  • Chief Rod Googoo on the Moose Hunt
    Today, the Assembly of Nova Scotia Mi'kmaq Chiefs extended a state of emergency until Tuesday, September 29th. This follows incidents surrounding the Mi'kmaq lobster fishery near Digby. In the meantime, the lead of the Land, Wildlife and Forestry Department chief Rod Googoo issued a release about the moose hunt. Chief Googoo joined Mainstreet to tell us about that.

    We look at District 4 in the CBRM. A little less than 10 thousand people live in the area. It covers roughly 54 square kilometers. This is a largely residential district, single family dwellings, although there is industrial and commercial development in the area. It includes the: communities of Edwardsville and Westmount, part of the community of Coxheath, the community of Sydney River, and Prime Brook north of Highway 125. There are three candidates in this district and the candidates are Yianni Harbis, Donelda Johnson, and incumbent Steve Gillespie.

    For our very first candidates debate - we're going to hear from the candidates in district 2 of the CBRM.
    That's the district that takes in North Sydney, Little Bras d'Or, Point Aconi, Millville and Southside Boularderie.
    There are two people running - the incumbent, Earlene MacMullin, and Jim Dunphy.

    Biologist Jessica MacSween is leading a kick-netting event for youth. Kick-netting is a technique used to sample macroinvertebrates in waterways. This technique helps us better understand the health of a stream.

  • The Highland Village Museum to undergo expansion and renovations
    A new 7,700 square foot welcome/cultural centre will be built and will be opened year round. It will include such things as an orientation exhibit, archive, and gift shop. A new 500 square foot shingle mill will also be built and be fully operational.
    There will also be multiple renovations to other structures around the museum such as their current visitor centre. That will be used to preserve the Gaelic Nova Scotia provincial collection.

    The filmmaker behind the documentary about the Gabarus seawall, Only 78, has a new film showing as part of the Halifax Film Festival. Citizen of Moria, by Jawad Mir and Ahmad Ebrahimi , tells the story of Ahmad's experience in Europe's worst Refugee Detention Camp, Moria, and his hopes of finding asylum in Europe or Canada.
