Introducing AWFUL: College Football Playoff Rankings FORGET BYU, Colorado, Push Big 12 Behind Bad Big 10, SEC from Locked On Big 12 | Daily College Football & Basketball Podcast.

Follow the show: Locked On Big 12 | Daily College Football & Basketball Podcast

The College Football Playoff (CFP) committee has sometimes been criticized for overlooking BYU, despite the program’s impressive performances and strong football tradition. For fans of the Cougars, the perception of being snubbed stems from a belief that the committee does not always fairly evaluate teams outside of the Power Five conferences, which historically has included BYU. This has resulted in frustration as BYU has often been left out of key national conversations and prestigious bowl game opportunities, even when its record and performance on the field suggest otherwise.

One of the main challenges BYU has faced in the CFP era is its status as an independent program until joining the Big 12. Without the backing of a conference championship or the guaranteed spotlight that comes with Power Five affiliation, BYU has had to work harder to prove its worth. In years when BYU fielded strong teams—such as the 2020 season, where the Cougars finished 11-1 and showcased a dominant offense led by quarterback Zach Wilson—there was a belief that the committee undervalued their success, citing weaker schedules or lack of high-profile wins as reasons to rank them lower.

The lack of consistent recognition by the CFP committee often frustrates BYU fans, who point to the program’s history of winning tough matchups and producing top-tier talent capable of competing at the highest level. They argue that BYU’s commitment to scheduling strong opponents and performing well in national matchups should warrant more serious consideration. The 2020 snub, in particular, highlighted this sentiment, where BYU, despite its high national rankings in polls, fell short of a significant postseason opportunity in favor of Power Five teams with comparable or weaker resumes.

As BYU transitions into the Big 12, there is hope that being part of a Power Five conference will lead to more respect from the CFP committee and better opportunities to showcase their abilities on a national stage. Until then, the conversation about the perceived snubbing remains a point of contention for the program and its devoted supporters.

Introducing Utah Eyeing Big 12 Exit After BYU Loss? How Mark Harlan's Comments Express Utes Distrust of League from Locked On Big 12 | Daily College Football & Basketball Podcast.

Follow the show: Locked On Big 12 | Daily College Football & Basketball Podcast

Utah is undoubtedly a valuable addition to the new Big 12, bringing a mix of competitive strength, passionate fanbase, and historical success that enhances the conference's profile. As a program that has consistently proven its mettle on the field, Utah's inclusion bolsters the overall quality of the Big 12, ensuring it remains a conference capable of competing on the national stage.

One of the primary reasons Utah is a valuable member is its recent history of success. Under head coach Kyle Whittingham, the Utes have become a perennial contender in the Pac-12, regularly finishing at the top of the conference standings and making significant bowl game appearances, including back-to-back Pac-12 Championships in 2021 and 2022. Their track record of producing strong teams, highlighted by disciplined defense and physical play, aligns with the competitive ethos of the Big 12. This level of success means that Utah’s presence immediately raises the competitive bar for the entire conference.

Utah also adds significant value through its devoted fanbase and rich gameday atmosphere. Rice-Eccles Stadium in Salt Lake City is known for its intensity and sold-out crowds that create a formidable home-field advantage. This type of support enhances the overall fan experience in the Big 12 and reinforces the conference's image as one of the most passionate in college football.

Additionally, Utah's rivalry with BYU, known as the “Holy War,” brings a historic and emotionally charged matchup that will captivate audiences and contribute to the conference's unique identity. This rivalry is a ready-made showcase event that can generate significant media attention and draw viewers, boosting the Big 12’s visibility.

In essence, Utah’s combination of competitive excellence, loyal following, and strong market presence makes it an invaluable member of the new Big 12. Their participation not only strengthens the conference athletically but also enriches its cultural and regional diversity.

Introducing SEC, Big 10 Trying to Ruin Big 12 via Super Conference AGAIN: Ignoring All Expansion Phone Calls from Locked On Big 12 | Daily College Football & Basketball Podcast.

