Locked On Stars - Daily Podcast On The Dallas Stars

Mason Marchment in his second season with the Dallas Stars is en route to a career year. On today's episode of Locked On Stars, Joey highlights the offensive numbers for Marchment and how they stack up against others on the Stars high powered offense. He's currently top five in points and ranks among the top in Expected Goals and Goals Per 60 while also being a physical presence. Not only is he on pace to break career highs in goals, assists and points, but he's drawn the most penalty minutes on the team by quite a margin. Like Tyler Seguin, he has certainly reaped the benefits of the Matt Duchene signing. The next topic revolves around tonight's game versus the Colorado Avalanche. The Avs are very top heavy, but with players like Nathan MacKinnon, Mikko Rantanen, and Cale Makar you can win a lot of games. This matchup is a huge test for the Stars at home coming off a game they should have been able to win if they did not surrender a three goal lead after scoring 11 seconds into the game. The final segment is another update on Jake Oettinger, who left his last start with a lower body injury on December 15. Head Coach Pete DeBoar changed the status from week-to-week, to day-to-day and stated that he is getting better every day. He has begun skating and doing more which is a great sign since Scott Wedgewood is going to make his 9th straight start. Otter is right around the corner and will hopefully be ready for this crucial stretch in the month of January.

Wyatt Johnston and Jason Robertson score with the extra attacker late as the Stars made a late push but fall to the Montreal Canadiens 4-3. The Canadiens best players, Nick Suzuki, Cole Caufield and Juraj Slafkovsky all had big nights to help Montreal snap a three game losing skid. On today's episode of Locked On Stars, the main takeaway from the loss it multi goal deficits. The Stars have been in that position too many times this season, in a game they should have won and we're clearly the better team they are unable to get points. Joey applauds the effort to even make it a one goal game, but at some point those deficits will catch up to you. Special teams was the deciding factor in the game, Caufiled's tally on the man advantage was the game winner and at the time extended the Canadiens lead to 4-1. The Stars had a chance to tie the game at two in the 2nd period, but came up empty in a key situation that has happened all too often. The final segment was the player of the game, Wyatt Johnston finally scored a goal after 16 games without one and picked up an assist on Jamie Benn's goal 11 seconds into the game. The monkey is off the back and hopefully will lead to bigger things, because when he's playing well the Stars are a tough team to beat.

Wyatt Johnston has gone 16 straight games without a goal, and just had four assists in the month of December. On today's episode of Locked On Stars, Joey answers the burning question how can the Stars get Wyatt Johnston to produce again? Johnston has not played bad by any means, some would say he has been unlucky with some of the chances he's had to score lately. Joey thinks the Stars need to think about breaking up his line involving Jamie Benn and Evgenii Dadanov. The trio has scored 8 goals at five on five this season, just 3 ahead of the fourth line which does not have the same amount of fire power, plus they rank as one of the worst lines in all of hockey in Goals per 60 minutes. Joey believes adding someone like Sam Steel to join Benn and Johnston could help them be more effective, since the whole line has not been as effective since December. We have more news on Jake Oettinger who is now skating, but Pete DeBoer said he is farther away then closer. Joey speculates the possible return for Otter and why they are going to be extra cautious in the next few weeks. We also talk about Nils Lundkvist, Pete DeBoer had an interesting answer on dealing with the double edged sword of development and managing an asset. To wrap things up, a preview of the Montreal Canadiens and Shooting Star!

