Locked On SEC – Daily College Football & Basketball Podcast

On today's show, we officially welcome Oklahoma to the SEC as the Sooners had a huge on campus celebration on Monday as the former Big12 team made the move over to the Southeastern Conference. Highlights from the SEC Network coverage as OU Athletic Director Joe Castiglione took an opportunity to take a shot at former head football coach Lincoln Riley, insinuating he was scared to coach in the SEC. The Sooners also picked up a 2025 WR in Cortez Mills.

And we caught up with OU QB Jackson Arnold over the weekend at the Manning Passing Academy, as we bring you our interview with him discussing taking over as the starting QB this season, what makes OU SEC-ready, a very talented WR room, and what makes this OU defense so good.

Lastly, we touch on SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey's comments regarding the "Horns Down" gesture and asked if it will be a penalty in the SEC next year. And we get you some recruiting updates from Alabama, Texas A&M and Tennessee. And Texas A&M makes it official with their new head baseball coach.

Bud Elliott's "Blue-Chip Ratio" for 2024 is out, as he lists 16 teams that can win the National Championship this year based on his Blue Chip Ratio, which evaluates how many blue chip recruits teams have signed over their past four recruiting classes. Based on which teams have won the National Championship every year, only teams that make this list actually go on to win the championship at the end of the season. Which teams from the SEC made this year's cut?

Also, with the EA Sports College Football game coming out soon, we run through their Offense and Defense overall team rankings that came out this week. You may be surprised by some of those rankings as both Alabama and Georgia rank near the top in both. But LSU and Florida with defenses ranked in the top 25?

And we find out what Nick Saban is making as an employee of the University of Alabama now, and some recruiting tidbits from a few teams.

After comments on postgame Monday night where he said emphatically denied that he was leaving Texas A&M baseball, taking a reporter to task. And in less than 24 hours, Schloss would indeed leave for Texas, as the Longhorns sent out a press release announcing the news on Tuesday evening.

On today's show, we react to the news from Friday as Oklahoma Sooners head coach Brent Venables got a contract extension that will keep him in Norman through 2029. The six-year contract will pay the 53-year old Venables $51.6 million, an average of $8.5 million per year. But why did they do this NOW, before he even coaches a game in the SEC? We run through several theories including an extension to continue to help recruiting because of "job security", and the motivation to have him continue to get the Oklahoma defense back to their days of dominance and cranking out of NFL defensive linemen.

Also, we recap a busy weekend of recruiting in the SEC, as Auburn swiped a running back commit from Penn State in Alvin Henderson, Brian Kelly and LSU added to their class with edge LaJesse Harrold and offensive lineman Carius Curne, while Mizzou added cornerback Mark Manfred, Mississippi State added a trio of players, Florida got a tight end in Micah Jones and much more.

In addition, we discuss two exciting games in the College World Series as Texas A&M took Game 1 9-5, while Tennessee responded back in Game 2, winning 4-1. A decisive Game 3 happens tonight in Omaha, as the SEC will celebrate yet another National Championship.

It is hype season across the SEC and college football, so as we are joined by our buddy Chris Marler, we debut a segment called "Chill The Hell Out", as we talk about teams that folks are maybe TOO high on this offseason. Gordy makes a case for the Texas Longhorns getting too much hype as many pundits are putting them with Georgia as the two best teams in the SEC in 2024. Marler gives his thoughts on the Longhorns as well as they make their debut season in the SEC.

Is Ole Miss getting too much hype this offseason? Are expectations TOO high on Lane Kiffin in 2024 as they're being billed as "Championship or Bust." Marler makes a case for Missouri to perhaps take a step back from last season. Marler also thinks that Alabama could be being over-hyped in 2024, as Kalen DeBoer tries to settle into his new gig and coaching in a brutally tough conference with a very difficult schedule.

Lastly, we take a look at a few teams that may be under-hyped, meaning nobody is talking about them or expecting very much from them. Gordy makes a case for Arkansas, not to be a playoff team, but perhaps to win 8 or 9 games this year with Bobby Petrino and Taylen Green. Marler says he likes Tennessee as a playoff team, led by Nico Iamaleava who is surrounded by offensive weapons. Marler also likes Texas A&M as a team that could be flying under that radar and could surprise this season if Conner Weigman plays well, and Kentucky with all the portal weapons they brought in including QB Brock Vandagriff.

What do you think? Agree or Disagree?

On today's show, we're talking all things SEC recruiting with our Locked On Recruiting Insider Brian Smith, as we discuss the recent trends in recruiting, including players getting paid NIL dollars just for a VISIT, as opposed to an actual commitment.

We also touch on some of the schools filling up their classes like Alabama as they have 17 commitments already after adding 4-star OL Jackson Lloyd and 4-star CB Chuck McDonald, while Georgia added to their class with 5-star LB Zayden Walker and 4-star WR Taylyn Taylor.

Can Auburn steal stud QB Julian Lewis away from USC? We get Brian's thoughts on that. Is WR Dakorien Moore still in play for LSU? And which programs in the SEC have the most work to do still in recruiting their Class of 2025? How does Florida and Billy Napier only have FIVE commits currently?

On today's show, we're joined by Auburn defensive lineman Jayson Jones as we talk with him about his offseason, and expectations for the Auburn Tigers in 2024? Jones talks about the new defensive coordinator in DJ Durkin and how he can be a difference-maker on the Plains this year as he brings a more aggressive mindset, combined with more depth on defense.

Jones also talks about the Auburn offense and how they improved throughout the spring, with the guys playing more "together" when it comes to the receivers and weapons with the quarterbacks including Payton Thorne. Jones also gives his thoughts on Hugh Freeze as a head coach and what he likes about him.

We also get Jones' thoughts on how the schedule shapes up for Auburn in 2024, and what the mentality is with the team heading into a new season.

On today's show, we discuss the news that Les Miles has filed a lawsuit against LSU and others for his 37 vacated wins that dropped his win percentage below .600, thus making him ineligible for the College Football Hall of Fame. For the record, vacating wins is silly, and does nothing to take away from the memory of the wins. But is Les Miles a Hall Of Famer? And can we make a case for Les Miles and not Mike Leach? Worth noting Miles' vacated wins pertains to a former o-lineman who took improper benefits from a booster, but should Miles' loss of wins over multiple season be the ultimate punishment?

We also get you an SEC recruiting Roundup as several players have committed to the class of 2025 like Mizzou ATH Jamarion Morrow, Auburn safety Eric Winters, Ole Miss DL Andrew Maddox and Alabama DL London Simmons; and a few for the Class of 2026 as Texas adds QB Dia Bell and Florida adds CB Jaelen Waters.

In addition, we run through On3's Top 5 SEC Heisman Hopefuls for 2024, and they all happen to be quarterbacks. But the rankings might be a bit mixed up.
