Locked On Stars - Daily Podcast On The Dallas Stars

The Dallas Stars need to fix their defense and they need to do it quickly. On today's episode of Locked On Stars, Joey wants the Stars to show some urgency in fixing the backend. With Nils Lundkvist being healthy scratched the last two games, will he prove he's good enough to play come playoff time? Miro Heiskanen is great, but has stumbled recently along with his partner Ryan Suter who had a strong start. At least Thomas Harley has stepped up into being a very valuable asset on defense as well as offense leading Stars D men with five goals this season. Joey believes Dallas needs to get help before the deadline in order to get the club where they need to be. Next up, the Stars play game two of three game road trip so Joey previews tonight's matchup with the Florida Panthers and highlights the amazing season Sam Reinhart is having along with Alexander Barkov. They will need to be stopped if the Stars are to have any success. The show ends with Joey's shooting star pick which is Matt Duchene, Duchene has not scored in eight straight games, but has been very involved and getting looks.

The Dallas Stars get shutout by Andrei Vasilevskiy and the Tampa Bay Lighting in what was a frustrating night from the Stars. It was a bad night defensively for Ryan Suter and Miro Heiskanen who were on the ice for multiple goals on the night. Even when the Stars had their chances, Vasilevskiy shut it down. On today's episode of Locked On Stars, Joey breaks down the loss and how it was a tough night for most of the Stars with bright spots from Thomas Harley, Tyler Seguin and Matt Duchene. Speaking of Tyler Seguin, The Athletic did a NHL awards prediction for the quarter mark of the season and Seguin comes in at number three for the Selke Trophy, the award given to the best defensive forward. With 17 points in 23 games and having the third highest defensive rating of all forwards this season, it's great for the Stars to have him in the conversation. The final segment, Joey gives his takeaway on the Dallas Stars a quarter of the way through the season and none more important than addressing the defense. On most nights, the defense is what holds the Stars back and they must fix it in order to be the team they want to be.

The Dallas Stars offense exploded for eight goals on Saturday afternoon in an 8-1 win over the Lightning. The Stars had eight players with multi point nights including Joe Pavelski, Thomas Harley, Mason, Marchment, Tyler Seguin and more! The PK continues to be great as they went 5/6 on the game and the new look power play units went 2/2 including a patented Pavelski deflection goal to extend his point streak to nine games. Esa Lindell and Jani Hakanpaa played big minutes on the penalty kill and have been huge factors to the success this season. However, the big storyline entering the game was Pete DeBoer healthy scratched Nils Lundkvist and Evgenni Dadanov. Joey shares his thoughts on why they might have done this and how it affects the Stars lineup. The show finishes with 3 keys to the game against Tampa Bay tonight as the Stars begin their three game road trip.

The Dallas Stars fall to the Calgary Flames by a final score of 4-3 in overtime last night. Mason Marchment scored twice including a penalty shot goal, Joe Pavelski extended his point streak to eight games, and Thomas Harley scored his fourth goal of the season but the Stars came up short. On today's episode of Locked On Stars, Joey expresses how the game really never felt in hand for the Stars even when they had the lead as they we're playing not to lose. The Flames exposed a lot of the Stars weaknesses in the season series and none more glaring than the defense. It did not help the cause with uncharacteristic plays from Miro Heiskanen, Nils Lundkvist and others, but thats what it is. Dallas was not able to create enough offense in the 2nd half of the game trying to hang on to a one goal lead while Calgary was throwing everything at Scott Wedgewood who played well. The bright spot of Mason Marchment having a bounce back season was the highlight for the Stars, it was his first multi goal night since opening night of last season in Nashville, and the first penalty shot goal for the Stars since 2019. If this is the version the Stars will get on most nights, they will be in good hands.