The Dallas Stars blew out the Chicago Blackhawks by an 8-1 final on New Year's Eve. Mason Marchment had a hat trick in route to a four point night and completing back to back games for the Stars with hat tricks when Roope Hintz did it two nights prior. Tyler Seguin had 3 points and only three players left the game without a point for Dallas. On today's episode of Locked On Stars, Joey believes this is a glimpse of how great the Stars can be. Obviously, the Blackhawks are one of the bottom five teams in the league, but the dominating nature of the win makes him think this could be their potential. Included with that is the play of the defense, it's important that the Stars defensive core plays great in their own zone, but also produces offensively and December has show that. Miro Heiskanen had 15 points in the month, Thomas Harley had 11, Jani Hakanpaa and Esa Lindell are chipping in as well and with the personnel Dallas has currently, they must play this way to have ultimate success. The final segment is about 2024 resolutions for the Dallas Stars, the first two are obvious and certain ones that Joey has expressed before such as bringing in another right shot defensemen, bringing the goals against average down, but Joey really wants Jake Oettinger to be fully healthy. Otter has been skating, but its very important that Otter takes all the time he needs and is ready to return at full tilt. The Stars are winning and Scott Wedgewood has been more than impressive in his absence.

The Dallas Stars fall to the St. Louis Blues by the final score of 2-1 last night out of Christmas break. Jason Robertson scored the lone goal for Dallas off a pass from Roope Hintz. Scott Wedgewood was phenomenal especially on the penalty kill, but Joel Hofer for St. Louis made 39 saves to hand Dallas a lost. The show opens with Joey's main takeaways from the game which include the Stars were the better team for the majority of the contest, but once again fall into a two nothing hole. Eventually, it will catch up to you and it did last night even though they out-chanced the Blues 31-11 in the game. The game was open and not as physical as expected so both sides had good looks offensively and one goalie was just a bit better. The 2nd segment praises the incredible PK for the Stars that once again killed off an entire 2 minute 5 on 3 and double minor consecutively to keep them in the game heading into the 3rd period. Jani Hakanpaa and Esa Lindell have been outstanding as almost an exclusive duo on the penalty kill and went 4-for-4 yesterday. The final segment dissects a power play that has gone bone dry, they are now 0-for-16 and have not scored in five straight games. Their entries have been the main point of interest for Joey who speculates they've struggled to find open ice and generate off the rush as of late. They are getting shots through which is a silver lining, but are having trouble being connected as a unit most nights.

The Dallas Stars return from Christmas break tonight to face the St. Louis Blues on the road after a thrilling victory against Nashville last Saturday. On today's episode of Locked On Stars, Joey looks ahead at a 10 game stretch for the Dallas Stars that could be crucial for their chances to win the central division. Six out of the ten games are against teams not in the playoffs, seven out of ten are home games and nine of them are against central division opponents. The Stars have a 6-1-1 record in division and now have won four straight home games, currently tied for first with Colorado, the Stars can make a statement in the next 10 games and have a chance to solidify themselves at the top and hopefully get more out of players like Wyatt Johnston who have been goal less in the month. The next segment is an in depth look at the Blues and why it's so important for the Stars to match their physicality. Both meetings this season have gone to overtime and the rough and heavy style of the Blues has been apparent in the matchup this season. Jordan Binnington in net for the Blues has played well against the Stars in his career, but Jason Robertson is someone to look out for who has had his way with St. Louis in his young career. The final segment highlights Stars prospect Mavrik Bourque! Bourque was honored with the AHL Player of the Week, which was no surprise after scoring five goals in two games including the first four goal game in Texas Stars history. Which included the game tying goal and overtime winner to lead Texas past Grand Rapids. He leads the AHL in scoring this season in his 2nd year with the Stars and will be just a matter of time before he makes the jump to the NHL.

