basketball Podcast

On today's show, we discuss the Preseason Coaches Poll and break down the SEC teams they have ranked inside the Top 25 - of course Georgia is the preseason #1 team, but do they want to be? History hasn't been forgiving for the preseason top team. We also break down Texas and Alabama falling in the top 5. Is Ole Miss too low at #6? Mizzou is at #11 but has a case to have been a top 10 team. Meanwhile, LSU, Tennessee, Oklahoma, and Texas A&M round out the top 20. What other SEC teams were in the "others receiving votes" category?

And we bring you our interview with Head of SEC Officiating John McDaid as he discusses the work that goes into refereeing for SEC football games. We find out how the league will treat "horns down" when it comes to a penalty with Texas joining the league. And we ask the ever important question "Can holding be called on every play?"

In addition, we sit down with South Carolina defensive lineman Alex Huntley to find out how his summer has gone as the Gamecocks prepare for a big year under Shane Beamer.

On today's show, we hit on the biggest storylines from the past few days across the SEC, including:

• Tennessee football loses starting DB Jourdan Thomas for the season with a knee injury. Who will step in and play the Star position now for the Vols? How much does this hurt their title chances in 2024?
•  Kirby Smart and Georgia officially boot WR Rara Thomas off the team following his arrest for  cruelty to children-family violence.
• Florida starting RB Montrell Johnson undergoes arthroscopic knee surgery, however the team says he will be ready for the start of the season.
• Ole Miss adds another WR, this time in Utah State transfer Micah Davis. Can Davis help add to an already loaded Rebel WR room?
• Kentucky football gets 2-year probation over an NCAA settlement for an impermissible benefits case from '21 & '22.
• LSU returns DB Javen Toviano to the practice field, despite his recent arrest for charges of video voyeurism.
• Kalen DeBoer and Alabama are getting their young DB's plenty of early reps in fall camp.
• Auburn picks up a huge in-state commitment from DE Jared Smith as they dominate the state of Alabama in their 2025 class.
• Tennessee picks up #1 QB Faizon Brandon in the class of 2026.
• Georgia adds a big time OL for their class of 2025 in Juan Gaston.

And Peter Burns from the SEC Network joins the show as we discuss some offseason topics with him, and we play "Where Are They Now?" with Peter as we see if he knows where former SEC players transferred to this offseason inside of the conference.

On today's show, we dive into Fall Camp officially getting underway across the SEC. What are some of the biggest stories to watch after the day for practice for many SEC teams?

We start with Alabama as Kalen DeBoer welcomes back OT Kadyn Proctor, while the RBs battle it out and Kane Wommack wears a sweatshirt it the Tuscaloosa heat. The Texas Longhorns welcome WR Silas Bolden to the mix as Steve Sarkisian hopes for his receivers to be as productive as last season. Tennessee gets underway as Josh Heupel has high praise for WR Bru McCoy. Arkansas sees a big play on Day 1 from WR Tyrone Broden connecting with Taylen Green. Florida starts Year 3 under Billy Napier as their linebackers are back healthy in Shemar James and Derek Wingo.

At Mizzou, new DC Corey Batoon wants his defense to be a "Death Row Defense". Kentucky is already see explosiveness from QB Brock Vandagriff to WR Barion Brown. Ole Miss sounds like they will be welcoming in WR Deion Smith after all, while they also took for RB production following the exit of Quinshon Judkins. Texas A&M has offensive weapons everywhere, with tight ends Tre Watson and Donovan Green healthy and ready to go. Vanderbilt has a QB battle on their hands between Nate Johnson and Diego Pavia.

Other schools getting underway today and tomorrow - the Georgia Bulldogs with high hopes of a 3rd championship in 4 seasons, but who will step up in the secondary, perhaps it will be the true freshman KJ Bolden. At Auburn, Hugh Freeze may give RBs Jarquez Hunter and Damari Alston a break to start camp, so watch out for second-year back Jeremiah Cobb. LSU really needs some defensive backs to step up, and it could be Ashton Stamps alongside PJ Woodland. Oklahoma looks to get aggressive under new DC Zac Alley. Jeff Lebby and Mississippi State will look to go running back by committee. And South Carolina will hit the field on Friday - they need some WRs to emerge.

On today's show, we discuss the latest turmoil with the Georgia Bulldogs following another offseason arrest, this time with wide receiver Rara Thomas on battery & cruelty to children charges. In addition, according to the Athens Banner-Herald, Georgia has had at least 29 arrests or citations for speeding, reckless driving or racing since the crash that killed a player just a year and a half ago. Kirby Smart says he's addressed these issues with his team - so why do players continue to get into trouble? Should more suspensions help the cause? Kicking guys off the team? A stronger message needs to be sent in Athens.

Also, we bring you two more of our player interviews from SEC Media Days, as you'll hear from LSU tight end Mason Taylor as he heads into his junior season and will adjust to a new QB throwing him the football in Garrett Nussmeier. We know how much Brian Kelly likes to use his tight ends - is Taylor set for a monster year at LSU in 2024?

And we sit down with Kentucky linebacker D'Eryk Jackson who figures to be a big part of that Mark Stoops' defense this season. But how much better can Kentucky be this season with all their transfer additions? We discuss all of that with Jackson as the Wildcats hope to pull off some upsets this season.

We run through all 16 teams and where they're expected to finish, and some of the big names to make the SEC Preseason First Team Offense and Defense.

Also, we bring you more of our interviews from SEC Media Days including our conversation with Kentucky head coach Mark Stoops, Wildcats offensive lineman Marques Cox who is back for another season, as well as Arkansas defensive lineman Landon Jackson.