The big question of the day is do the Dallas Stars trust Nils Lundkvist? Coming off a win over Winnipeg, Lundkvist did not play in the final 15 minutes of the 3rd period which is a cause for concern considering some of the strides he's made this season. Of course Miro Heiskanen is going to chew up most minutes in tight games, but Pete DeBoar is going with Ryan Suter, Jani Hakanpaa and Esa Lindell in close games. Is the emergence of Thomas Harley also the problem? Stars 19 year old prospect in the AHL, Lian Bichsel, is headed back to Sweden. Joey shares Jim Nill's conversation with Saad Yousef from the Athletic and why this could be a good thing in the long run for Dallas. Also, an update on the Texas Stars who are leading the Central Division in the AHL. Finally, we spotlight Joe Pavelski who leads the Stars in scoring this season at 39 years old. The future hall of famer is much more than a presence on the ice, he's leadership will leave a mark on the Stars for years to come.

Jake Oettinger makes 27 saves and the Dallas Stars shutout the Winnipeg Jets as the Stars are now 8-1-1 on the road, which is the best 10 game start in franchise history. On today's episode of Locked On Stars, Joey breaks down what he thinks is the best defensive performance for the Stars this season. He discusses what helped shutdown the Jets offense and how they were able to keep them from sustaining zone time and creating chances. The Stars D core of Thomas Harley, Esa Lindell and Jani Hakanpaa had big nights for Dallas especially on the penalty kill. The PK was 4/4 on the night and had to kill two long stretches on 5 on 3 time which was very impressive, a combination of not allowing the Jets to get interior and great goaltending from Oettinger in his first shutout of the season. Joey praises the forwards groups of well and individuals such as Joe Pavelski who scored his 10th goal of the season and extended his point streak to seven games. Tyler Seguin scored his 7th off a great pass from Mason Marchment. Roope Hintz, Jason Robertson and Matt Duchene all picked up assists on the two goals. The Stars needed to tighten up defensivly after allowing over five goals per game during their home stand and this is a great step in the right direction. The Stars take on the Calgary Flames tomorrow night.

The Dallas Stars finished a five game home stand on Friday blowing another multiple goal lead to finish 2-2-1 during the stretch. On today's episode of Locked On Stars, Joey gives his biggest takeaways from the last week and a half and why although the Stars inconsistency in play is concerning he is not worried. Through 19 games this season, the Stars are in a very similar position to last year, the good thing is the offense and play has been contributing to large leads and sustained time of great play. Joey believes the attention to detail especially in the defensive zone will help close games out as the season goes along. The good news is Dallas will play on two road games this week where the Stars are 7-1-1 on the road this season. A combination of great goaltending, timely scoring on special teams and limiting chances from the opposition have made the Stars really stingy away from the AAC. In the final segment, Joey believes that Jake Oettinger and the team in front of them can fix a lot of their issues, it is much simpler than it might appear. Back checking hard, stopping in front of your own net, winning races to loose pucks and tying up your man will lead to better play. What do you think the Stars need to do better this week?

The Dallas Stars come from two goals down to defeat the New York Rangers 6-3 last night. Roope Hintz has a big three point night followed by Mason Marchment and Joe Pavelski who had multi point nights as well. After surrendering the first two goals, Scott Wedgwood shut down the Rangers as he mad 30 saves in the win and the Stars offense found its rhythm against a stingy defense and goalie in Igor Shesterkin. After losing on Saturday in a disappointing way, it was good to see Dallas step up against one of the best teams in the Eastern Conference. We found out during warm ups, the lines had been changed. Jason Robertson and Jamie Benn flipped flopped and both added a different dynamic to their new trios. Do you think the lines should stay that way or go back to the original trios we've seen for the majority of the season? Joey gives his thoughts and explanation on why they might be here to stay in the near future. Then it was announced during the 2nd period of the game, Mike Modano will finnaly have a statue in front of the American Airlines Center on March 16th. Dallas Mavericks legend Dirk Nowitzki of course had his statue revealed not too long ago and he will have the company of a 1999 Stanley Cup Champion.
