Locked On Sharks - Daily Podcast On The San Jose Sharks

The Edmonton Oilers are in Cup or Bust mode as long as they have two of the best players in the league, Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl. Tyler Yaremchuk of The Daily Faceoff and Oilers Nation joins for the state of the franchise. We discuss why this team will be in Cup or Bust mode for the foreseeable future and if Tyler is starting to worry that McDavid and Draisaitl will become this generation's Joe Thornton and Patrick Marleau. Next, we analyze their offseason, including drafting Beau Akey and how the goaltending will shake out between Stuart Skinner and Jack Campbell. Finally, Tyler gives his worst and best-case scenarios for the Oilers this year, why Darnell Nurse is so important, and where the Oilers finish in the Pacific.

The Sharks had one of their worst seasons in franchise history last year. Will this year be better or worse? Start by making a case for why the 2023-24 San Jose Sharks will be worse than they were last year, including the lack of superstars after Timo Meier and Erik Karlsson were traded away, huge questions in goaltending, and a better Pacific Division. Next, why the Sharks could be better this year thanks to much better depth with the additions of Anthony Duclair, Mikael Granlund, and Filip Zadina. William Eklund playing a full season with veteran players, and just better luck could lead the Sharks to having a better record this year. Finally, why everything will probably balance out and this season could be very similar to last year in terms of points and where that should put the Sharks in the standings.

Mike Grier has been very hesitant to give out a big contract since arriving in San Jose. Who could be the first player to get a large contract for the San Jose Sharks? Start by looking at all the players who are on expiring contracts this season and why most don't make sense to earn a big deal except two. Then, suppose Grier wants to be aggressive in the offseason. Which players could be available in free agency, including Bay Area native Auston Matthews, super Swede William Nylander, and an early look at what the top of the 2024 free agency class (13:00)? Finally, which of the Shark prospects could earn long-term deals in the future, and why it's better to pay players like William Eklund and Will Smith sooner rather than later (20:00)?

Now that the dust has settled from the Erik Karlsson trade, it's time to revisit the original trade that brought him to the San Jose Sharks and the decisions surrounding circumstances that led to the original trade pieces, including the Evander Kane trade and re-signing, and how the pursuit of John Tavares in the summer of 2018 eventually compelled the Sharks to acquire Karlsson and reward him with a new contract. Then, a look at his legacy in San Jose and how many fans will always have a polarizing view of Karlsson and a "yeah, but" attitude toward him despite his production (14:00). Finally, a crack at what the opening night lines could look like with the additions of Mike Hoffman, Mikael Granlund, and Jan Rutta (21:00).