Coming out of the Christmas break for the National Hockey League, Joey begins today's episode of Locked On Stars discussing the unbelievable win the Dallas Stars had against the Nashville Predators on Saturday. The Stars made history by becoming the first team to score the tying goal and go ahead goal in the final 15 seconds of regulation. Craig Smith and Jani Hakanpaa were the two goal scores along with Evgenii Dadanov to erase a two goal deficit in the 3rd period. The two biggest takeaways for Joey over the last week is tightening up defensively and being able to win from behind. The Stars lead the NHL with 12 come from behind wins this season. We then segway into a conversation about the power play that is 0 for the last 14 opportunities. Dallas has been able to win without it by holding opponents off the scoresheet on the man advantage, but it could make life much easier if they get it rolling again. Joey offers some solutions and why he thinks the power play has slipped over the past week. The show wraps up by praising Scott Wedgewood who has put up a 9-1-2 record in 12 games this season and has been an anchor since Jake Oettinger went down with an injury. He allows the Stars to be in every game and has such a great compete level since switching his mindset to being a number one goalie instead of a backup. His presence has been superb this season and a big reason why the Stars are in first place in the Central Division and top 5 in the NHL.

Thomas Harley and Matt Duchene connect in overtime in back to back games to defeat the Vancouver Canucks 4-3 last night. Duchene now leads the NHL with six game winning goals and Harley is tied for goals by defensemen with nine after his tying goal late in the 3rd period. On today's episode of Locked On Stars, Joey begins the discussion about Thomas Harley becoming a young superstar right before our eyes. What he's doing in his first 28 games is remarkable in terms of goal scoring, he's tied with some of the best defensemen in the game and he's playing almost six minutes less and has a severe difference in power play time. Once again, Jim Nill has hit a home run with this pick and he has been everything the Stars have needed this season on the backend. The conversation then switched to Duchene who continues to prove he's the best value in the NHL. Joey compares other players with similar salary's to show the stark difference in play the Stars are getting with Duchene. He's been a saving grace recently for Dallas and you cannot overstate how huge of an impact he has had 30 games in. Joey then explains his main takeaways from the Vancouver game including battling back when getting punched first and being much more sound as a defensive unit in their own zone. Also, Scott Wedgewood is playing lights out and is holding the fort down since Jake Oettinger went on the IR. The show finishes off by highlighting the amount of depth and balanced attack the Stars have this season. Dallas now boasts six players with 10 goals or more, the first team in the NHL to do so this season. This is a stark difference in years past and that could be the key factor to getting them over the top.

The Dallas Stars and Pete DeBoer have been deploying a rotational fourth line as of late with Radek Faksa, Craig Smith, Sam Steel and Ty Dellandrea. In years past, the fourth line has been very consistent, but is it time that some guys must earn their way into the lineup. Joey believes it may be time to give the trio of Steel, Dellandrea and Smith some time to fester, it's been a small sample size, but that line ranks best in terms of goals percentage and goals against per 60. It's no secret that DeBoer wants more offense out of his depth and maybe he's found it. That conversation leads into a preview of the Vancouver Canucks. The first meeting was a 2-0 shutout in favor of the Canucks in a game that was dominated by Thatcher Demko. The Canucks lead the league in goals scored at 5 on 5 and have multiple players having phenomenal years. What is on your Dallas Stars Christmas List for this season? On today's episode of Locked On Stars, Joey gives his top 3 wishes on his list which include a right shot defensemen, returning to a shutdown defensive team in terms of goals against and for Wyatt Johnston to get out of his scoring slump. It's no surprise the Stars need another defensemen, but with only one righty playing on an everyday basis, another body could potentially have Miro Heiskanen or Thomas Harley play on their strong side that could do wonders in their own zone and possibly an uptick in offense. In past seasons, the Stars have ranked in the top 5 in goals against average, as of right now they are 14th.Wyatt Johnston has not scored a goal in 11 games, the Stars offense has not dipped because of it, but if he gets his scoring touch back it will could lift them too new heights. In the 2nd segment, Joey touches on the Stars defense providing offense in the month of December. He provides some support to why it's important that the group continues to produce in order for them to get where they want to be. Even Jani Hakanpaa and Esa Lindell are finding points along the way. Finally, how about that performance from Mavrik Bourque for the Texas Stars last night. Bourque scored all four goals in a 4-3 win for Texas including the OT winner. Of course, Logan Stankoven assisted on three of the goals as both are the top two scorers in the AHL.