Follow the show: Locked On Big 12 | Daily College Football & Basketball Podcast

The SEC and Big Ten have long established themselves as the two most dominant and powerful conferences in college football, often leaving the Big 12 in a secondary tier when it comes to national recognition and influence. This separation is rooted in several factors, including financial resources, historic programs, and media visibility, all of which have contributed to the SEC and Big Ten’s superior position in college athletics.

One of the most significant reasons for the gap between these conferences and the Big 12 is their lucrative media rights deals. The SEC and Big Ten have secured massive television contracts that bring in billions of dollars, allowing their member schools to invest heavily in state-of-the-art facilities, top-tier coaching staff, and recruiting efforts. This financial advantage fuels their dominance and makes them more attractive to top talent, both on the field and in coaching positions. The Big 12, while still profitable, does not command the same level of media income, limiting its ability to compete at the same financial level as the SEC and Big Ten.

Additionally, the SEC and Big Ten are home to historic powerhouses with legacies of national championships and Heisman Trophy winners. Programs like Alabama, Georgia, Ohio State, and Michigan have consistently been among the top-ranked teams, drawing the attention of recruits, media, and fans. This sustained success creates a cycle of prominence that feeds their status as the most powerful conferences. In comparison, while the Big 12 has had its share of highly competitive programs—such as Oklahoma, which consistently contended for national titles before its move to the SEC—it lacks the same concentration of elite programs year after year.

The reach and influence of the SEC and Big Ten also extend to the College Football Playoff (CFP) system, where their teams have often been given more favorable consideration due to the perceived strength of their schedules and the depth of their conferences. This has led to the narrative that the SEC and Big Ten are simply “tougher” conferences to navigate, which influences rankings and playoff selections. The Big 12, meanwhile, often finds itself having to go above and beyond to make a similar impression on the CFP committee.

Introducing Best Bets: BYU Sneaks Past Utah, Iowa State Rolls, UCF Cooked, TCU Struggles, West Virginia Fired! from Locked On Big 12 | Daily College Football & Basketball Podcast.

Follow the show: Locked On Big 12 | Daily College Football & Basketball Podcast

Every season, the Big 12 delivers compelling storylines as underdog teams consistently challenge traditional powerhouses. Programs like Kansas State, Baylor, Oklahoma State, and TCU have all had their moments in the spotlight, proving they can rise to the occasion and upset the balance of power. The 2022 season was a perfect example, with TCU making an unexpected run to the College Football Playoff championship game after an undefeated regular season, showcasing the potential for any team in the conference to break through to the national stage.

The high level of competition in the Big 12 is further amplified by the conference’s offensive and defensive diversity. Teams like Oklahoma State and Texas Tech have historically been known for high-flying, prolific offenses, while teams like Iowa State and Kansas State have built reputations on physical, disciplined play and stout defense. This range of styles means that teams have to be adaptable and well-rounded to survive the gauntlet of the Big 12 schedule.

Adding to the competitiveness, the recent expansion of the Big 12 with programs like BYU, Cincinnati, Houston, and UCF brings fresh challenges and new rivalries that only strengthen the conference’s standing. These additions infuse the Big 12 with new talent and create a conference landscape that is more unpredictable than ever. The fierce competition extends beyond the field to recruiting battles and the race to develop talent that can compete nationally.

The Big 12’s competitive nature ensures that every game is significant, and every team must fight for every win. This intensity makes for a season that keeps fans engaged and produces highlight-reel moments and close finishes that are rarely seen elsewhere. In the Big 12, success isn’t just about having one or two great seasons; it’s about consistently surviving and thriving in a conference where even the smallest misstep can derail championship hopes. This relentless competitiveness has become the hallmark of Big 12 football, solidifying its reputation as one of the most dynamic and exciting conferences in the sport.
