Locked On Sharks - Daily Podcast On The San Jose Sharks

The San Jose Sharks signed former Detroit Red Wings winger Filip Zadina. I discuss why this is the perfect low-risk, high-reward signing for Mike Grier and look at Filip Zadina's stats and analytics. Next, examine why Zadina didn't pan out in Detroit and why playing with Tomas Hertl and/or Logan Couture could give him the high-quality centers that he has yet to play with (10:00). Finally, projecting Zadina's role with the Sharks and how he can add some more depth on the power play. Plus, why he won't be traded at the deadline (19:00).

Nothing is better than overreacting to the San Jose Sharks prospect scrimmage as first-round picks Quentin Musty and Will Smith are impressive in their teal debut. Chat about which forwards stood out, including Alex Young and Ozzy Wiesblatt. Then how did Luca Cagnoni, Jake Furlong, Mattias Havelid, and Valtteri Pulli look on the blueline (10:00)? Plus, my thoughts on how Dylan Ernst, Mason Beaupit, Georgi Romanov, and Magnus Chrona looked in net and if Chrona has a slight edge heading into training camp (14:00). Finally, answer some questions, including where the Sharks' prospect pool rank in the NHL and where Filip Bystedt is playing this season (20:00).

Max Miller from The Hockey News joins for insight into what he has seen at San Jose Sharks development camp. We start with Will Smith and how fast he looks on the ice and his processing ability, and if Quentin Musty is a dark horse to play nine games in the NHL before heading back to the Sudbury Wolves. Next, the backup San Jose Barracuda goalie battle between Georgi Romanov and Magnus Chrona (12:00). Max also talks about Valtteri Pulli and his ability to protect the crease and Henry Thrun's earning the coaching staff's trust (15:00). Finally, some of the other standouts, including Ethan Cardwell and the decision the Sharks will have with Filip Bystedt this summer (20:00).

The old adage is that you can't judge a draft class until five years after. It's time to revisit the San Jose Sharks 2018 draft class and what lessons can be learned from a class that is no longer in the Sharks system. Also, make a "hindsight is 20/20" pick for each of the Sharks' picks and who would have been the best pick knowing what we know now. Start with the first-round pick, Ryan Merkley, and what went wrong for Merkley and how the Sharks can't ignore red flags going forward. Next, Linus Karlsson is shaping up to be a good prospect for the Vancouver Canucks, and why the Jonathan Dahlen trade was the Sharks trying to find a shortcut (11:00). Were the Sharks patient enough with Jasper Weatherby, or did they realize his potential (16:00)? Is there still a chance that Zachary Émond can turn into anything or is his lack of playing a sign (21:00)? Finally, is John Leonard the best pick in the back for the 2018 draft (24:00)?

The Detroit Red Wings placed former sixth-overall pick Filip Zadina on waivers on Monday. Mike Grier and the San Jose Sharks would be smart to claim Zadina. Examine why picking up Zadina is worth the risk despite the lack of NHL production and if some of the underlying numbers say that production is overdue. Then get to know the development camp roster, including the names and new jersey numbers of the forward group and expectations for players like Thomas Bordeleau, William Eklund, Will Smith, and Quentin Musty (12:00). Which defenseman will be fighting for AHL and NHL jobs, and why do Artem Guryev and Valtteri Pulli need to have a good camp (21:00)? And preview the upcoming Magnus Chrona and Georgi Romanov goalie battle (26:00).

With free agency off to a running start, what teams are still left in a position to try and acquire three-time Norris Trophy winner Erik Karlsson? Start with the Carolina Hurricanes and why they would be the most difficult to pull off the trade with their lack of a "bad" contract and little space. Why, despite being over the cap, the Pittsburgh Penguins could still make it work, and why the Seattle Kraken would be the easiest to make the trade. Next, the San Jose Sharks sent Artemi Kniazev to the Winnipeg Jets for Leon Gawanke. Analyze the trade, why a numbers game on the left side made it tough for Kniazev, and what the Sharks are getting from Gawanke (12:00). Finally, what does Mike Grier still have left to do, and why signing a cheap veteran center would make sense after trading Steven Lorentz over the weekend (20:00).

The first day of free agency is over, and Mike Grier and the San Jose Sharks had a very productive day. Start with their biggest move with the acquisition of forward Anthony Duclair from the Florida Panthers in exchange for Steven Lorentz and a 2025 5th rounder. Dive into what type of player Duclair is and why this was such a great move by Grier to take advantage of a cap-strapped team. Next, some of the re-signings, including Jacob Peterson, Eetu Mäkiniemi, Fabian Zetterlund, and Mackenzie Blackwood, and how all the contracts came in under expectations. Finally, get to know the newest Sharks and San Jose Barracuda players Kyle Burroughs, Givani Smith, Ryan Carpenter, and Scott Sabourin, and what their roles will be for San Jose next season.

The San Jose Sharks finished the second day of the NHL Draft by adding several new players to their prospect pool. Start with Finnish power forward Kasper Halttunen and his ability to rip a shot on the power play. Then get to know Brandon Svoboda from Youngstown of the USHL and why he could be a potential bottom-six center (7:00). Why the Sharks selecting Luca Cagnoni in the 4th is a bet on the potential for a player who was considered a second-rounder (12:00). Mike Grier also added some more physicality with Swedish defenseman Axel Landen from the HV71 (15:30) and a combination of physicality and scoring pop with Erik Pohlkamp (17:00). In the seventh round, David Klee (21:00) and Yegor Rimashevsky () are potential longterm flyers (23:00). Finally, my thoughts on the Sharks draft and my time in Nashville (25:00).

Mike Grier and the San Jose Sharks crushed the first round of the NHL Draft. I analyze the Will Smith pick and why the Sharks went Smith over Michkov, how Smith's stats and analytics project his career to look like, and a reasonable timetable for Smith to make his NHL debut. Then examine why Quentin Musty is the perfect swing for the Sharks with pick 26 and how his ceiling as a potential top-line forward is worth the constancy issues (11:00). Finally, some thoughts on the NHL Draft, including Mike Grier shutting down the narrative of not wanting skilled players and some of my favorite picks from day one (20:00).
