    Dave Johnson is the founder of MindSentinel, a Nova Scotia-based startup that is currently developing a “check engine light” mental health app. The app focuses on depression and is prevention-oriented. They are now at the stage in our development where they want to learn about the people in the target audience: individuals who have experienced at least one major depressive episode. David has personally dealt with depression over the past 20 years, with the idea for the app arising out of his own experience.

  • Ingonish Dog Incident
    When Arlene Fougere from the Northern tip of Cape Breton took her dog to the Ingonish temporary Vet clinic for a sore paw last week, she had no idea her visit would end in catastrophe. Due to what she thinks was a series of missed steps, her otherwise healthy husky, Cooper was somehow euthanized before her very eyes. She is distraught, but found time to speak with us earlier today. Joining us on the call is her lawyer Jeff Mitchell. A word of caution, what you are about to hear could be disturbing for some listeners.

  • North Sydney Food Bank Will Soon be on the Move
    Plans are moving along for a big move for the North Sydney food bank. It opened at the former train station 26 years ago. The move would send them across town to the former Seaton school. CBRM Council has approved the idea once several conditions are met. The Food bank would go in one section of the school while the other part of the complex would be used for housing. Lawrence Shebib is Executive Director of the North Sydney Food Bank. He met with George Mortimer at the school to get an update for Mainstreet.

    The Pan Cape Breton Food Hub has purchased a building which will be the site of its processing facility. The building, located in Bras d’Or, was formally the Celtic County Market. “This facility will be a game-changer in our whole industry - Farmers and food businesses will be able to expand, and more people will get to eat Cape Breton grown food year-round,” says Alicia Lake, Executive Director of the Food Hub.

    Aselin Ettinger, a Cape Bretoner living in Digby that teaches at Digby Elementary School. She designed her gym class to be inclusive to kids with intellectual disabilities like being on the Autism Spectrum Disorder. Someone nominated Ettinger for the 2020 Rick Hansen Educator Difference Maker of the Year for the work she does in her gym class.
